Description:
This is the FIRST song I ever did on GB. I had a crappy mic and no bass at the time. I found this the other day on my itunes.
Get this: One day when I got a bass, I went back to add a better bass line. The file totally crapped out, leaving me with only the bass line I laid down. Luckly, I had already converted the song to mp3. (The song was about 4GB!) I had no idea what I was doing at the time.

This is what I managed to salvage. Please forgive the production. Tell what you think of the "Song".

Enjoy,
Dave

Lyrics:
I’m so alive

There’s a place in this world
Where everything is beautiful

And I’m faced with another day
I try to figure out a way

So I go, like I’m told
Although I can’t be bought or sold

And I try to survive
Can’t lose hope when I’m alive

I’m alive…
I’m so alive…

There’s a place in outer space
Where everything is beautiful

Can’t hold back, don’t look back
Go with the flow and stay on track

All the things that I see
Don’t really mean much to me

I escape I don’t lose faith
You tell me lies I know are fake

I’m alive…
I’m so alive…

There’s a place in this universe
Where everything is beautiful

So I run against the wind
From the start until the end

Be alive if you try
All your dreams will come to life

Bring it on I’m not afraid
I have a choice to be made

I’m alive…
I’m so alive…

All the lights start fading now
Holding on to the ledge now
Dreams have told to obey now…

Crappy mic or not... &mdash 03/25/08 - 10:44:31 AM
This is a great song!

I'd love to hear you re-do it with all your new skills and tools! I think it would be killer!

A fav now for sure! I loved all the melodies working in it!

Very cool song, were the drums done in GB?? I am new to GB, and still need to get a midi controller keyboard.

GB drums &mdash 03/27/08 - 06:16:47 AM
I think the drums sucked on this one, but GB and Jampacks are really good generally. This is not the best example of GB drums. But, it's easy to use.

Billy Idol Angst &mdash 03/25/08 - 06:48:12 PM
Cool song, its epic in its current form, good lyrics yes the production could be better but it could always be better with 95% of the songs on MJ, so I will judge it on its songwriting and what you were going after, good good stuff!

TW Thanks &mdash 03/27/08 - 06:20:33 AM
Thanks for judging this based on the writing. I agree with you about your production comment.
Good man.

I've said it before &mdash 03/25/08 - 07:17:52 PM
and I'll say it again (Oh my God, I'm turning into my father...) - the song's the thing, and this is a prime example. I see what you mean about the production, and I could talk about the things that could sound better. But dude, this is a good song. It's anthemic and well arranged, the lyrics are cool, and there's some outstanding guitar on here. Do it again for your own satisfaction if you like, but this is cool as is. It would take more than a bum mic and the absence of a bass to smother your talent. Nicely done. Peace.

Love that &mdash 03/27/08 - 06:25:29 AM
I think we all get wrapped with the production aspect. But, it needs to be listenable, I must say that. I like to judge the song based on the writing, but I will definitely tip my hat to good production.
Thanks brother,
LL

It IS a great song &mdash 03/25/08 - 08:07:06 PM
and I love the production and arrangement. I wish it was louder though and wondered if you took it into Audacity and gave it a couple of times through the 'Amplify' thing. It sounds really good and worth a try or re-doing, regards M

If you make an........ &mdash 03/27/08 - 06:30:41 AM
offer, I just might call you on it. I remember liking this song, but I also remember disliking the production quality. I found this the other day and thought, what the hell, I'll throw it up here and see what ya'll think.

I'd love to re-do this one.

This is a really excellent song and I'd leave it as it is, very enjoyable.

Loving your voice and the arrangement on this one. Especially the Zeppelified mandolins(?). Great song here, Dave. Indeed worthy of a revisit.

Mandos are definitely influenced by Zep. Kind of a Zep IV vibe was what I was going for.
Glad you paid me a visit.

Great &mdash 03/27/08 - 11:58:10 AM
An epic song! The singing and instrumentation are out of this world. The mandolin and the elctric guitars are a great contrast. Maybe you should try and re-record this with your new gear but please leave this original version on line becuase the original often remains the best. A great song is always a great song regardless of how it's recorded.

Thanks

solid &mdash 03/27/08 - 01:38:05 PM
The vocals were good and angry. Also, maybe I haven't heard that many of your songs, but the guitar work on that solo was solid!

I appreciate your forum post about the song vs. the production. Not to take away from great production (lord only knows I wish I could do it), but great production on a poor song is nothing. Poor production on a good song, now you've still got a good song. Just my thought.

GB song its really good! it has some really great elements, and a lot of atmosphere. I agree on the production and I don't like the drum track. But the song itself is worthy. An updated version would be a killer!

Awesome tuneage my friend! Simply freakin awesome!

Great lyrics delivered with power and passion!

As for the production...I think it works. It gives the tune a bit of an early Moody Blues feel.

Be well man!
