Description:
This adventure started a couple of weeks ago, when I discovered datafunk's song called 'Themes & Scores (Value Pack 2)'. I particularly liked the third theme in the song and I asked Fred if we could work it out as a collab project. No prob from his side...

To me, the theme sounded a bit oriental, and that's why I decided to also involve my Chinese friend Josie Tu (from my song 'Chocolates for Josie'), to speak some words in Mandarin. Concerning the lyrics, I also decided to stay on the Chinese side, and I found the legend of Chang E - a very ancient fairytale - as a base for the lyrics.

Well, working with Fred (datafunk) is such a lush... And I want to underline that this song is mainly his work. With every new e-mail, the song evolved into something... magic. And with Josie reading a poem on Chang E in Mandarin on top of it, the whole song became a fairytale on its own. She also provided the artwork.

This is one of the finest collab experiences I ever had. Thanks so much Fred for your great artistry. Thanks Josie for your mysterial magic. And thank you both for your true friendship.

-Walt

Lyrics:
Open the book
Read it out loud
My eyes are blind
Light's moving out
Tell me story
How it began
The yin and the yang
The moon and the sun

Ten stars up in the sky
Will blaze the earth
Shoot them with arrows
Show what you're worth
Climb on a mountain
Put on your crown
Claim you're the emperor, emperor

There's a lady on the moon
But there's no one who remembers
There's no one who remembers
There's a lady on the moon

Smiling and waving to
The farmers and the mothers
The fishermen, the ocean
White lady on the moon

Open your heart
Brake down a wall
Rise on your throne
Speak to them all
Make them your servants
Act like you're strong
Teach them the balance
Between right and wrong

Ten stars up in the sky
Will blaze the earth
Shoot them with arrows
Show what you're worth
Climb on a mountain
Put on your crown
Claim you're the emperor, emperor

There's a lady on the moon
But there's no one who remembers
There's no one who remembers
There's a lady on the moon

Smiling and waving to
The farmers and the mothers
The fishermen, the ocean
White lady on the moon

Wow .. &mdash 03/17/08 - 01:59:21 PM

.. electronica, indie, art-rock ;o) Excellent track Walter .. liked how is surges explosively with the drums and that bass the slides away off ... unmistakeable Walter vocal .. such rich timbre in your voice .. and a great performance .. love the melody for the hook "smiling and waving to .. " etc.

Not speaking much mandarin .. except the tinned variety ;o) .. those additions reminded me of that effect of annoucements at an airport terminal over a tannoy...which I actually liked.. despite it probably not being what you were after :o)

The arpeggiated pattern ending made me think of Visage's "Fade to grey" .. I think that's the second time I've thought of that in a comment recently .. pay no heed.

Quirky and captivating- I've listened to it over and over .. and it grows too, as a good song should.

Grand combinations Walter, Fred & Josie.

I immediately fell in love with that tune when I heard it on Fred's page. Especially the way it breaks open with the drum intro. Most of the credits go to Fred, no doubt about that. And I'm honoured he let me post it on my profile.
Yes, now that you mention it... I see what you mean with the sound of Josie's spoken words:-) To me it still adds mystery.
Thanks so much for lending your ear to it, Alan. Very very much appreciated.

ebbs and flows &mdash 03/17/08 - 02:13:17 PM
I really like the swelling nature of the music and the singing, it seems to come and go like the moon peeking out from the mists. The only thing I would have liked a little different was to have Josie's speaking part slightly more audible, even if still shrouded in effects, it seemed more like a sound effect than a voice here. Great slow build to the song, and wonderful piano lead-out. Enjoyed the lyrics and the chorus intro was really nice. Exquisite attention to detail througout, the music backing is very smoothly melted together like a velvety cradle holding your voice, really impressive work to all of you.

Drakonis

Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I didn't expect anything less from you:-) All I can say is that working with datafunk is a true pleasure. He's not only highly talented, but he's also a wonderful communicator, and a very patient guy (yeah, the vocalising took me quite a while...). Thanks again for popping in, Eduard... fellow singer:-)

I guess moorlandt is slowly evolving from a solo to a collab project. I'm just a lucky guy to be given the chance working with talented composers like Fred. Thanks for your sweet comment!

