Description:
Version 2, the Cheltenham Session with Rebsie Fairholm singing the vocals... as the song was meant to be sung. This version is in the key of A. Thank you Rebsie for sitting in with me and giving such a beautiful performance on this song!
Here is the ORIGINAL VERSION.
Vocals: Rebsie
Guitars: Jack
Lyrics:
Key of A: Capo on F# fret
G Em
Rising each morning, a muffin and tea by the window
G Em
Gazing outside at clouds drifting by
Am C G
Replaying memories of what could have been
Am C G
Sure of herself, sitting there without him.
___________
G Em
Walking to work, she pauses alone at the corner
G Em
Never a doubt, she always knows what to think
Am C G
Now as she stands there no longer- can she say
Am C G
Regrets her companions, steps off the curb on her way.
___________
Chorus:
C G Em Am
Never so lonely as she was that night
C G Em Am
Never so lonely, never so right
C G Em Am
Never so lonely as she was that night
C Am G
Never so lonely that night.
____________
G Em
Back at the flat, she reaches to open her mailbox
G Em
Hoping to find the letter that’s never there
Am C G
Telling herself no matter, it’s OK
Am C G
She hurries inside, closing the door on the day.
____________
G Em
Dimming the lamp by her bed, awake in the darkness
G Em
Thoughts of the emptiness since he’s been gone
Am C G
Wondering how it is she’ll carry on
Am C G
Re-assuring herself, she did nothing wrong

It's a good one, coach &mdash 03/15/08 - 12:40:22 PM
Excellent. I love the close-up, breathy British charm. Jack's original draft of the song had that feel to me, so Rebsie is a natural for for the song. This is a winner, a hit. One of those instances where you say, "Haven't I heard this on the radio?" It should be on the radio. We need to get back to this sort of evocation in Pop music.
Anyone else here fans of Petula Clark and Julie Andrews?

Additional thoughts &mdash 03/15/08 - 01:07:17 PM
In my humble estimation, the song needs a better mixdown. More ambience. Guitar is panned too much to the right, especially in the intro. Song needs to be more open, more resonant. Seems too "tight" or compressed. I think you were after an intimate feel in this version but I prefer a "live folk" sound. [ Reply to This ]
Very appreciative... &mdash 03/17/08 - 01:21:54 AM
of your words, Richard, as I'm sure Rebsie is. And the mix, of course, is always in play... thanks for the listen and you generous comments!

Endorsement &mdash 03/17/08 - 09:54:55 AM
I need to clarify what I said about ambience.
As mentioned above, the opening guitar is mostly right channel (had to jiggle my headphone jack to make sure the connection was true). But soon Jack spreads guitars to far right and left sides. Rebsie's close-up voice is in the middle and has purposely been left "dry" or unreverbed (which is usually my preference, mind you, for solo voice).
Now, when the refrain comes in, there is a very nice, very chilling spread of her harmonies and all seems well. That is the highlight of the song for me -- the refrains.
OK, here is the problem as I see it (and I seem to be alone in this). It's in the verses where you have dry voice dead center, and reverb-delayed guitars far left and far right. The three elements don't fit into the same soundspace. Also, the clarity of the guitar work is noticeably degraded. How do I know that? I heard a demo which Dadai which sent me which has much more clarity in the guitar work. Once you've heard that clarity, you miss it. I might suggest panning the guitars less. Also, dupe Reb's lead track, then lower the duped track volume by about 50-60% and add reverb and/or delay. OR, add reverb to the Global Track in GargageBand...but not before dialing down the reverb/delay in the guitars on their individual tracks.
Please accept this critique as a very positive endorsement of the song. It is close to being broadcast quality, once you unify the soundspace and clarify the guitars.
Maybe the problem (with me) is that I want to hear what this song would sound like as a live performance (coffee shop or big stage). [ Reply to This ]
Jim Bouchard... &mdash 03/17/08 - 11:15:35 AM
mentions some of the same points re: dry vocal, reverbed guitars, which I think is a good observation. I am not sure as to the "degraded" guitar tracks. That original demo was two different guitar takes of the Applause AE on two different tracks. All I did on this version was pan one original track that you heard (Applause electric acoustic) and added the Martin acoustic panned to the other side. I think you may be hearing some distortion that does come through a bit on the boomy bass sound in the Martin track. Something I discovered yesterday. So I am adjusting the settings to correct that.
The more ears listening and the more feedback the better. I do plan on tweaking this one to take into account yours and Jim's input. Thanks, Rich.

Art and Physics of Acoustics &mdash 03/17/08 - 12:21:41 PM
When you pan the guitar so far to the side, it loses its presence and resonance. Now I see Bouchard's comment. I had missed that. I have heard some Jimi Hendrix songs which have hard panning of guitar and other instruments to either side and they are a little annoying to listen to in head phones. Real world listening is not like that.
Having said all this, I am no expert. I am also trying to do the elusive "better mix". We are both limited by software, hardware, time and "Art and Physics of Acoustics" training. [ Reply to This ]

"and the harmonies on the chorus gave me a chill"
Adam, that is exactly what I felt when I heard the chorus after receiving all of Rebsie's vocals and mixing them in with the guitar. That alone made it worth doing this new version with her.

I'm a sucker &mdash 03/15/08 - 06:20:30 PM
A sucker for a Rebsie vocal, that is! This is really nice. Nuevo-folk, you might say. I think the mix does need some work at bringing things a bit more together. The guitars have a fair bit of reverb and the lead vocal is fairly dry. I like the dry vocal and think the guitars should have followed suit. It's a little thing, but it would sound a bit more finished that way. As it is, it's lovely nonetheless. [ Reply to This ]
Good observation... &mdash 03/17/08 - 11:24:12 AM
Jim, I will be taking your input into account as I play with the dials and knobs to further refine the recording. See my post above to Richard.
And I am with you... a sucker for Reb's vocals.

You and Rebsie please take a bow. I love this new version much better than the previous one I heard. It's a very simple song the is flush with meaning and feelings. Well play Jack, and I like it that you kept this one just the guitar. And Rebsie you singing on this was divinely inspired.
Thanks to both of you for a truly wonderful collaboration. Bravo

Jack and Rebsie - nice combo &mdash 03/28/08 - 05:41:54 PM
First and foremost, a beautiful vocal in Rebsie's inimmitable style - love the harmony sections in particular.
I'm with Jim and Richard on the mix - sometimes throwing the acoustics far right and left works (when there are more tracks to play with for example), but in this case I think you could have brought them both in more towards the centre. I've finally twigged that it is best in many circumstances not to reverb the individual tracks, but to add reverb to the output track only so there's a more consistent reverb across the song.
Songwriting from you is consistently good in this style Jack, and you certainly couldn't be criticised on your choice of collab partner.
Cheers,
