Description:
I have been listening to a bunch of Wire and Gary Numan & the Tubeway Army lately, so I guess you can say that I was inspired to knock this one out before I go to work today. Lots of fuzz and synths in this one, the key was kind of weird for my voice, but life goes on (maybe I should find some keys that are good for me, I really never think about it
Lyrics:
I took the pieces back
and then the scandal went away
i think it's weird she showed up last night
maybe your lonely mood
was rubbing off on me
i'm craving something now but it's no good for me
(chorus)
i'm feeling like i ought to phone you
i'm feeling like i did before
now everything is better
i don't need that life anymore
i think it's time for me
to start looking for a wife
i think it's time for me
to start something brand new
i can't get all caught up
in all your doing now
i don't care about your family anyhow
(chorus)
i'm feeling like i ought to phone you
i'm feeling like i did before
now everything is bitter
i don't need that life anymore
Hardware:
intel mini mac, m-audio 49e keyboard, MXL USB mic, ibanez bass, ibanez artcore hollow body guitar, line 6 toneport
Software:
GB4, Free Ambient reverb, line 6 gearbox (i used the american punk setting for the gtr and the flip top setting for the bass).

really &mdash 02/28/08 - 05:14:58 PM
another great work you did - bring up the vox a slight tad, I think, but maybe you wanted it that way LOL
Nice, nice song

thanks Rocha &mdash 02/28/08 - 05:21:54 PM
glad you can hang with all of that fuzz. I wanted the vox a bit on the quiet side, partly for the mood and partly because i'm not really crazy about them. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
I LIKE it! &mdash 02/28/08 - 05:15:53 PM
Just simply a great song! And you knocked it out before work? Very impressive. Was this on the clavinova you found on the side of the road?? (LOL LOL) [ Reply to This ]
thanks Karen &mdash 02/28/08 - 05:25:24 PM
i knocked out the music and vox, i wrote the lyrics awhile ago (i've been digging through old notebooks lately). thanks a bunch for listening. sadly the clavinova is no more ( i gave it to my friend whose wife wanted to learn how to play piano). [ Reply to This ]
dig it &mdash 02/28/08 - 05:20:43 PM
It sounds almost like electro punk. Nice ruff production, voice is placed just right, in the middle of all that sweet terror. Ciao!

