"Although more than 3 out of ten soldiers meet the criteria for a "mental disorder", fewer than half of them receive help.... There is no well-coordinated or well disseminated approach to providing behavioral heath care to service members and their families and relatively few high quality mental health programs in the U.S. military... there are approximately 700,000 children in the US with at least one parent deployed on military service .... 4 out of 10 army and navy positions for active duty licensed clinical psychologists remain unfilled .. and only 10-20% of the military's clinical psychologist are trained to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.... suicide and divorce rates are at concerning percentages."

Powerful emotional stuff.
Thanks for this touching piece of work. The music and the samples are pretty stunning. The spaciousness of the instruments works well with the mood. The kids voice is a killer.

i had a reall hard time coming to terms with this ... was written and shelved man times. an NPR program pushing the song in the final direction it would take. worked a few years as a counselor and say the devastation mental turmoil can create ... anyroad u r too kind and thanks! [ Reply to This ]

This is great. Your vocal performance on this is outstanding - you express the lyrics beautifully, with all those potent images and lines ("I'm so sick of me") The instrumentation is excellent - love the piano, and the percussion is very effective, not overdone or in the way. Jack, I think you had the original posted at one time. It was powerful then, now it just really moves. You guys did a really fine job here. This song reaches right to the heart. It also sounds like it touches really close to home too. I guess all of us know at least one person so afflicted. Back in the Nam days it was all too common. Your writing and performance here make the song.

Well done in all aspects... of all the recent songs about war I don't know that this issue that affects survivors has been addressed... Amazing that for all the things we do well how many other things we let slip through the cracks... gotta wonder why this isn't part of the plan...

Heavy hitting, really excellent work here. The music has an almost circus-like feel, an irony in itself... and the part that brought tears was the "Daddy? I love you daddy..." your singing and lyrics pull off the resigned weariness and desperate helplessness, but with a wish for help, that is heartbreaking. And it wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the cold hard facts that this is so prevalent. And worse, that war has been doing this to people for thousands of years... so... there's no sign of let-up. Wow. Very powerful work Jack & Michael!

Sounds sad that there isn't enough help. My daughter is the manager of a social agency in Hayward Ca. and is upset with the government for not giving enough funding for the mentally disturbed that are walking the streets with out any help. Or in other cases very little help. She just received a big promotion to manager. It is interesting to hear how things are operated in these agencies and it always is very pretty.
