Description:
After seemingly unanimous consent that my last song would have benefited from a back ground rhythm track I finally broke out an old midi keyboard I've had gathering dust since I got it.

I don't really know what I'm doing with it, I just explored some sounds until I came up with what you see before you. I started off with the bass line, added the percussion, than jazz organ than finally tried to fit a guitar or two over top.

One of these days I'll experiment with looping the more finely tuned portions but for now, I just played each track in their entirety and left them the flawed and pretty things they are.

As always, your feedback on my experiments are most welcome.

I like it and I have your adder post in GB I try to put some drums, bass..etc in to it... But right now all my inspiration to do music is gone... I have to much family stuff to do right now... But I come to finished that song when I get more time/inspiration to do it... Cheers

Take care

Hi Pete... &mdash 02/28/08 - 06:36:43 AM
This is simple and it's rough, but it's the kind of simple and rough that I enjoy... In fact, I'm starting it up for another listen...

I like the rhythm of the thing, carried by all different elements... handclaps in the left channel, snare over in the right with the rhythm guitar... and I really like that bass line...

Most of all I like your phrasing on the electric guitar on this...

Some like it rough! &mdash 02/28/08 - 07:51:07 AM
Thanks Ed, there is no doubt it was a rough effort. If I wanted to fine tune this it would have taken me more time than I had and as you may be aware by now, I rarely put more than a single session's effort into a song. It was an awakening experience though, as I had great fun playing around with the keyboard.

As for the guitar phrasing, well, that is the one instrument in my studio I actually feel comfortable with.

Glad you liked it. I always appreciate your feedback on my music.

Sounds great &mdash 02/28/08 - 06:56:38 AM
Well, I don't really hear any rough edges... it sounds good to me. You refer to the tracks as 'flawed and pretty,' which is a great way to describe things... maybe I wish more music were flawed but pretty!

The only suggestions I have are (a) it's pretty short; seems to wrap up before it's had a chance to get very far, and (b) it might be nice to gradually develop more energy as you build towards a peak, maybe have it not be quite so controlled at times? If that makes any sense... !

All the pretty things &mdash 02/28/08 - 08:26:54 AM
Thanks for dropping in for a listen Clark. I'm glad you enjoyed my modest efforts and appreciate your feedback. I will admit that this is a short little ditty, but I guess my focus was to lay down a solid background track, something I have been negligent of in the past. This was sort of an experiment, with the focus being on the sounds themselves as opposed to the music. Of course, I wanted it to be musical, but it's basically populated with "throw-away" melodies that served there purpose here for this project. (That sounded harsh! Don't get me wrong, I love all my children!)

I will take your advice on build-up reaching a peak. That sounds like a fun exercise in it's own right!

Makes me sick! &mdash 02/28/08 - 08:40:43 AM
I mean... that you could simply fool around and come up with something so fun and nice! I really like it!

I remember playing in a high school back (way before Macs) and I started tweaking on a guitar riff at practice and suddenly the drummer hit in, then the bassist and we just took it and made something of it. It became one of our regular songs. We recorded it on analog tape but it's long gone.

Sometimes letting the mind wonder with the sound is the best way to go.

Sound wanderings &mdash 02/28/08 - 10:14:13 AM
Sometimes you just get lucky when you forget everything and just go with sounds pleasant to the ear. Fighting the tendency to put technical profiency ahead of musical simplicity often yields great rewards!

Thanks for dropping by! Maybe that tape will show up when you least expect it.

For just fooling around, bravo. Interesting beat and the panning of each instrument is nice, lets me grove with the sweet guitar. Thanks for posting, can't wait for the next versions. PS- I want a kick in there :)

Thanks &mdash 03/02/08 - 11:00:21 AM
Glad you liked the mix. I am pretty happy with the blend.

Check out my Groovthy tune for plenty of kick. Probably went overboard on it but it's where the music told me to go!

nice sound &mdash 03/06/08 - 02:07:53 PM
This sort of combination has got lots of potential - sounds very jazzy in a Weather Report kind of way. I think you could create some nice bassline structures which sound clear and precise then really mess it up with some dirty guitar over the top. The drum needs bringing up in the mix I think, to drive it along, but a very promising start to your one man band!!!

Tighter Bass &mdash 03/07/08 - 11:54:44 AM
Thanks for dropping in Smokey, it's always good to hear your take on things. I agree with the tighter bass, and I blame it on velocity control on the keyboard. For whatever reason, when I hit the keyboard too hard, the bass note when start a half note lower and simulate a slide up to the proper note. It was a neat effect to an extent but when you don't know if it is going to do it or not, it's hard to properly time the strike. As you can probably guess by now, I like playing around the beat for whatever groove I'm going for and having this "fake-slide" trick only kicking off occasionally seems to give the track a looser feel.

Oh well, it is what it is, but I'll keep an ear out for a nice tight bass sound for a future tune.

Thanks again!
