Thanx my friend Dabe... for the violin trax... that was fun... after doing 100 mixes I’m throwing up my hands and posting this....
A few years ago I was given the assignment... write a poppy kind of song with the opening lyric... “which one am I going to be”... my first impression was... uhhhhg!@^$#@^@# my hands are kind of tied on this one... I wasn’t sure where I would go for any kind of emotional impact, because the line kind of left me flat... I picked up my guitar and thought OK, what could be more stock for a pop tune than a 1-4-5 structure... and I began working on a variation of that with some melodic ideas, but I was still stuck with the opening line...
I started to tap into those early days... those youthful moments when you could see the future wide open before you and ripe with possibilities... the story is about a wood worker, so I also started to imagine that he would build some beautiful instrument instead of pinoccio... I have all sorts of instruments around the house... guitars mandolins violins pianos drums ect. and pretty soon I had verses that provided the emotion that the chorus seemed to lack...
they shut this project down, and this song laid around for a few years because it still felt awkward to me.. recently I decided that I had to get this off the table, and do the work... finish the song... It really needed to have a bridge, so that’s where I went... now the whole thing makes a little more sense to me... everything is leading to that moment in the bridge...
that moment when you realize that life is pregnant with possibility, and potential...
this song is no reflection on how I see myself... I’m 52, and my day came and went... I’m happy... but not delusional... the song is theater, using old memories for a resource and launching pad

Scott, trust me, your moment has far from gone and left. I think it just depends on how you define your moment. You are a wonderful musician, singer and songwriter who shares his music with an appreciative audience around the world and a generous, gracious friend, father and husband. of wood, waiting to fulfill its destiny. It's unusual, and still, it brings a bigger message across.
As far as being 52 and knowing where you are in life, well, sometimes it takes that space to be able to reflect on and express what your hopes and dreams were when you were starting out. I work with 'potential' every day, as a teacher, and very often I would like to echo the sentiment, "youth is wasted on the young." Either that, or bop them on the head until they 'get' it.

Love the vocal harmonies at the chorus.
All the instrument sit real pleasant in the mix
Your acoustic strumming is so refreshing every time you share a recording/well done
the energy that is put forth on the guitar strings is where I'm guessing this tune got started
the vocal build up backed by the fret-less rearing its head...hot
The production;(turns out is outrageous)

The cello is really perfect in a nice register for me
& the violin is 'real' /very hip /at the end its solo.
the percussion is very tasteful & the piano riffing so cool in the acoustic beginning..

I love trees and I love wood, I even have a carving tool just like the one in the picture. The thing is, I would never think that I could listen to a song about a piece of wood all the way through, or much less actually like it. Ha! I really like this! What creative thinking it took to arrive at this neat song, from that title. The music and vocals are excellent also.

Scott-this is so amazing lyric-wise... why can't I do that?! And musically what stands out (not easy to do in this song- which is so darn good) is the passionate and heartfelt vocal. So perfect.

A pithy, poetic allegory, this little chestnut be.
I thought the first part got a bit too musically chaotic during the build, but that may be your mood choice. Then it settles into a lovely chamber piece with real violin (you lucky dog) for the exit. ;)
My choice might have been to group --- and stagger --- the inclusion of some elements so that the drama emerges right at the bridge.
As far as age goes... you never will get any older than *dead*. So any age before that is a good time to do anything you dare dream... or care about.
And who says you're NOT delusional? I'd like to see a note from a qualified professional. LOL

Reminds me a lot of the buddies in the Boston singer-songwriter school, the easygoing yearning and hopeful sound, the happy movement to it; for instance have you ever heard Greg Greenaway? There's a lot of great things going on here, and as always you're the master of them all! Deepest bows!

If you or I were into the serious metal or hard rock thang, I could understand and agree with your assessment. A young person's world unless you play the "old card" as part of the act, maybe. But that's not us.
The nice thing, imho, is that we don't write to "make it big" anymore. Always avoided that mindset from the gitgo. And that's where the absolute best music in the musical universe comes from. The heart with no strings attached.

First of all, You are quite right in saying that, at the age of 52, your day has come and gone. There is no question that 52 is old, terribly old! I am a lot younger than you are -- only a few weeks shy of my 51st birthday (send money only, please; no ties, frogs, or any of the lovely gifts that kids get for their dads' birthdays) -- and, since my day has not even come yet, I'm hoping it will come when I'm 51. I assume that's when it happened for you?
The other way to look at it is to ask yourself who you're writing your songs for... If you're writing them for yourself, if the songs are coming from an inner need to express yourself in that way, then you just keep on doing what you're doing and let the chips fall where they may, and you can carry on doing so for many, many more years. One of my former composition teachers turned 80 last year, and to say he hasn't slowed down at all since he turned 60 would be an understatement... His output from the ages of 60 to 80 is probably significantly higher than it was in the previous 20 years, because, at the age of around 60, for the first time in his life, he finally had time to do a lot of the things he didn't have time for previously, thanks mainly to work and kids.
You've got a lot of great tunes still left in you, waiting to come out, and, although your are seriously old, you've got many years left in which to do this. Lucky for us!
Oh yeah, the song... Loved it! Love the violin; it adds a lot. Like Jim, I didn't feel the violin was quite done when you faded it out, and it also occurred to me that it would have been nice to hear it in short fragments interspersed with the singing earlier. For what it's worth. [ Reply to This ]

I can hear each string on the acoustic - clear as a bell. And that triangle (maybe it's a string harmonic) just rings in the first 8. Top song in your inimmitable style. Excellent playing and singing - but what's new?
A nit (I found a nit!!!): the Warwick needs more volume in the mix - a great bass melody but much too far back for me. Maybe a better way of looking at it might be to drop the volume of nearly everything else so that the bass is more present in the mix.
Love the last little phrase on the fiddle.

Great track, and a lot has been said, but what really strikes me on this is the yearning and youthfulness of the vocal - despite your misgivings with the first line/ title, it feels like you fully commited to it... it's a heartbreaking vocal, and you build the intensity wonderfully. You certainly made the guest list on this.

I think you're one of the guys who sets the standard 'round here for the sort of production that I enjoy...
No bum notes...no stray 60 cycle hum...no fret buzz... lots of space and air... Nothing crowded... Everything clear, clear, clear...
And one heck of a great acoustic guitar sound.
On this one, I also love the violin sound and the last little bits of the violin fade. Oh yeah, and the fretless bass...

and the music really brings your voice to a nice for - front. You have an incredible knack for doing pop radio catching tunes. And the harmonizations are amongst the very best I've heard.
Man , you sure know how to record, play, sing, lyrics with the best of em. But it almost seems like with that golden voice you can almost walk on water pop music wise.. Love how work your leads in such a hit tune fashion.

The first thing I need to mention is your vocal - your voice is great, rich and expressive, and you really perform this one with great verve and feeling.
