Description:
Another sketch from 2004 that I have finally gotten around to working into a song. This may be only version one... or it may be the final. Let me know any thoughts or ideas that you think could develop this and take it to the next level.

A glimpse of a lonely heart and her conflicted isolation.

The next level has arrived: A Day In Her Life-the Rebsie Session

Vocals & guitar: me

Lyrics:
G Em
Rising each morning, a muffin and tea by the window
G Em
Gazing outside at clouds drifting by
Am C G
Replaying memories of what could have been
Am C G
Sure of herself, sitting there without him.
___________
G Em
Walking to work, she pauses alone at the corner
G Em
Never a doubt, she always knows what to think
Am C G
Now as she stands there no longer- can she say
Am C G
Regrets her companions, steps off the curb on her way.
___________
Chorus:
C G Em Am
Never so lonely as she was that night
C G Em Am
Never so lonely, never so right
C G Em Am
Never so lonely as she was that night
C Am G
Never so lonely that night.
____________
G Em
Back at the flat, she reaches to open her mailbox
G Em
Hoping to find the letter that’s never there
Am C G
Telling herself no matter, it’s OK
Am C G
She hurries inside, closing the door on the day.
____________
G Em
Dimming the lamp by her bed, awake in the darkness
G Em
Thoughts of the emptiness since he’s been gone
Am C G
Wondering how it is she’ll carry on
Am C G
Re-assuring herself, she did nothing wrong

Nice song Jack &mdash 03/03/08 - 02:57:32 AM
Sounds like it doesn't need any more instrumentation to me - maybe it's a final! Still a little hiss in there - mainly on the vocal mic I think - but that doesn't take away from tthe song or your performance. Went to a Folk Festival with Jan and Alf (& Jane) last week - you would have loved it ;) Good to see you post again - it seems like it's been a while.
Cheers,
Neil

Needs more?... &mdash 03/03/08 - 11:17:37 AM
I originally heard this as just a guitar-vocal... but then I found myself exploring a violin or cello... plaintively accompanying throughout. I think this is why I wasn't sure if it needed something more to "complete it." The hiss.... that damn pet snake of mine keeps sneaking into my recording studio!
Thanks, Neil. That must have been a good concert you guys took in... cheers.

Folk &mdash 03/03/08 - 05:42:38 PM
One of the headliners was Peggy Seeger, although there was actually a fairly eclectic mix of music from olde English folk songs to zydeco. A really good day of high qua;lity music.

Vocals... melodly... &mdash 03/03/08 - 11:21:17 AM
I haven't sung many songs in this higher voice. I like it when I can pull it off as I think I do here... but it is nice to get confirmation... thanks. The melody has goes back a few years. I always liked it and finally took the time to find a story... the words that seem to match the mood of the melody... again thanks for generous comments. I am glad you like this.

Really nice, Jack &mdash 03/03/08 - 05:55:00 AM
Musically it sounds really great! I'm listening on mediocre headphones and the mix sounds a little on the dark side maybe a tweak or two on the mids. (I think on the guitar track)

The chorus is absolutely beautiful... very well written. For some reason I am reminded of "She's Leaving Home".

[ Reply to This ]
Yes... She's Leaving Home.... &mdash 03/03/08 - 11:29:50 AM
AC- I definitely thought of that Beatle song a few times as this one came together. Nice to know you did, too. The mix probably is a bit on the dark side, partially due to the mood I wanted on the song, but also a possible consequence of my less than successful efforts to "equalize out" some mic recording hiss... not to mention the Martin is naturally a bit bassy and booming. The chorus-- glad you like that. I recorded the vocals three times and added the other guitar to hopefully create some added impact there. So maybe it worked! Thanks, Adam.

Good one Jack &mdash 03/03/08 - 07:25:14 AM
This one is very profound Jack, very true, and can apply to us guys as well. Loneliness sucks!

God bless you,

You got it right there, Rick. All of us have fallen into traps and prisons of our own making. This girl needs to take, what for her would be, a big risk. Contact the guy... own up to her part in the relational difficulties... in effect, embracing, rather than denying, her flaws would lead to relationship. She has it backwards.

Best to you, my firend!

