Keywords:
quick and dirty yet soothing pop (1)
Description:
saw an ex-girlfriend and it reminded me of how i felt the entire time we were together. she was a beautiful fragile catastrophe at the time and tore me up. she's doing really good now and said she was sorry.

i recorded this really quickly as i only had about an hour and a half to write and record. actually started out with a different melody, and when i recorded the guitar this one popped out. this is indie pop, with a hint of 60's melancholy. maybe the Shins come to mind.

Lyrics:
i don't want to say
something that ill regret tonight
i need your lips, your eyes, your smile
i need a paradise

i need some time to sleep
i need some rest and food to eat
i'll sag like a tenement tonight
it's just not fair to you

Chorus:
you don't need to feel so sad
we're doing better than you think
we both have someone
to hold at night

yeah i know
it's like you're on fire inside
it's just your head, it's playing games
and getting the best of you

i don't think you know how much i
worship and adore you and
you're always taking jabs at me
but it's okay

Chorus:
you don't need to feel so sad
we're doing better than you think
we both have someone
to hold at night

Bridge:
later on, later on
when i'm gone
you'll take back those words
run away, run away if you must
i'll wait here for you

we're doing better than you think
we both have someone
to hold at night

ooh's and ah's (ad nauseam)

Hardware:
intel mini mac, m-audio keyboard, ibanez bass, ibanez artcore hollowbody electric, line6 toneport, a lime green guitar cable,

Very nice song and thanks for the heart feel story.
This song made me think back a little on my kids and that lady I had before I meet my lovely wife.

Cheers

nice one &mdash 03/14/08 - 07:45:59 PM
yes the shins do come to mind, and maybe a little 'stars' too, but it's all you for sure. not sure how you can crank this gem out in an hour and a half, but kudos to you for doing so! well done!

oh &mdash 03/14/08 - 08:13:58 PM
it's easy: come up with 3 chords, lay them down with a simple bass and drum part, quickly sketch out some lyrics and then throw the vox on. make sure to leave all mistakes intact and use only first takes for the vocals. as far as mixing goes, that took about a half an hour. not so good at it, so i just usually thrash out a mix, throw on some reverb and i'm done with it.

thanks for listening, glad you liked it.

i always tend to work pretty quickly, but this was faster than most. i guess you could say i've played 10,000 variations on this song in my life, so it just kind of comes out. thanks for listening, appreciate it.

sing a sad song... &mdash 03/14/08 - 08:21:24 PM
...and make it better.
very cool. you combined a bit of melancholy but make it have a good warm feel all over. great harmonies. cool chord progression, shweet guitar line!

and that lime green guitar cable sounded extra cool!

so glad you came by. this one was actually super easy for me; pretty much wrote itself. it's amazing what you can do with G-C-D. thanks so much for the kind words.

love it! &mdash 03/14/08 - 09:27:40 PM
I'm most intrigued that you "had" only that much time to do this in. I wish I had such a fire up my pants to get my recording done. I work at snail's pace.

But the sentiment penetrates every space in this song. I'm in awe.

Maybe add some variety in your oohs, as far as dynamics, maybe in the drums or something?

Sounds like a sweet girl, and I'm glad she's doing better now. Don't we all have our troubled times? This song is touching. I love that chorus, especially knowing what ultimately happens to the relationship.

Thanks for sharing it with us!

thanks estellie &mdash 03/15/08 - 12:58:58 AM
glad you liked. she is a sweet girl. i wanted it all to be pretty simple, i mixed up the drums more at first then just left the 3 different sections and fills. i did cheat on the oohs at the end; they were an afterthought so i did a few and then just cut and paste the last half of them.

with a hasty approach comes mistakes, like i forgot to play the chord progression 3 times after the bridge, si there is only 2/3 of the fake chorus there. luckily i am totally lazy and always willing to say "good enough." thanks so much for listening.

I don't know what it is but every time &mdash 03/14/08 - 10:03:45 PM
I hear your music I want to hang up the old computer and slide the guitar under the bed - for all eternity. This is simply cool to the 100th power.

you are far too kind. you are always right there on the new stuff, and it's always appreciated. your new tune is a killer BTW.

I agree .... &mdash 03/14/08 - 11:41:09 PM
... with Feter on the Lennon reference .... and wow when the exes get songs written about them (maybe both the good with the bad) .... it's still an honour cause it means you actually thought about them after they became exes .... I always like your lyrics too .... vox spot on (as usual) and harmonies nice and mixed to a tee ! Always look forward to checking out a M2 tune!

thanks &mdash 03/15/08 - 01:04:00 AM
so glad you liked this one. i'm pretty obsessed with 60's vox, so it comes out. as far as writing about exes, i write about everything. can't write a million songs about being a happily married father who goes to work and fixes things around the house. thanks a bunch for listening.

as the author &mdash 03/15/08 - 03:04:42 AM
of a novel called "exes" I can only relate to this. Il like the idea of being nice after all those years and regardless of what has happened at the time. Exes are not ennemies (if one is lucky). Downloaded.

thanks so much for checking this out. now you need to start writing a post-rock opera set around your novel. can't wait to hear it.

Another great song.... &mdash 03/15/08 - 03:25:24 AM
This is another great song Michael. I totally relate. I have many t-shirts and mugs in my possession, commemorating broken dreams. What we go through in life and as a part of growing up shouldn't have to happen to anyone.

The line 'I'll sag like a tenement tonight' really caught my attention. I know exactly what you mean.

The theory you have about making your songs makes the songs sound more 'real' and takes the 'studio' out of them, so they come across as less 'mechanical' and more human.

Keep 'em coming Michael.

Take care.

Paul

thanks Paul &mdash 03/16/08 - 01:20:52 PM
always happy to see you pop in to check out a track. like the t-shirts and mugs analogy. as far as sounding human goes: i just try and play up my good points and minimize the weaknesses. it's never going to be perfect so i just try and keep the vibe by doing everything fast (when a whole band plays a song there will always be someone making a mistake or not playing tight, that's what makes them sound like a band). thanks so much for listening.

At the beginning...... &mdash 03/16/08 - 12:19:06 PM
it reminded my of a "Double Fantasy" song. Upon further listening you are definitely showing a Lennon influence or T. Petty or both. Which you know I dig.

Not Indie. As far as the genre issue is concern.

Ooh ahhhhh

Cool.

Lovely &mdash 03/16/08 - 12:26:46 PM
.. laid back and straight up- very pro sounding .. and radio friendly too .. everything is 'just right' .. not too much .. not too little .. nice little catchy melodies .. but your singing is without doubt the star attraction .. great voice, effortless sounding.

Great chord progression in the chorus &mdash 03/17/08 - 06:43:12 PM
really like the subtle slip to minor or something like that (I'm just guessing here). You have a great knack for keeping it simple yet making it deep at the same time - similar to John Lennon in that way. BTW - your drum production keeps getting better all the time.

Love the guitar on this. Nice lyrics, lovely rolling rhythm, and great vocal performance. The words and music gel nicely and the bittersweet feeling resonates throughout. This is a great song, however easily you feel it might have come to you. Sometimes the magic just comes to you! Kudos, my friend. Peace.
