Description:
to continue the death tribute thyme my life long friend died last month. he played one night with the who when we were 19. you may have heard the story.

Lyrics:
start here at the airport
feels like im going blind
middle of the day in a dark bar
1000 miles away from peace of mind
im tring to remember
when i was a kid
did the sun set in my back yard
i think it did

what comes before and goes on after

long hair or short hair
but always intense
the only thing thats goint to suffer
is on the other side of the fence
its snowing in moline
every ones asleep
the planes waiting on the paddock
and a feeling starts to creep
somewhere over milwalkee
some tears escape my eye
rolls down my cheek
a little baby cries

what comes before and goes on after

i can see my father
a drink in his hand
sun setting behind him
on our acre of land
when we going to eat i ask
im only about ten
he looks at his glass and he says
two more inches

you should have the picture
of him rising from the dead
no order , no rhyme, no reason
it was everything he said
empty bed five feet up off the floor
im missing all the laughter
i just cant open that door
ill try to keep my family happy as spring hits the air

i can see my father
a drink in his hand
sun setting behind him
on our acre of land
when we going to eat i ask
im only about ten
he looks at his glass and he says
two more inches

Sorry to hear about your friend &mdash 03/25/08 - 07:25:10 AM
Great tribute to your friend. No better way than to express it through a song. Hang in there.

Life & Death As a... &mdash 03/25/08 - 10:48:04 AM
non-sequitur.

Sorry for your loss. The body count is quickly mounting in my life, as well, as friends and loved ones abruptly depart this plane. The realization comes that we have just moved up another inch in line on The Great Mandella.

Nope, never did hear The Who story, maybe you can repeat it here as part of your tribute. ;)

Sun shines on us but briefly..... &mdash 03/25/08 - 04:32:28 PM
Sorry about your loss Tim. Another great piece of music-poetry; I like the funky drums with brushes/ bass/piano/keys groove; like a airport lounge people coming and going; definitive transient soundtrack. Great job.

Take Care,

Joe

this is not just the blues... it's artwork. Wonderfully conceived, arranged and performed. You really painted a picture in words and music.... very very atmospheric and thought provoking. Loved it.... and sorry about your friend, regards M

Beautifully Unbalanced &mdash 03/26/08 - 01:24:42 AM
Too much going on to try and focus on any one element without multiple listenings, but I very much enjoyed all the little implanted voicings and various soundings throughout the piece on the first pass.Zappa meets Robertson meets Crimson meets Chicago blues and jazz and.........
Nice to meet ya'!
Whatever just happened here in my headset,I know I loved the whole disjointed journey I was just on.Thanks for sharing your 'condition'.Much enjoyed.

Hi Tim &mdash 03/26/08 - 01:36:33 AM
Sorry, I've been pretty tied up and not on the site much, so thanks for the heads up. This comes from a dark place - I love the vocal, it's so intimate, like a quiet conversation, almost slightly unhinged. The lyric is frankly fucking excellent, so evocative ' rising from the dead'.... this is like a mainline to your memories.

A really remarkable piece of work Tim.

amazing &mdash 03/26/08 - 02:15:34 PM
Just read your forum post and thats simply an incredible story. The stuff of dreams come true. Lyrically outstanding. The music carries just enough
edge and looseness to create a very fluid base. Love the little extras, voices etc...definitely worthy of multiple listens

Hi Tim &mdash 03/26/08 - 06:55:22 PM
This is a special song... a masterpiece really. There is a lot going on, but not in a way that's distracting... more like a painting that has so much fine detail you can't absorb it all in one viewing and every time you look at it again you notice something new.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your friend, Tim... it's never easy... and shouldn't be, I suppose. ~Adam

i remember this story &mdash 03/26/08 - 09:05:25 PM
i believe there is a clip in "The Kids Are Alright"

sorry of the situation, 4 in a year. I can relate to that very well.

cool and interesting tune as well.

Very eclectic approach... &mdash 04/18/08 - 02:32:07 PM
..but tastefully done Tim. It certainly conveys the sense of loss one feels at the passing of a loved one.

Moving....very moving.

Be well friend!

grappling with demons &mdash 05/06/08 - 11:44:21 AM
This dark song may have been prompted by returning home to attend the funeral of a friend, but it inexorably moves into a personal confrontation with the past (no doubt prompted by returning home) as it probes into the ramifications a father's alcoholism.

What works so startling here is how you use something so simple as the setting sun. We wonder why you are trying to remember whether it did or did not set in your back yard. But when you paint the image of Dad standing in the yard with a drink in his hand, framed by the setting sun, the hour getting late and everybody is getting hungry - and Dad says "two more inches," that's a knock-out blow of songwriting. Whew!

This is not an easy thing to write about. Who knows what events might trigger these abhorrent flashbacks? Who knows what kind of emotions are going to crawl out from under these rocks? I congratulate you for grappling with these demons - that's a brave enough thing to do, let alone sharing them with the music community.
