woodstock (21)folk (351)
Description:
Richie Havens was hung up back stage waiting on his percussion people to arrive, so they pushed me out onto the stage for one song... as I looked out at everyone, well, it was quite a sight. A mass of humanity, mostly young, some yearning... hoping for something better. Others not sure what they were doing or where they were going... everyone a bit wasted... Well, I just starting playing my guitar, and this is the song that came out....

vocals, guitar: Jack

[special thanks to John Sebastian for sitting in with his harmonica] Photo is of John Sebastian at Woodstock.

Lyrics:
When will the sun of righteousness shine?
When will truth come to each and every man?
When will the wolf lay down with the lamb?
When will justice come to our land?

Refrain:
I hear the cry of the widow in the field
She's gleaning the sheaves from the reapers
Where is the one who will reach out his hand?
Who is the weak sister's keeper?

When will the hunger for goodness be filled?
When shall the meek find reward?
When shall the sad come into their joy?
Tell me now, when is the day of the Lord?

Refrain

I hear a song, I see a hope
I feel a love born of compassion
Now is the time of fullness therein
Every man his brother's companion
Everyone his brother's and sister's companion

I'm just glad to be in the line-up to perform here at the MJ Woodstock Concert. How did you get everyone up here to your farm, man?

Heheh... clean out a few cobwebs... stretch some of these tight ligaments... get out there on the stage. Hey Roxylee, thanks for the comments. Glad to know the song fit the feel of the MJ Woodstock concert. cheers.

Stay away from the red acid... bad stuff. In fact, just sit back and get high on the music... love is in the air and all that '69 vibe.

Thanks, Mark. I appreciate your nice comments.

Wow Jack - Richie should've stayed backstage while you did a whole set and THEN come out! This is SO Woodstock-y feeling. Great tune, great lyrics, GREAT vocals. Congrats!

Well, Richie got his act together and I had to go back to my day job... a roadie for CSN, not so bad for the times...
Thanks so much... it was fun!

How did you &mdash 03/18/08 - 08:21:00 AM
play the harp and sing at the same time Jack? Very impressive.

This really does fit in the time (and mood) frame and very well done indeed.

Cheers

Harp at same time.... &mdash 03/18/08 - 11:19:44 AM
hmmm, that is kind of hard to do, eh? So, I just remembered John Sebastian was sitting in on harmonica... heheh.
Maybe the times aren't a changing... still a yearning for a better day. Thanks, Len.

Wow Jack .. you should have been there, and the movie would have been a good bit better. You are really great in this fashion. I dig this. Keep on till your flatpick has made a hole in your guitar lid. You're gonna be soo good!

:-)

PS Seriosly I really like it!

Woot! &mdash 03/18/08 - 12:17:12 PM

.. it was a pleasure to be woken up in my tent (surrounded by promiscuity, of course ;o)) to the sound of this gem... despite my drug induced coma.

I love that 'ra ta ta ta' 'chucka chacka' train rhythmic strumming and your vocals are excellent too. Lyrics are good and in keeping with this nostalgic time-traveling experiment... darn it, I wasn't born until '70. *harumph* what did I miss? hehehe.

Hey I'm glad you liked the guitar 'chucka' strumming. That is what makes the song for me... although it is anything but flawless. I need to work on the fast rhythmic flat pick thing.

Born in '70? I started college that year.
You didn't miss much. :)

The spirit of Woodstock Lives ON &mdash 03/18/08 - 03:20:07 PM
Very cool track Jack. Hey, are you the famous "Jumpin' Jack Flash" they were all talking about. Could it be that all these many years later we finally find out the truth.

Love the overall feel of this, it's almost like being there and hearing it for the first time.

Way to go Jack.

Is a gas, gas, gas... &mdash 03/18/08 - 05:23:02 PM
I can't answer that question truthfully, so I'll just say, my name is Jack and occasionally life is a gas.

The overall feel... that is really what I was going for in this song. So maybe I got a little of it and it came through. Fun tune to play. Thanks, Ed.

Right on, right on &mdash 03/18/08 - 07:52:12 PM
From Deadeye "Goodstock" Millermeister sprang seven grandchildren who, years later, recounted the day Grampa took to the stage "front and center" at Woodstock 2008. All it took was one song. He was history.

Jack you did a great job here. I loved your performance at Woodstock. I was sitting in the very front screaming and staring in awe of your talents! :) Great lyrics, guitar and singing and the harmonica added such a nice touch. Super. Thanks for sharing.

I'm very impressed with the relaxed and confident way you sail through the vocal ... you sound like you're really in the zone and loving every moment of it. This is the best vocal I've heard you do, in fact.

Great stuff!

Great lyrics, Jack... Great neo-post-Woodstockian-Dylanistic-proto-Biblical kind of thing...

day one &mdash 03/19/08 - 10:39:50 PM
a nervous Jack takes the stage and feels the good vibes and sends the aural energy back to the pleased crowd.

And Wavy Gravy stands on the edge of the stage with a tear in his eye, or rumor has it he at a bad jalapeno.

nicely done and lively Jack!

AAAhhhh that's better! I missed this one at the festival, head over to hear the lyrics better and I'm happy to say you've struck a nerve. We keep tryin' and one of these days - if the earth doesn't fall like a souffle in the oven or maybe it does and still - it'll be a better place.

I meant to say (above) that I missed this during e-Woodstock, then saw the video you uploaded and THEN came back here to give it a good listen. (Wish I could just edit that above comment!) Thanks again for a good tune.

I'm quoting Doadars Uncle: "This is exactly your moment on stage!"

Wonderful!
