Description:
A tribute to every bad decision I ever made.
Lyrics:
What I Do To You
You fall forward
I stumble back again
I guess it’s progress of a sort
I’m so bored but
It’s only natural
Reality’s knocking at the door
What I do to you
What you do to me
Honey it’s a wonder we get anything done
What I do to you
What you do to me
Honey it’s a wonder we’ve got anything
I’m at the door
I’m taking the consequence
See if my resolution holds
Too straighforward
So let’s mess it up again
Don’t need a reason anymore
Now the room’s in disarray
And this coffee’s bitter
What’s that people say
About all that glitters?
You fall forward
I stumble back again
I guess it’s progress of a sort

GREAT POP &mdash 03/07/08 - 10:11:15 PM
Great pop tune Dajama! Really sounds like Bryan Ferry and I mean that in a very cool and sophisticated way. Started out without confidence in the vocal but you really picked it up within the first verse. Great job! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks a lot &mdash 03/08/08 - 01:13:46 PM
Glad you liked it. I know what you mean about the vocal - not sure if it's how I sing it, or if it's that the melody lacks something at the beginning (maybe starting too low perhaps?) Fun to do, and I'm happy you enjoyed listening to it. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Sweet &mdash 03/07/08 - 11:51:17 PM
This is a great head-bobbing, foot-tapping song. I really like the bridge part that starts with "Now the room's in disarray". Great lyrics. The lyrics kind of remind me about climbing out of a well taking one step up but falling two steps backwards. This is a great relationship song and I think a lot of people could relate to it in some way. Thanks for sharing! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, man &mdash 03/08/08 - 01:27:04 PM
Glad you liked it. It is what it is, and what it is is really just a pop/rock song. If it makes your head bob and your foot tap, then my work here is done! One reason I pursued the idea was that my son loved the initial version I banged out on acoustic guitar and danced every time I played it, so I reckoned there had to be something there! I was thinking about writing cheerful lyrics more suited to younger ears, but I guess I don't have them in me! Anyway, I liked the idea of the contrast between the bright music and the slightly darker ideas in the words, if that makes sense.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I really enjoyed your latest, and I look forward to hearing more from you soon. Thanks again. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Yeah, this has a real Ferry feel to it, very 80's pop feel to it (with added nasty guitars). Great guitar work - I love the solo - and another nice vocal, very nicely understated. This is such a strong song I could imagine a very pop/ girl group version of this. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, dude &mdash 03/08/08 - 05:20:53 PM
Glad you liked this. Funny you should mention girl groups - my wife said she could imagine Hannah Montana singing it! Happy you like the solo and the "nasty' guitars in general. I was aiming for a raucous racket and I think I got there, although I still can't help feeling the guitar over the chorus could have more wallop. I'm never happy...Thanks for stopping by, Steve. Cheers. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Brilliant sound &mdash 03/08/08 - 05:28:19 AM
This grabbed right at the first note. Hat's off for the production quality.
The song is fantastic and very well structured. And great lead guitar.
I'm turning to gold.

I was just listening to your latest - very impressive, man. You have great lyrics. Happy you liked this one. It's a pop confection, but that's what I like about it, I think. Delighted you liked the lead. I suck at lead guitar, and it takes me a long time to achieve anything I'm happy with. For this song, I did about 25 takes and (you guessed it!) ended up using the first one! Glad you think it worked out. Thanks again for stopping by and commenting. I appreciate it. Peace. I cracked up when I read you did 25 takes and ended up using the first. I can totally relate.
You should post that as a topic on the forum.

Cool intro! &mdash 03/08/08 - 05:31:55 AM
Very cool intro!!! Is it keyboard guitar? The distorted guitar tone is also very good. Nice mix. The song sound all perfect to me. Really good lyrics and vocals too. Give us more!!! [ Reply to This ]
Hey Massa &mdash 03/08/08 - 10:01:28 PM
Thanks very much for stopping by and commenting. Glad you enjoyed this. No, the guitar is not keyboards. It's electric guitar. I plucked the strings rapidly and then added the effect to get that sound. Glad you liked it. I'm enjoying listening to your stuff. Looking forward to hearing your next one too. Dave, trademark guitars, unique vocals, depth of lyric, all these are a given and are only part of the toolkit of the master of Relational Rock. Great overall production. I was really excited to get the email alert that you had a new song out. Your music is an absolute treat in so many ways. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Yeah, this is supposed to be fun and light, so I was aiming for a certain feel - the kind of poppiness that sounds so easy when you hear it, but which is incredibly hard to do, I think. I'm happy you think it succeeded on some level. Thanks for listening. Cheers. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

I really wish, Dave... &mdash 03/09/08 - 09:47:30 PM
...that you would stop mining my past life and general all around psyche for your songs... Oh sure, they come out great and all, but it's like finding my mind out walking around without me...
Nevertheless, this is a great recording of a great song. I continue to love your voice. Yes, I hear that touch of Bryan Ferry, and also a bit of a Roxy-ness to the rhythm...
But the problem I have with making critical comments is that when a song is really good I just stop listening that way... Like, what? I was supposed to be listening critically?
This is just great...

Hi, Ed &mdash 03/10/08 - 05:23:35 PM
Thanks for the kind words, and thanks also for all that source material! Well, if you will post your journals online, what do you expect? Hee hee. I take it, then, you can relate to the lyrics in some fashion. I wrote them with the - perhaps foolish - assumption that I now make less or fewer stupid mistakes than I used to! Hubris perhaps. Maybe now I just make different ones! Glad you liked the song, though. Thanks as always for your encouragement. You are too kind. Cheers. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Sorry I'm late Dave &mdash 03/09/08 - 10:58:29 PM
Top bass driving this - works really well with the straight-up drum track - like the double tracking. Your vocal starts out a bit tentative but soon gets into the groove. Terrific song - really good "alt pop" feel. You're sure moving ahead in leaps and bounds.
Cheers,
Neil [ Reply to This ]
I'm delighted you mentioned &mdash 03/10/08 - 05:35:00 PM
the bass. The song went from a strummed song on the acoustic to the way it is now because of the bass. I was trying to get something that sounded decent on the bass, and I was having a hard time. I discarded numerous efforts, and then I came up with the riff that runs through the verse. I doubled it on the guitar, and the other parts kind of fell into place from there. It amazes me how songs come together sometimes. It feels like it's different every time for me. I wonder if other people have some systematic approach, because I know I don't!
Glad you enjoyed this one, Neil. Thanks for your encouraging words and for lending your ear. I appreciate it. Cheers. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

Great song! &mdash 03/10/08 - 09:31:27 PM
Awesome guitar to open up; really moves well. This is one of your best all-around efforts with fairly familiar feeling (at least for me). Great tension in the verses countering with the flowing release of the refrain. And then that guitar comes back just when you need it; a great sounding lead. Well done!
Joe.

Glad you enjoyed it. I love your comments about the guitars and how the song goes from more restrained to wild abandon. I was hoping to get that kind of dynamic range. Thanks so much for stopping by and listening. A real song? Hee hee. I'm delighted! Glad you enjoyed it and happy it hooked you. Minority Report &mdash 03/11/08 - 11:45:16 PM
This is a very catchy pop/rock tune, David, with lots of great elements going for it. A great piece of song writing, performance and production in several respects.
Unlike the majority though, I didn't like the overly-distorted guitar parts. I think they disturb what is otherwise a very fine musical texture you've created. Chorused guitar, perhaps tremolo, would have maintained that texture without sacrificing the power I think you were after (*raucous* I believe is the word you used).
Just my immediate reaction after listening a couple of times... still, I liked this a lot. ;)
