Description:
I recorded a version of this on iComp about four years ago. It got lots of plays and downloads. The more I listen to it, however, the more little flaws I hear, which I have always wanted to correct. But maybe the earlier flaws made it popular, I don't know. Anyway, I like this version better.
Piano plug-in is Akoustik Piano thru GB3, Yamaha P-120 controller, 2004 eMac 1.25 ghz, 1gb Ram.

...Beethoven is "rolling over" in his grave, John. You once again work your wonderful magic with the jazz piano and chording. I never thought I would enjoy Fur Elise again, but you brought new life to it in your inimitable way. Just supurb. (The Akoustik really works well on this number. Very crisp. You seem to be enjoying yourself immensely.)

Very nice, very tasteful, as always. I am pretty sure that Ludwig likes it -- yup, just double-checked; he does!
I was wondering if you might cut loose, stretch out a bit, as you kept it going, but it doesn't do that so much, which of course is perfectly good too! But, just for the record, I'd love to hear a version of this in which something along these lines happened (i.e., start very controlled, 'inside the box,' then progressively stretch out until it gradually becomes more 'raw', or whatever the term might be for when an artist cuts loose).
But be that is it may, this is wonderfully done, and I love it! [ Reply to This ]

...this is downright excellent...very, very tasteful...the blend of jazz and classical is just right. And I like the length of the piece, too. Seems true to the original in that way...

I really like the alt voicings. Very nice.
I see that you are using Akoustik Piano on the last couple of tracks - did this replace Ivory? I got Akoustik a while back and I have never warmed up to it - it always seems a little too bright and tinny for me. I have started using it again and have found a preset that I like, but overall, I was disappointed with it. How are you finding it?

Thanks, Kyle. Yes, I am using Akoustik regularly now, and have not used Ivory in about a year. I saw a review of it in Mix Magazine, and they really liked the Steinway setting, but the other settings were not so good, they said. And they were right, I think. The Steingraber, the Bosendorfer, are not that great. Not even just for variety. But I really do like the Steinway, and I like the fact that the reverb is built-in to the program (unlike Ivory), and that Akoustik has its own built-in equalizer. And Akoustik puts far less of a strain on my computer than Ivory -- Ivory always had stutters and dropouts -- it was rare that I could listen to a playback without some kind of performance issue. But with Akoustic -- that rarely happens. I think Akoustik is a combination of physical modeling and old-fashioned sampling, which may explain why it's less taxing on my computer. The whole thing installs on only 4 DVDs, as opposed to ten for Ivory. I have been very happy with it. I recorded most of my latest CD with Akoustik.

One more thing -- Akoustik does not work right now with Leopard. I upgraded to Leopard on my desktop Mac before I checked whether or not it would work (why would it not work?). So my Macbook is still running Tiger, so for the moment, if I want to use Akoustik, I have to use the Macbook. The people at Native Instruments tell me that a fix is in the works, but no date yet. Wow this is sweet. Nice playing and great chord choice for the jazz version. Love the twist on an old classic that keeps me interested in a piece that (at music stores) is way too overplayed. If they played something like this I'd right behind them just soaking it up. I almost feel like it'd sound sweet with some sort of jazz beat behind. *shrug* just me rambling. I used to play as a child. This one is better; just wonderful! I really wished I had taken some Jazz as a kid. Your interpretation would have given Beethoven a pause for taught, and who knows, he probably would have also been the greatest Jazz composer ever (in addition to Bach of course):> [ Reply to This ]
