Song Description

thoughts about spring

Lyrics:
Vernal Equinox

recently i opened my eyes from a long hibernation
lolling lazily on my raft again
floating out from below a blue glacier
anticipating warmer waters, and golden skies

ecologies and geologies slip by on left and right
melt-off propels me into the promise of the delta

on a whim, i try to send a thought-wave your way
but the shimmering reflections show you will not hear

seven by seven times i've rolled down this growing river
the rapids toss my thoughts and tumble my convictions
the times of my failures flood onto the deck
yet the enormous cloudless sky above inspires me

a new day and i still haven't forgotten when you and i
shared this stream, laughing, planning our next landfall

it seemed eternal, yet it was not
but the memory endures

and beaching as the first day closes, reality fades

exhausted and drifting off to sleep
my thoughts review the swells and the rocks and the rapids
in my slumber i deny my fear, i dare the river
i continue my journey almost effortlessly

and through it all i hold tight
i hold tight to the first time i saw the southern cross
adrift in the current but still i feel safe
knowing i can rely on you

in the new spring flood
i feel a new rush in my veins
i'm back at the helm

i'm the navigator
i'm the captain

and everything is possible
again

i had fun picking out and modifying some GB loops for the background music.

it was a challenge to make the music fit the mood of the words.

thanks

Wow Bill - this is a beautiful listen. You're so good at spoken word backed by gorgeous music. The poetry touches my heart in every conceivable way - thanks!

the original poem had a bit more stuff in it, but i simplified it here.

i was definitely going for a hint of metaphor of life when i wrote the original version. i was vaguely writing it for someone i knew and loved many, many years ago.

thanks

Nice one Smoke &mdash 03/16/08 - 08:51:26 PM
I don't quite know why I like your spoken word stuff. Even though I am an announcer by trade, I am usually not impressed by spoken word stuff and am usually impressed most by people who have trained voices and whose styles are more ... well, stylized, like the vocal jazz artist Ken Nordine.

You, however, have such a genuine style and such a subtle, quite power in your overall presentation I become captivated by it.

Nice touches here with the phrases of the music starting and stopping with the phrases of the poem.

it's kind of hard to imagine a poem might have sections - but that's how i tried to approach this one. i actually wrote the poem about 3 years ago.

i tried to make a micro-movie out of this. i was little unsure about the long gaps between sections, but i think it works.

i have zero voice training. i'd like to pursue singing and speaking lessons, but i have no idea how to go about doing that. any hints?

thank you

for what it's worth, my fave line in this is:

"you will not hear"

Wow !! &mdash 03/18/08 - 12:43:11 AM

Hi Bill
this was very thought provoking and very moving as well.
I had visions of a slowly dying seaman, drifting on a lonely sea, half dead coming to life again after drifting in and out of consciousness.
I absolutely adore your spoken poetry,
You have a lovely way of expressing yourself so elequently too. the music was also put together perfect for the poem. Well done.
Peace Dee .

nice imagery there. it certainly is one way of interpreting it. (i firmly believe poems and lyrics can have multiple meanings)

guess i'll need to keep at the spoken word stuff, eh?

thanks!!!

this was theft.

i stole a poem from myself that i wrote 3 years ago, and then i stole some loops from an Apple JamPack. A little fine tuning, and it was done.

well, it took a little more work than just that, but i was pleased with the outcome. sounds like you liked it as well.

thank you
