Description:
Last year I recorded a one take version of this idea (called Old Jam). Here is an Older version with the piano broken into four takes: The first is solo with no time fixing. The second is very short and counts as the official "theme". The third and fourth are pretty long with some time fixing. I struggled with the percussion and have held this back because of that, but I tuned down the volumes of the percussion so its just there to keep the beat going, hopefully without distracting from the improvising.

The picture is of this year's robot at our scrimmage. The kids really worked hard this year! BTW isn't the ball really big? The robot is 5 feet tall.

Cool... &mdash 03/04/08 - 06:57:17 PM
Bill, I am thoroughly enjoying your interesting counterpoint against that rhythmic bass. The "fuzz stop" is so pleasant to my ears and you use it effectively when you bring it in. Just a loping little number that pops along with all this mellow resonance. Must enjoyable. You move into unexpected places, too, and that keeps your comp interesting. So nice to hear this.
Peace.

Always look forward to your comments. Getting resonance from a GarageBand setup is not always easy, but that is what pianos can do thats special. I'm glad the playing stayed interesting throughout, as this is a bit longer than I usually allow.

this is awesome. love the rhodes and synths mixed together. i love your stuff, you play really well, but everything you do is so evocative (and not merely a showcase for your chops). really nice piece. hey what did you use for the rhodes sound? i have a great rhodes, but am not about to drag it upstairs to record with? excellent.

Micheal &mdash 03/05/08 - 03:28:57 PM
I get the rhodes sound by playing my clavinova through garageband's electric piano and adding overdrive. You need to adjust the brightness and source volume as well as the overdrive to get the sound you want. Probably varies with the touch of your keyboard. I haven't used an actual Rhodes before, but they are put together in a way similar to the Clavinova with fully mechanical key action, that might be important.

peacepiano &mdash 03/05/08 - 11:18:24 PM
here's one i did with my Rhodes Mark V:
http://www.macjams.com/song/30741

i used to have a clavinova and the action is so much easier than the rhodes (i;m surprised i don't have carpal tunnel syndrome after gigging with the thing for awhile). and you're right, distortion is key.

Seemingly indeed. I will not provide a full accounting of the mixing time and the time improving the timing of some of the rougher parts, but its good that after that it still has the spontaneity that only comes from an improv.

there are some nice warm analog sounding synths in there too... sounds like a late night... turn the lights down... close your eyes... and follow it where it will lead... exploration at it's finest...

Robots are paying off for my youngest :) On the other hand, there is a young lady in my conceptual Physics class who is paying for college with her singing, although what she has gone through to get there makes engineering look like a cake walk.

It was good meeting you at the MJ gathering.

Flow &mdash 03/12/08 - 01:42:35 PM
Bill, the percussion is ideal in this. It holds all the voices in this track together and never gets in the way. Besides, the rest of the movement in this track is really great. You played really well in this whole song, and I can always pick your piano out of a tune now. The tone of your keys is a signature now. I like this track a lot, and I agree with Jiguma, it reminds me of a time-lapse construction project.

Glad you like the tune. After spending hours mixing this I played it for my wife and she curled up her nose and said all she could hear were tambourine loops. Well, I was tired, so I turned down the percussion levels and posted the song without letting her hear it again, guess I adjusted them the right amount :)

Mesmerizing &mdash 03/18/08 - 02:21:26 AM
This tune is mesmerizing! I can't quite put my finger on it but it feels very 70's or something. All I know is it transports me back in time and I feel younger. I can picture this song playing on TV where they have a time lapse of car taillights streaking by. I could also hear this in one of the Ocean's 11,12, or 13 movies (they have great soundtracks). Great work!

Nice contrast in synth tones &mdash 04/01/08 - 07:42:09 PM
An easygoing syncopated chain of melodies with fun flourishes and noodling that keeps interest building to hear what's coming around the next sonic corner. Rhythm accompaniment is understated and lets the melody/counter come through.

Tres cool Bill,
