Description:
Illinoi is a song composed and performed by a bunch of us in high school, LONG before MIDI, software and anything but analog tape. We managed this effort with a simple 4 track tape recorder, a mixer and a lot of blood sweat and tears. I post it just so I can remember my roots and how we used to make music.

Hardware:
4 track analog tape, 8 channel mixer, mics, electric guitars, drums, a moog synth and us

Treasures from the Past &mdash 02/28/08 - 07:06:03 PM
Thanks for sharing this with us. It must be nice to have gem like this from your past to capture where you were at that time.

I haven't heard too many high school bands that could pull something like this off.

Oh yeah, that lead belongs on a classic rock album!

Thanks! &mdash 02/29/08 - 07:55:15 AM
Thanks Pete! We were all kind of electronically inclined in late HS and when I picked up the 4 track reel to reel we started to play with it and this was the result. As you can hear, lots of hum, punch ins, there are at least 3 generations of tape to tape for this hence the noise.

I think this song took us almost a month to record, re-take, and fix problems. Wade was and still is an amazing lead guitarist. In this piece I'm playing the synth and keyboard (Rhodes) back up. Wade came up with the double tracking idea so we used all four tracks to get the basic mix then we sent it to a cassette recorder, then back to two tracks of the four track, Wade's lead was double tracked on the remaining two tracks, then it went back for final mix to the cassette (hence the three generations of tape).

Thanks again for listening!

Cool - and I take it personally &mdash 03/27/08 - 11:45:13 PM
This bursting with analogy - er, make that analog-ish - goodness.

This song dredges up all the mixed feelings of my own move last year from downtown Chicago, with its millions of people, to an East Tennessee chain-store suburb no big city in sight.. lots of adjusting to do (if I don't move back)!

I kinda miss &mdash 04/01/08 - 11:00:31 AM
those 4 track days! Real cool recording. The bass and guitar riff lines are real cool. Has a YES or Moody Blues feel to me. Come back to Illinois we miss you here!
