Description:
The further antics of "(Lunar) Eclipse." Alternate title: "And The Neutrinos Danced Unnoticed Through Us All."
After taking a week off from this one, I've extended it to 4 minutes so far.
Now with the addition of bassoon, tambourine, percussion... and the usual "nipping and tucking"... with new distinct harmonies and instrumental interplay. The latter quarter is a rambling toward the direction and path its taking (undeveloped and simply chords at this point). Still playing. Still more to come.
Score: Playing = 90%; Pencilling = 10%
Thanks for listening.

Shades of Holst! Chords and progression wise, perhaps some of it is just a little too close to,'The Planets'? I like how you manage to use quite simple melodic ideas, but build interesting musical ideas and thoughts around it--very effective. Rendering wise, I felt the strings were a tad too loud in places. I liked the wordless choir. I also liked the brass interplay near the end. Have you considered doing more with the tempi? A lot of the music I have heard from you tends to be quite sectionalized with juxtaposing thoughts. Perhaps if you play with the contrasting tempi more to emphasize the contrasting sections, you may get more impact? I really like this piece quite a lot! [ Reply to This ]

... re-listening to "The Planets," Saturn, to be exact, I realize the blatant similarity! I have painted myself into a corner, but am content that I have gotten there, with no denial there is an obvious similarity. I appreciate your detailed analysis, although I am confused as to how to utilize your suggestions, especially the 'tempi' contrast. Your vast knowledge of symphonic orchestration magnifies my amoebic understanding of such a complex system of organization. That you have taken the time to articulate in your critique is an honour. If I don't apply your suggestions in later versions... its probably because i don't fully understand the process.
Thank you. [ Reply to This ]

A lot of growth this time. Sounds better each time. Do you envision this getting a lot longer as instruments take turns with the themes? I see the pencilling % has gone up :)
Thanks

I have done this as well--worked hard to compose a piece, only have myself or someone else point out that,er...this sounds A LOT like... I think it happens to all of us really. I wonder if there are any original chord progressions left out there really? Holst was a master, and The Planets is one of my favourite pieces.
With the tempi, I was thinking that since your music features a lot of contrasting musical ideas, oftentimes in rather quick succession(which I like), playing on that may heighten the impact? Perhaps when you have a contrasting section or musical thought, considering making the speed of the music more markedly different than the section before--either much faster or much slower. This may help to bring more attention to the new section.
As for amoebas, p'shaw. We're all people making music, and yours is indeed of a high order!
Cheers. [ Reply to This ]

say there is nothing new under the sun ( re Soulima's helpful comments) and I think everything is a reflection of something else, which doesn't take anything at all away from your inspired and inspiring abilities as a relatively 'new' composer. If you want a pun, this piece is 'out of this world' for me. I love it and look forward to the future additions to it, regards M [ Reply to This ]

how you utilize the cymbals in your productions and the fantasy sounds you obtain. You really know how to utilize the trombone especially which etches in my mind your dramatic-fantasy style.
Such a staple here at MJ!