with ya. Super solid fuzz, synth type vibe hap'n. love it. Had that manic Dave Grolsch energy. I'm still trying to wrap my arms around all the cool places your music takes me. [ Reply to This ]
thanks KTB &mdash 02/28/08 - 07:11:40 PM
this was fun. I've been trying to get more interesting drum parts lately, after a long run of turning on a Casio drumbeat and just leaving it on until the end of the song. Thanks so much for stopping by. [ Reply to This ]
Cool Track &mdash 02/28/08 - 08:12:20 PM
70s rock for sure, guitars and keys go well together, vocals are excellent as well, cheers [ Reply to This ]
thanks TW &mdash 02/29/08 - 09:56:15 AM
glad you liked. it was an effort for me not to crank the guitar up more. I just love to wrap myself up in a soft velvety blanket of fuzz. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
Numan &mdash 02/28/08 - 09:38:05 PM
Yeah I thought of him as soon as it started playing before I read that. Very very cool. Excellent work with the synths. [ Reply to This ]
thanks &mdash 02/29/08 - 10:02:06 AM
for listening, so glad you dug it. i had my fun while i was making it. it's so easy to get a big sound with synths, sometimes it seems criminal. [ Reply to This ]
Say a Prayer &mdash 02/28/08 - 11:00:05 PM
I like the beat and the fat synths :-) very enjoyable heavy rock, excellent performance! [ Reply to This ]
another great track &mdash 02/29/08 - 12:01:31 AM
this one made me go dig up my old Cars CDs. Great synth work. You have a real knack for building a wall of sound that's not too over the top. I'd love to do a collab with you someday. [ Reply to This ]
hey man &mdash 02/29/08 - 09:59:50 AM
thanks a bunch. the part i usually have problems with is getting vox to sit in the mix right. any tips? i just discovered your stuff, and it all sounds so great. i'd love to do a collab sometime. [ Reply to This ]
cool &mdash 02/29/08 - 03:58:24 PM
thanks! regarding vocals, for me it's all about having a good mic and getting right up close to it. as far as mixing I have a bad habit of dropping my vocals too low, so I have to always remind myself to not be afraid to turn em up. that's where having a decent mic comes in though because it enables you to have a smooth and consistent vocal recording rather than one with a lot of volume fluxion. anyway I'm sure somebody else can give you rad mixing tips but this is what works best for me tracking wise.
Let's do that collab! [ Reply to This ]
Cars .. &mdash 02/29/08 - 12:11:19 AM
.. that's what I was thinking ... Cars with fuzz. I'd probably go for a slightly louder vocal too, but it's all academic really.
Great song Michael - I must be one of the few people that actually liked Gary Numan (and who's willing to stand up proud and admit it: "my names Neil and I - ahem - liked Gary Numan" :)
I also really liked the Cars so it's a winner from all angles for me.
Top post,
Neil [ Reply to This ]
thanks &mdash 02/29/08 - 02:21:01 PM
i love the fuzz, but my vox were less than stellar, so they got the low mix treatment. i too LOOVE the cars. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
How weird &mdash 02/29/08 - 12:22:16 AM
I've being listening to 'Replicas' a lot recently, and the keys on this are very 'Do you need the service'. Your voice is of course totally different, great harmonies, and gives this a really dreamy feel [ Reply to This ]
hey steve &mdash 02/29/08 - 02:24:33 PM
i've been doing replicas and telekon (my absolute fave of his). but there are some classic tracks on replicas ("me i disconnect from you" for one). i love when people have similar reference points, makes the whole thing so much more fun. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
I love wire/colin newman &mdash 02/29/08 - 01:50:02 AM
...not so keen on gary numan although i heard a couple of his old tunes on a cover cd of a magazine recently (uncut i think or mojo)
anyway...very good...nice and poppy
me and cat might do a cover of eardrum buzz one day....

in fact, one of the incarnations of my band back in the uk was called eardrumm buzz...so you can see how important wire were to us

hey bryn &mdash 02/29/08 - 02:28:21 PM
yeah Numan has an awful lot of crap, but yet there are some great tracks and ideas too. all i know is if you do that wire cover, i want to be first in line for guitar player. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]

a highly Byrds feel (i always loved them), but your delivery is excellent in every way...Thanx for sharing. [ Reply to This ]
the byrds huh? &mdash 02/29/08 - 02:31:26 PM
you know i was going in the total opposite direction, but i learned about harmonies from listening to all those 60's bands, so it's impossible to escape the influence. always had to answer for that approach when i was a young punk rock clown. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
Very cool &mdash 02/29/08 - 06:43:18 AM
Cool song, Michael... everything sounds great.. vocals, synths, guitars... everything!

very kind of you to say. music is a fun release for me, but i do love it so when people like what i'm doing; always more fun than just subjecting people to my vision. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
Snowball &mdash 02/29/08 - 10:24:38 AM
Great sound Michael. It is as you described, Wire and Tubeway Army PLUS a wee bit of DEVO (I hear a borrowed riff from Snowball at the end). Your vocals are so unexpected for this song. Quite honestly, I can hear myself singing this song, but it would have a typical result and therefore, less interesting, because this is what I consider "my style". My vocal style is modeled (poorly) after Numan and Newman and Mothersbaugh and Ocasek, etc.
I find your vocals to be more rewarding because they are less robotic and it challenges this genre.
My baby took our love
And then she rolled it up
Rolled it up a hill
Like a ball of snow
Like a snowball grows
Until it gets too big
Until she lost control
And it rolled back down
And it rolled back down
And it rolled back down
And it rolled back down [ Reply to This ]
dude &mdash 02/29/08 - 02:18:41 PM
you are a mind reader (or is that mind melder?). you are the first thing I thought of when i posted this "should have had five extra arms do the vocals on this one." if you want to download it and do a lead vocal track for this, i would be stoked to do a re-mix. we could both be singing.
and OH MY GOD; i didn't even realize i ripped of snowball until you pointed that out. now i will hang my head in shame. nah, i'll just take the compliment and run with it. thanks for listening. [ Reply to This ]
Great Nod To The Greats &mdash 02/29/08 - 03:18:45 PM
Hey, I completely ripped off an Ultravox lead without knowing it. A few days later I realized it was from Sleepwalk. Ooops! I was ashamed too, considering how much money I made off of my free download.
Like I said, I would love to sing this song, but it wouldn't stand out like your vocals do. Hey, what the heck. It's a great song. I'll do it!! Maybe we can toss it in the LOST Song Project. [ Reply to This ]

