Description:
This is one I had done a while back, but finally revisited tonight to lay down some backing percussion, courtesy of the GB Rock kit and a keyboard.
There's a lot going on here soundscape wise so any recommendations on eq-ing or dancing with the mix would be appreciated.
Hardware:
Strat and Midi keyboard

This is a great groove &mdash 03/11/08 - 09:34:00 PM
You really know how to get some sweet sounds from that guitar - great touch and great sounds. The keyboard sound is nice, and adds a lovely rhythmic touch. The mix could use some tweaking, I'd say. The drums are way too low, in my opinion, and kind of buried in the mix. Also, is that a bass, or is that the guitar playing a bass pattern? Either way, I'd bring that forward in the mix, too. Other than that, there are things I'd do differently, but they're all just tweaks. Get the drums and bass up there, I'd say. Worth mentioning that I think it would certainly be worth the effort - this is a great track, and I think it could sound even better. Very cool. NIcely done, my friend. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Good observations &mdash 03/11/08 - 09:50:04 PM
After I listen to it again I can see where your suggestions would add some punch to this.
There is no bass line as you were wondering, just another guitar part. I couldn't find a bass sound that fit so I decided to leave it out for now. If I can ever get the patience to try and figure out EQ I might be able to free up some spectrum for a good bass line.
Thanks for the constructive and encouraging words! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks! &mdash 03/12/08 - 06:34:57 AM
Those are great affirming words there my friend. Glad you feel this has a touch of what rock used to be.
I agree with you that they just don't make it like they used to when it comes to a good guitar-driven rock tune. You can see hints of it here and there but it's most definitely not the norm anymore.
So if I can give a taste of that to the handful of people who listen to my music then I can feel pretty good about that.

Nice one &mdash 03/12/08 - 02:32:11 AM
And I'm still working on that song BUT I have some problem to find drums to fit in like I want... I'm not satisfied with my attempt so far..
I d-load this one 2 and play around with it... I agree with "dajama" you get so nice sound from that guitar BUT the drums are too low and yes a bas I know what you are talking about it's always the heavy part.
Take care

Drums and such &mdash 03/12/08 - 06:51:24 AM
Glad you liked it Kenta, and as I listen to it more and more I agree that there is room to make the drums more front and centre, the kick drun especially. I've got a little shaker sound in the right channel that cuts through really nciely and it's no louder so I have some learning to do about what kinds of sound can be heard through the mix.
As for the tune of mine you are working on, that was recorded without a click track or drums so the tmepo may be all over the place. If you are having a hard time getting loops to fit over it that would be why. Feel free to abandon that if it's causing too much grief and maybe you can try another tune of mine down the road. Now that I am exploring percussion and loops myself, I am beginning to see how infuriating my "just grab the guitar and hit record" approach can be! That's why all the percussion on this song was done manually with the keyboard.
Thanks for the continued support! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Pete &mdash 03/12/08 - 12:27:12 PM
I maybe give up but NOT yet I'll have it still in GB and practices is always good... But you have right about the song it is a hard one to make drum loops to fit... Yea! maybe I should check some more from you... I think I'll do that.
By the way I'm working on that LIOLI thing too... I think it's fun to have many (different) songs to work with.. When you be little stuck in one you jump to one other...hehehe
Take care

My next song will be against a click track or drum loop. I promise!

Hehe.. lol &mdash 03/14/08 - 03:03:10 PM
That sound great my friend.... I have many drum loops but find some who fits all the way through that song is for me more and more impossible... I maybe do something else with that guitar sound? a synth or something else..hehe
We have to see what I come to do... But I still learn something on the road.
Cheers from the beers

Cool! &mdash 03/12/08 - 09:25:41 AM
Pete, I agree with Dave, this is a rockin tune. Different genre, but it reminds me of Eric Clapton's slinky in that there is a lot of guitar traffic. I think Dave's suggestions are right on. One trick I use to see if the drums and bass are cutting through is to make an MPS and put it on my laptop to see how it sounds through the laptop speakers. If the drums and bass don't cut through I know I need to push them more.
Good Job,

Great Tip &mdash 03/12/08 - 09:46:23 AM
That's a great idea, because that's when I usually find the deficiencies of the mix really stand out. It probably doesn't help that I don't have true monitors (just some old soundblaster speakers) so I do the majority of the mixing with headphones.
Thanks for the tip, and encouraging words! [ Reply to This ]
Swaggers Load &mdash 03/12/08 - 09:41:06 AM
having read the previous comments, I'm sure everybody knows what they're talking about re: bringing some percussion more up front. This isn't the genre I do music in so what do I know - but if I hadn't read those suggestions, I wouldn't have thought of them myself. So for what it's worth, I really enjoyed this as is, and it's a keeper right now! Thanks [ Reply to This ]
Thanks! &mdash 03/12/08 - 11:08:36 AM
I'm happy that you can appreciate it for what it is. Although there is always room for improvement and learning, I wouldn't put it out there if I wasn't happy with how it sounded either.

This is like one of those bootlegs or demos... &mdash 03/15/08 - 04:34:47 PM
...that sometimes falls into your hands, and it's rough and the mix isn't perfect, but you keep coming back to it and enjoying every listen...
So musically, it's just fine... I could listen to this, or something like this, and take it on its own terms...
AND, someone with a bit of patience could re-mix this from the bass and drums up, and it could get clearer, more spacious and punchier, and it could probably take the polishing without losing the qualities that make it special...

And since you asked... &mdash 03/15/08 - 05:10:09 PM
If I was going to think about a new mix, the thing that strikes me is that most of the action in this track right now is in the midrange... it might be cool to eq the bass so as to keep it in the bass, bring up the drums, and just generally mess around with the guitar eq and panning so that everything ends up with its own space...

Re-mix &mdash 03/17/08 - 07:52:39 AM
Ed, it makes perfect sense what you are saying so I think I will take a stab at this. Might take a little while as I am solo parenting for the week but I believe this is a project that I am ready to sink my teeth into.
Thanks for the thoughtful advice as always! [ Reply to This ]
Hi! this one &mdash 03/20/08 - 01:40:09 PM
Yes!! &mdash 03/21/08 - 12:54:40 AM
Hi Peter,
That is some smoking guitar playing. I agree with everyone else that the drums are too buried. Play around with it and work on it with fresh ears after you have left it alone for a while. This does remind me of how rock and roll should sound. They say that things that go out of style come back in style at some point in time. I would keep writing music exactly like this and in like 2015 "classic rock" will be "new" again! [ Reply to This ]
2015 &mdash 03/21/08 - 06:40:32 PM
By time 2015 rolls around I'll have moved on to British New Wave or something. But God I hope not!
Thanks for sounding in! [ Reply to This ]
great &mdash 03/28/08 - 10:42:50 AM
guitar sound going on and a very full backing as you said, but as Kenta and others suggest the drums could come up more. Nice playing though, cheers M [ Reply to This ]
Thanks &mdash 03/28/08 - 12:44:22 PM
Glad you liked. And the sentiment regarding the hidden drums seems quite unanimous so I'll be sure to correct that for the next one. [ Reply to This ]
right then pete &mdash 04/09/08 - 08:56:04 AM
still discovering your catalogue of tunes ... nice guitar work here .. somehow reminds me of early neil young ... and that is a compliment! [ Reply to This ]
Way Cool! &mdash 04/09/08 - 09:37:23 AM
Glad to have intrigued you enough to have you delve further into my tunes. Makes my day actually!
As far as the Neil Young comparison goes, it must be something up here in the Canadian water! [ Reply to This ]