Ah, the Bowie comparison... from a singer with a voice as close to Bowie's as I've ever heard. What a compliment:-) Thanks a million, Vic. Always thrilled to see you popping in.

The Emperor &mdash 03/19/08 - 01:01:54 PM
It's always such a happy day when you give us a new song, Emperor Walter and this is up there with your best. Your ears did a good job when they found Fred's fantastic music and it was inspired to add Josie's vocals as well. I like the way they sound overall. Knowing they were Mandarin, I wanted to hear them more clearly, but I realized that if you hadn't said that, I would have just viewed them as a really cool vocal element in the mix and wouldn't have minded. So, I think they're actually very good as they are...it's not as though I speak any Mandarin. :-p

Your lyrics are so beautiful and what an eye for source material as well, though the poetry is yours, "ten stars up in the sky, will blaze the earth," is a line that's so vivid and that list of the people the lady on the moon waves to "the farmers and the mothers, the fishermen, the ocean" is so unexpected and wonderful.

I love the music and every element, in fact. Thank you for giving this to us.

Oooh, what a happy moment every time to read you comments. You have an exceptional ear. As I mentioned in previous comments on this page, this is most of all Fred's work. And I feel just like a happy chappy having discovered his basic track. Thanks so much again for spending your precious time on my page, Lisa... I'm on my way to yours now;-)

Cool &mdash 03/19/08 - 08:38:58 PM
I really like a lot of the elements to this...from what I can hear. It's peaking a lot. For most of the song it's consistently in the red. This causes a lot of the detail to get lost, and for something with so much detail, that seems to be a shame. Maybe I'm just not getting it, and the point with this type of music is to be sort of pushed to the max, and if that's the case, never mind me, I'm just sort of picky that way. Always great to hear your music!

Cool &mdash 03/20/08 - 12:57:17 PM
thanks for the feedback Jim. I'm concerned about that peaking issue, I had hard times mastering it and to tell the truth, I'm not 100% happy with the final mix I gave to Walter. But sometimes its kinda difficult for me to feel the right balance , my gears are not the world best, I'm doing my best. Gotta work on this though!

I was wondering ..... &mdash 03/21/08 - 01:48:43 AM
... when I would get my next Moorland Infusion ... and here it was waiting for me in my inbox for a couple days now ..... sigh .... so busy .... didn't even check my emails .... this was a whole new taste in my mouth (for Moorlandt) .... Luv how you desire to grow musically by taking on new challenges and collabs and NOT wanting to repeat the same thing too often .... I think its great ... often artists find their niche and then they stay there until they become stagnant and then scramble to get out of the rut ... but YOU "challenge taker" - keep moving forward and trying new things .... challenging yourself to reach new heights ... GREAT ! You are my kinda guy ! but you already know that ! p.s. luv the mandarin bits but echo what has been said .... would like to hear them spoken a little louder so they make a statement in the mix.

ooooh, lady goosebumps... I was missing your presence here;-) Diversity though has one big disadvantage: I never can give an answer when people ask me 'what genre of music do you make?'
About Josie's voice in the mix, I understand what you mean. Just take into account that the original recording was very low quality, as Josie doesn't have any fancy recording equipment, and just using the mic of her laptop. Not easy to make it sound crispy afterwards... I had more or less the same prob on my song 'Chocolates for Josie'.
Well, whatever... thanks a million again, lady, to pop in and giving it a listen. You're so welcome.

Dynamics and contrast... &mdash 03/25/08 - 09:11:06 PM
Oh my gosh, Moorlandt! This is terrific vocal work over such a rich and image-laden composition! I love the range of vocals you demonstrate here and they way you mixed it to create the dynamic contrast between the verse and the chorus. I have got to get something together for you to sing on! Bravo!

Lovely! &mdash 03/26/08 - 07:20:55 PM
Walt, this reminds me of the collabs I did with SilVer - the lush backing and your inimmitable vocal. The spoken words sound perfect and add an exotic touch. Fred's backing sounds great also. The crackle and hiss at the end, although I'm assuming it was there for a reason, didn't grab me much, but overall this was one very enjoyable song.
Cheers,
Neil
