Description
This is my first try at a trance song, I'm really just looking for some feedback on how to improve it. I also don't have proper monitors, so the mix is probably a little too bass heavy, although I'm not entirely sure. Let me know what you think!

Hey, I'm not a trance expert
well, I'm no expert in general! But I can say this is really good, and I don't see (or, rahter, hear) anything wrong with the mix, it sounds just as bass heavy as it should be, imo. The synths and efeccts are way too cool, and the groove is great. Sorry I can't be of help in your search for negative comments, LOL!

just a little advise
the melody is not bad, but you need to stick to 4/4 hits on the bassdrum, unless it's for transitional effects. You need to keep the beat steady. The layered pads are good. Very much vangelis-like. If I were you I would try some cut-off effects with the mod-wheel (if you have a keyboard with a mod-wheel). Some synths in garageband will allow you to control filter cutoff with the mod wheel. (A fun one to play with is "Imperia Pad") Move the mod wheel up and down for a cool effect. With trance, the objective is to surprise the listener or dancer ;) with the introduction of new elements. You have done this well. This melody does not appeal to me that much. I know many people who like this style of trance. One tip with the snare roll is that you should try to run it through with other instruments leading to powerful drum beat. This is called a build-up. 2/3 the way the snare roll leads to nothing. You should try to build up the instruments and melodies on top of either a basic beat or no beat, and then just before the big beat hits, drop the snare roll. When it all boils down, it is really up to you how to make your songs and melodies. trance is a genre where you can be mellow or aggressive, the only goal being to tickle the mind and soul and raise the level of emotion.

good job!

Thanks
Thanks for the comments. Since a lot of the synth parts were fairly repetitive, I tried to create a little tension using the drumbeats (ie leaving out a few bass drum beats, or rolling the snare a little bit). Your points are well-taken though, and I'm going to work on making the buildup a little more fluid
