Description
My father loved folk type music. Some of his favorite artists were the LimeLiters, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, etc. I grew up with most of this music radiating through the house.
My father could not play a single note on any kind of instrument. When I picked up the guitar he used sit for hours and listen to me play absolutely nothing of any real interest. When I was done he would tell me how much he enjoyed listening to me play. No one was ever more supportive of my music than him.
Over the years he had some favorite songs: Fennario done by Joan Baez was one of them. He also loved Cats in the Cradle (Harry Chapin) because it so aptly described our lives and relationship. He worked very hard and often was not around. Another favorite of his was Mr. Tamborine Man.
When I started to play with our band he became quite ill. Often was in and out of the hospital and I decided I would try and record a few of his favorites. In my spare time I did Tamborine Man, Cats in the Cradle and this rendition of Fennario. They weren't really my style of music but through my love and respect for him I was glad to do them.
Unfortunately the records of Cats and Tamborine were lost. But I do have Fennario. I played everything in this and did the vocals. I'm not much of a vocalist as you will hear.
This was all done on analog tape. I was able to play this for my Dad as he laid in the hospital after a bout of surgery. It brought tears to his eyes that I would play something specifically for him.
Over the years he used to ask for this song over and over. He kept losing his copy. I would put it on his computer, he'd play it then ask me a week later to put it on again. He'd lost it. He died in 1993. As I remember he asked for this song again a week before his death and I didn't have the time to get it over to him. I'll regret that for the rest of my life.
A word to those still with parents. Make the time.