There's a flock of seagulls &mdash 02/29/08 - 03:36:52 PM
nesting in my big hair and the world is melting. Great track Michael - the synth line is perfect - excellent use of the pitch wheel. I just heard on the radio that programmers are now referring to the eighties as oldies/classic rock. [ Reply to This ]
thanks Kevin &mdash 02/29/08 - 04:55:06 PM
glad you dug it. i actually didn't use the pitch wheel at all (probably would have been easier than trying to stretch my fingers over a 3 octave range at 140 bpm).
i just talked with five extra arms and he is going to record the lead vocal over and i'll drop that in the mix. i was thinking that you, him and i should do a record of post punk covers (the 15th by wire is begging for it). we could spend years doing it, then release it as a box set when we retire. Throw in some No Wave &mdash 03/01/08 - 07:51:42 AM
like 3-E from Mars and I'm there. When do we start - I wanna retire. Reminds me of a great Neil Young line from Greendale "I won't retire, but I might retread". [ Reply to This ]

at the root.... &mdash 02/29/08 - 09:42:32 PM
.... there is a 60's tune here.
Synths are a cool choice, dig the fuzzy dice one. the lead one has a nice vintage sound to it as well. I would say vocals really sound different from you. But, the free album that i downloaded had some of that take too it.
Cool electro-pop-rock Michael. [ Reply to This ]
60'S Vibe &mdash 03/02/08 - 03:21:59 AM
Great song Michael. Real 60's vibe. Great mix and as always great vocal delivery. Real Beatlesque ending. Moog sound well mixed. Keep at it. [ Reply to This ]
Fuzzy and clean &mdash 03/02/08 - 07:02:06 AM
I have to say the sound is really great here. The song is one of your more excellent ones. Pop-punk. Better than Gary Numan, I must say.
This is great-

Cool &mdash 03/02/08 - 07:46:45 AM
Thought this was kind of an 80's sound at first, because of the synth, so I looked up Tubeway Army. More punkish than 80's but not as harsh as a lot of the guitar punk I recall. You really channel the rhythm and spirit of this stuff. Vocals are right on and the fuzz contributes to the period feel.
Thanks
Bill

Whoooo, great stuff! Very enjoyable. Nice contrast between the busy keyboard line and the smooth harmonised vocals. Impossible to keep still while listening to this. [ Reply to This ]
The title of the song threw me..... &mdash 03/02/08 - 12:40:51 PM
I was expecting a cover!!! Then I listened and was pleasantly surprised.
It's an excellent song Michael. A great idea to complete the song before work.
You pulled it off nicely.
Take care.

Great song &mdash 03/02/08 - 05:11:44 PM
and terrific sound. Love the guitar and that keyboard riff. I went through a bit of a Gary Numan phase, back when I was a young lad. There were a few months there when I thought modern music had reached its peak with Are Friends Electric, and it was all going to be downhill from there. I was wrong, but sometimes I wonder...Nicely done. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Very cool... &mdash 03/02/08 - 05:25:43 PM
... synth treatment. The arpeggios at the end are hypnotic. And the vocals were great, you'd never say it was an uncomfortable key for you! [ Reply to This ]
