Description:
This is a WIP Another song sketch.......I've had this idea for a really long time and just recently figured a way to start writing it. Just keyboard and vocal basically and only half a song but it helps me a lot to look at what I'm writing......I already see several changes songwise. Thought I'd go ahead and put up what I have for now. A love song.

Lyrics:
Darlin I never knew time could move so fast
another wrinkle or two under my eyes
and all those dreams that I had never came to pass
but you're still standing here by my side

oh when times were so bad
and love was all we had
you always found a reason to smile
I guess I'm just like all the rest
just average at best, God knows I'm blessed
to have you in my life

It may not be the greatest love story that's ever been told
but way down deep inside my soul I know
you're the only one with what it takes
the only one who could ever make this heart of mine stand still
you always did
you always have
you always will

Oh, this is a love song, alright &mdash 02/26/08 - 03:01:35 AM
I am astounded by your song writing and your amazing vocal ability. I love the sentiment of this song - simple, full of love. As a man, you may be just like all the rest, but as a musician, as a song writer, as a singer, you are not close to "average at best".

So, give us another verse, a bridge, and bring it on home. This is absolutely worth finishing. Really, really nice.

Hey It's your fault &mdash 02/26/08 - 04:59:32 PM
I started this song. You mentioned the other night in chat about finishing songs for your family..... afterwards it made me start thinking and this is the result. Ha! It takes so long for me to get started on some ideas and usually it's because I try to be too clever or poetic with the lyrics. You would think after all these years I would know, that in a serious love song all you really have to do is talk.....just say what's in your heart and be honest. Patrick I want to thank you for all of your generous comments and encouragement, also for making me feel welcome here. I'm glad you like this.
Now I've started mine and put it up. Where's yours!

thanks Patrick

Oh Rats! &mdash 02/26/08 - 06:05:28 AM
That was my first thought... when I realized you had a new song posted. I knew I had to listen to it and risk being late for work.

I second Patrick's comment- just give us some more (and maybe some harmonies- I'm a sucker for that).

Hope you weren't late! &mdash 02/26/08 - 05:19:07 PM
Adam as you know I'm a sucker for harmonies myself. I just knew this vocal was a scratch and didn't wanna build around it. I am also not sure how to approach the bg's on this, meaning.......to parallel the lead or do a chord block(it has a challenging change towards the end of the chorus.) Happy you liked the song.

thanks Adam for listening

Once again I have to thank you for your kind comments and helping my music to be heard here at MJ's. You know, singing to me, has always been just a way to get my ideas down the way I hear them. It seems for the last few years that real singing has not been very popular.....which baffles me. Anyhow, I don't know what will happen with the stuff I'm writing now, I'm just happy to be writing a little again and enjoying it. I think it's inspirational to find this, place where I can throw up an unfinished idea like this one, and get feedback from good ears and great talent such as yourself.
Hey was watching the news, I hope you're not in the dark.

Thanks Mcboy

Maybe this is much, but it reminds of Billy Joel. That's a very high compliment I must say.

Great stuff!

REally something to hear a droop tune :) &mdash 02/28/08 - 12:15:16 AM
One of the greatest singing, composing talents here droop. Think it is pretty evident on the first tune I heard you do here.

Great pop style. Really impressed droop!

Way to go.

Thanks for being such a great part of MJ!

here is a showcase textbook example of how to write conversation lyrics that draw the listener in with shared experiences at an emotional level... a simple offering that has a real strength in vocal performance & sincerity...

alway did ... always have... always will... simple & powerful

A Gem In Waiting &mdash 02/29/08 - 05:19:08 PM
This song clearly has unlimited production possibilities.

It's already appealing in this minimalist form, but with some imaginative arrangement and production, it could easily compare to some of Top Ten in Contemporary Country.

You have a great voice and style for this genre of music. ;)

Revisiting and re-commenting... &mdash 02/29/08 - 10:51:01 PM
You know, Paul... I really, really love the sentiment and the positivity of your music. Man, what are we doing wrong these days that we can't hear more simple love songs on the radio. Oh well....

That said, I really wanted this to be longer, if nothing else. And while we both are admitted suckers to harmony I don't think this song needs them- it's you singing the song. Period. So yes, I've kind of changed my mind a little.

To illustrate: One of the first concerts I went to was in 1981- Blue Oyster Cult and Foghat. I heard a lot of great music that night but what made the show for me... and all these years later is still the only thing that stands out of all the shows I ever saw was Lonesome Dave coming out and playing "Third Time Lucky" solo, playing the electric piano (Rhodes, Hammond, Fisher-Price, whatever). He played it purely as a love song and it was fantastic and seemed very heartfelt at the time.

Oh yeah- I still have no idea what the heck a bg is!

Great voice and lyrics &mdash 03/01/08 - 07:58:09 AM
it's nice hearing this in this stripped down version - good start.

a good start &mdash 03/01/08 - 09:31:48 AM
lyrics are lovely. vocal delivery is good. i did pop my head up when I heard you sing "the only one who could ever make" - just sounds cramped compared to the way you sing everything else.
If I were producing this tune I'd switch that electric piano sound out for a grand piano. I'd also wait till the chorus to bring in the shaker. But you got a good start to a good diet rock song.

another great song &mdash 03/19/08 - 06:36:36 PM
Thanks again - Just going through your catalog and I could listen to your stuff all night. Your sound is right on, and I really like your changes. I'm not sure if you intended this, but your stuff reminds me of my youth; Toto, (your voice sounds a lot like Lukather's to me) Tubes, Alan Parsons, and others. It just sends me back to younger days.

I also like that you don't feel the need to bury your voice in verb and processing. You have a great ear and great production values. Very nice indeed.