Ahhh... Jack &mdash 03/03/08 - 07:48:42 AM
Nice waking up to a new Dadai song. I can relate to lonely- and to missing people deeply. This girl needs music. Hey, weird.... I downloaded this song to iTunes (on random play) and right after it played, "Every Night" by Paul McCartney came on. They go together perfectly. Your song is very touching, and well sung and played.

"Every Night"... I haven't listened to that song in years. Your mentioning it made me go back and find it and listen. That is lovely song. It's neat that you think they go together. I'll take that any day. Great to have you stop by and leave such nice comments.

the refrain almost has a moody blues flavor to it. I think its solid all the way through. I might have detected a slight loss of the high end, but it could be my speakers. You create an entire mood. passionate and heartfelt.

Good then... &mdash 03/03/08 - 12:56:40 PM
I hadn't thought of the Moody Blues in relation to this song. Someone else mention that. I hear what you're saying... the layered, reverbed vocals in the chorus. The high end is a little lacking... I think you are hearing it right. Thanks for stopping by and thank you, Karma, for the nice comments.

I think you could add an electric tuba with heavy distortion and this tune would still be nice...

But, seriously: this is a very touching song...and, as I watch my little one grow, I can't help but think of her possibly living this, as did I and so many men and women...wish I could protect her...

Despite the distortion noise I hear in the mix this is an excellent piece of songwriting. The chorus is great,as A.C stated a really strong Moody Blues feel in the vocal.Really fine tune.

Excellent song writing Jack, &mdash 03/03/08 - 04:43:43 PM
but you really need to finish this off with a full on production. Maybe a Bass, some drums, a little lead guitar fill here and there, possibly some piano parts sprinkled around tastefully. It's such a great bit of writing that it begs to have every advantage to show it off as it could be.

Don't misunderstand, I really love the song as it is because it says so much in such a fine way. But I'd love to hear it produced to the nines.

Anyway, great piece of work here Jack. Kudos on the playing and especially on the writing and vocal work.

Version 2? &mdash 03/04/08 - 11:53:54 AM
You may be on to something, Ed. I don't think I have the expertise to pull that off by myself or with my setup. I'd be open to hearing any more you have to say, though. I originally envisioned this with more instrumentation, but opted for the simple folk take. Your comments are welcomed and it's neat to know you think this is a good song. What I think I need sometimes is a talented bunch of collaborators, a good recording studio, and George Martin. Think you could arrange that? ;)

Much thanks...

nice sweet... penultimate &mdash 03/03/08 - 05:21:40 PM
Not quite final, I would suggest bringing the guitar level down slightly, it is a little boomy and sounds like it may be clipping sometimes on the left, or at least getting close. But the overall sound, music, lyrics, and singing are exquisite.

Hey, Rebsie... thanks for coming by for a listen and for your nice comments. Early on when I was practicing this song, I wondered how this would be if it was sung completely by a female vocalist. I did think of you. If you find yourself bored... needing something to do, I'll send you the guitar track. I know I'd look forward to hearing that. Again, thanks.

how you paint a picture of love gone a way. I think you seem to be at a high level of creativity when you sing about lost love. You have a nice hauntingness about your style. Especially like the texture of the guitar and how it is recorded so will. High vocal noes are very effective. I think these types of tunes are my favs of mine of yours. The romantic lost love soulfulness really brings out those creative juices in you it seems Jack!

Way to go!

Well, Bill... you hit on something I hadn't really thought about. I do have a number of songs written around the theme of love lost. You inspired a thread on the topic that I just started. It's encouraging to know you liked my meager attempt at fingerstyle acoustic and the song in general. I am always glad to see you come listen and comment. I really appreciate it... cheers, ex-tiler. :)

I actually lived just outside of Buffalo for two years as a kid (born in Albany). So I am kind of a Buffalo native. Glad you like the song, Joe. And you certainly have my permission to sing this... I'm flattered! I think you can swing it even without the tuba... just tell them it was written by an old Buffalo boy from way back... heheh. Thanks, and best to you... a forlorn ballad. and it only took 4 years.
A nicely written tune from the eleanor rigby files. besides the nicely done vocals I also like the story here. an odd coincidence, i have one i did 4 years ago along the same line. i keep thinking i would go back to it, but it just never happens. it must be in a odd time signature that throws me. well' maybe in another 4 years.

very nice tune Jack, I liked it.

Maybe you need to pull out your old tune and we'll put them both out on a 45 rpm (after fighting over who's song goes on the A side :)
