Keywords:
mandolin (42)
Description:
I recently was home sick with a nasty chest cold and was tinkering around with a cheap mandolin I had just bought (my first one - an Epiphone - plays surprisingly well for the pittance I paid for it). I wrote this ditty to cheer myself up while I recovered.

Lyrics:
maybe baby when the time is right
we'll leave together in the moonlit night
wash our hands of all the mess we'll leave behind

we'll sail together to the setting sun
make a melody and when we're done
we'll write a song about a brand new peace of mind

maybe baby when the ship comes in
we'll drink a bottle of bathtub gin
climb the ladder from the humdrum hole we're in
we'll wag a finger to the cosmic tune
sip the nectar from a silver spoon
and dance together as we watch our ship come in

holy moly, what a mess we're in
everything has got the stink of sin
we're really muddled in the mire that holds us here

but maybe baby if we get away
we'll make it better, we'll forget today
and raise a toast 'cause the coast is almost clear -
and so, my dear.....

maybe baby when the ship comes in
we'll drink a bottle of bathtub gin
take a breather from the awful mess we're in
we'll wag a finger to the cosmic tune
sip the nectar from a silver spoon
and dance together as we watch our ship come in

What a great song Brian &mdash 03/15/08 - 08:01:15 PM
This just reeks of that, "Baby it's gonna get better feeling" It's kinda like the Blues, in reverse. Reminds me of when you play a country song backwards, you get your wife and you pickup, and you best frind back the further into the song you go.

A happy, hopeful song Brian, played well on you new Mandolin, with a great backup band. Thanks for sharing this one, it is delightful.

Ed

Yo Ho &mdash 03/16/08 - 07:43:05 AM
Brian, you are the master of the catchy song. Really great lyrics that are extremely well thought out and your music and vocals are the best. On my third listen - already embedded in my brain and singing along. Yo Ho, Yo Ho.
You know I've downloaded and will treasure.
Cheers
Len

Wait- you wrote this when you were sick???? &mdash 03/18/08 - 04:32:48 PM
This is fantastic! I love this and can't stop listening to it. DL to my iTunes. Love your voice inflections in these lines, and the mando sounds as if you've been playing for years. Way cool song...:-)

Right on. &mdash 03/18/08 - 05:55:05 PM
Originality at its best. Every song you write has a life of its own. . .

You ever listen to Regina Spektor?

You remind me of her not so much in the tone of the music, but the complete originality of each song. Something I'm striving for every day!

Holy Ship! &mdash 04/18/08 - 08:27:14 PM
Holy Cowsills, is that vox clear and o-pitch! A touch of Loudon Wainright maybe? Amazing vision, which doesn't surprise me since I just listened to your song for Ronnie Lane. Killer lyrics, production... and so on. Nice Elvis/robt. Plant "bab-uh" you got there, too!

What a wonderful Song Brian &mdash 09/27/08 - 10:20:55 PM
All the flavor of and old sea ditty, but much better than any of the ones I remember. Great lyrics and excellent vocals m friend. Love the mandolin and when the chorus of "sailors" comes in it really gets going.

Fantastic job on this my friend

Thanks

Ed
