Description:
This is a sentimental song about being away from home. I guess watching the TV News pictures of those serving in foreign lands was the inspiration for this in the first place. Then I got to reminiscing about times I was away from home and feeling very homesick... then realising that the love was still coming from home and visa versa, which made the situation sometimes even more poignant. I had a silly croaky throat thing that won't go, so it comes across in my voice as emotion in parts... so get your hanky out LOL. Oh yes.... almost forgot to say that I tried a bit of orchestration in this, so please don't come down on me like a ton of bricks, as I'm no musician.

Like what you did with the piano holding down the rhythm of the song, and the flute (I think) and strings providing a counter point to the rest of the song.

Love the lyrics Maurice, they are very special and moving. The thoughts run true my friend, and the song and music does too.

I have to agree with Ibstrat.....emotion is as important in music as anything else. You always have touching lyrics and melody in these kind of songs. I also think you did an excellent job with the arrangement!

Lovely song and sentiments Maurice,

Lots to like here - your vocal is done really well (although I could do with less fx - your voice is definitely good enough to have it pretty much unadorned by delay and such). It sounds like you're singing behind a screen or something.

Backing sounds like a pro arrangemeny - would be really interesting to hear it done by real (as in horn/string) players.

Excellent track - could definitely improve the vocal recording though.

I tried all sorts of settings with the vocal in the equalizers and that was the best that I could get at this point, my vocal being as it was/is at this time still LOL. I used the reverb to try to smooth out the corners. The backing Horns and Strings are from GB Symphony Orchestra and played on individual tracks (by me) I've not used them before, hence my 'ton of bricks' comment LOL. Mo, This is so heartfelt.. it can make me cry on a sad day. I have been far away from home for most of my teenage and adult life, just because it is a sacrifice I have to make to build my future. Every holiday tugs a string at my heart, because more often than not I could not be with my loved ones... This song speaks volumes for me. When I sit down to reflect on my life, it almost makes me tear up to realize that I have spent little time with my family... but then I derive strength from the fact that even far away from home, they accompany me in spirit and they are rooting for my success, my health and my happy life...

Home.. what a sad, happy message!

PS: You sang this with so much heart. My only wish, you record it with a more pro mic. It doesn't take anything away from your wonderful performance, but I think a pro mic will enhance it a few notches even.

I see that your mic isn't a shabby brand either... The vocal recording problem I perceive might be in the mixing... maybe add a little reverb or equalize it to add more mid-range freq.

I'm really pleased that you liked this and that it has that effect. So sorry too that you find yourself in the situation that you do in being away from loved one, but I hope it's only temporary so that you can all be together again at some time. As long as you all keep in touch regularly it can ease the pain.
I tried all sorts with this song recording wise, but I hasten to add that I don't think it would have sounded half as emotional except for my throat condition LOL. I tried different keys too, so this might not be the right key for me LOL. I just couldn't tell, my throat was so bad (not sore.... just scratchy sounding)There is reverb on and I do use the equalizer to try for a smooth warm sound but with clarity.... but it never comes out like that. As a matter of fact I'm thinking of going for a new mic (a Sure) which I loved to use when I was singing prof. many years ago. I can't seem to get used to this Sennheizzer. But thanks so much Leon for calling in and listening;I really do appreciate your comments. Sorry for the delay but I was away a couple of days, regards M

Songs from the heart are always the best ones, Maurice... and this is a perfect example.

Whatever you may lack in musicianship is MORE than compensated for by your musical sensibilities. You did a lovely job here giving your sentiments a musical body that communicates those sentiments very well. ;)
