Description:
a song written as a tribute to Jimmy Yancey the great blues pianist born 1898, died 1951. He lived on the corner of 35th and Dearborn in Chicago. He was also known as quiet papa. Jimmy had been dead for fourteen years before I discovered his recordings.

Lyrics:
35th. and Dearborn. written 2005

1. 35th. and Dearborn on a cold Chicago night and close to ten ,

At Jimmy's place the lights are down and Mama draws the curtains once again .

But Jimmy won't be home again he's lost and far away.

2. Gone is his piano , and the silence we now hear perfumes the air ,

The golden notes he gave to us have been preserved in shellac everywhere ,

Slow and sure they softly fall like honey from the bee ,

Now every night I'm crying in my sleep .

8 bars piano break.

3. Music in the Spanish style and everlasting blues straight from the heart ,

Simple flowing patterns with those bass lines and their push notes from the start

Silenced in the course of time and left to fade away .

Now every night I'm crying in my sleep .

Every night I'm crying

Every night I'm crying , every night I'm crying in my sleep .

Great solo. Your piano playing is always on target. Gently, rolling ballad that's sweet and memorable. Overall, a worthy tribute.

Thanks for posting.

Great song &mdash 02/29/08 - 01:22:47 PM
John and your piano and vocals are top notch. I would personally have preferred a cleaner recording though.
Cheers

thank you Len, &mdash 02/29/08 - 02:48:38 PM
sorry about the quality but you know me. This was done in 2005 when I was finding out how cubase sx worked. Most of the recordings I put on here are a few years old,- sometimes I get it right and sometimes I don't. A big problem I have is that my hearing is not wonderful which is probably the result of years playing in loud bands. It's the actual songs that interest me the most.

You are &mdash 02/29/08 - 05:03:14 PM
right, of course, John - the song is the most important thing - and this one is great.
Cheers

Musicianship and song writing is some of the best I've heard on these sites. I'll have to agree with Len a little bit. Of course it's up to you as an artist to decide whats important to you. But I do think your music would be a little more accessible, with a little better sound quality. I see Mona Lisa in a cloud of dust.
Regards btw Love the tune

I'm glad &mdash 03/01/08 - 03:56:44 AM
you like the song. At some point I do intend to re record some of the songs I consider to be my better ones. You are right in what you say, I realised that this one wasn't good when I recorded it which but just couldn't seem to clean it up. - Maybe a B side ay? Thank you for your constructive comments, they will always be welcome.

John.

I know its silly &mdash 03/01/08 - 12:51:39 PM
For someone like me, with my comparable lack of skill to offer any criticism of you. And I wouldn't have bothered if your stuff wasn't so great. I know re-recording can be less than inspired and with out inspiration what is the point. May be something could be improved through eq or mastering or go the other direction and add some megaphone and crackle effects, just a thought. I hope none of us nit pickers dissuade you from posting up all your old hits. Regards

What a great tribute &mdash 03/04/08 - 08:40:32 AM
Jimmy Yancey!

I think this is really one of the great things about music. Finding great musicians that time has practically erased and then someone puts em up were they should be!

Way to go! A great way to shows these talents that deserve so much more than what they have been given it seems.
Just can't say enough about this type of thing!

But it is GREAT that you have such depth to give recognition!

you know &mdash 03/04/08 - 04:57:45 PM
I really felt for Jimmy as a man as well, it seems he and Mama Yancey who lived in this little cold water flat, had to struggle to pay their fuel bills. Jools Holland recently put a headstone on his previously unmarked grave. The world is full of injustices.

Thank you Bill for listening and for your kind comments, it means such a lot.

John. ps. how's Liz?
