Description:
A friend of my 17 year old daughter took his own life last week and was buried yesterday on the 24th. My heart breaks for his family and friends as he was only 18. I wrote this song a short time ago and was debating on whether to post it or not. Since this happened, it seemed appropriate. As a mom of two teenage daughters, I have realized that we don't always know what is going on in their minds. This hits home for me because I have had to deal with my own daughter questioning suicide. I would have never even thought those thoughts could enter her mind.
All I want to say is, Love your family, now.
All I want to say is, Love your family, now.
Lyrics:
Every day we take for grantedThe people in our lives
Do we take the time to notice
Do we take the time to care
Will we wake one day and they're gone away,
Life can be unfair
Hold them close, Hold them tight
Tell them everything will be alright
Now's the time, make things right
For tomorrow may not come
We don't know what tomorrow holds
We only have today....
Now's the time to hold a hand
It's the time to understand
Share your love, like no one else can
Tell them once, Tell them twice
Tell them three times that you love them
Hold them close, don't let go
Tell them that you're thinking of them
They need you, You need them
Don't let go
We dont know what tomorrow holds
We don't know
We only have today....today.

I appreciate your comments very much. My daughter is doing very well and I believe this experience, as painful as it is, also shows her a very different perspective that she needed to see.

Dearest Gail... a year ago we bought flowers for my daughter to lay at a bridge underpass near her high school, where a friend of hers was accidentally killed while walking back to school at lunch, by another student driving back to the same school. It touched all of us. These sudden tragedies hit us parents really hard, and it is so difficult to adequately explain to our children how much they mean to us. Thank you for sharing this important message... and playing/writing/singing it so beautifully, as you always do. You mean a great deal to your family too, remember that... and of course, you mean a lot to a friend over here too :-)
ttfn,
Eduard

This is a beautiful sentiment Gail.My heart brakes when I hear the enemy of our souls has claimed another victory. You are so right when you say we only have today.Sad so few come to realize it is only because God gave it to us that we do in fact have it.God help us and heal us!

Always good not to take anything for granted and at the same time not to take anything too serious, good to hear a song that fits the theme sonically as well as in a literary sense

I guess I'm stating the obvious, but this is a very special song. Not much else can be said about the song and your wonderful performance of it.
Technically, and it makes me feel sort of curmudgeonly to say it, I would have preferred a bit more volume on the vocals, since they sort of were hiding behind the wonderful piano playing. Other than that, this is marvelous. You sing so well!
gail60
I thank you for your kind comments about the performance and I agree with you about the volumes. I was so spent when I finally decided to post it that I did not take the time to go back and fix it. Thanks so much for liking the song. I really appreciate it.

Just beautiful: your singing, the piano and arrangement, the composition, the lyrics. When a song comes so much from the heart as yours does, it cannot fail to touch all who hear it. That's the power of music...and the power of love. I am so glad you shared both here.
Peace.
Paul
gail60

.. and fantastic playing and moving vocals. Your delicate touch on the keys is always just wonderful to listen to Gail and extremely apt in this context.
My deepest sympathies to his family and friends at this difficult and painful time.
.. a sadly often painfully forgotten piece of advise .. that hits hard when someone dear to us is no longer with us, leaving those close often with extremely difficult feelings of regret or guilt... wether justified or not.
Again, my deepest sympathies and condolences, very sad to hear such news.

How this got to me! My daughter tells me about her friends; some keep saying they want to die, some cut themselves, some openly hate their parents and want to kill them. It's an epidemic among the youth; this obsession with death and dying. Thank you for posting this reminder to love, to really listen, and to communicate with our teenagers. It really touched my heart.
gail60
I agree with you about the difficult situation we face as moms with teens. It is incredible how much pressure they face on a daily basis and honestly just plain scary! I appreciate you coming by to listen and am glad you were touched by the song. Good luck with your daughter and children. I pray we both are fortunate enough to never have to face this.
ceilidh

not in this manner but as a parent I can speak first hand about the loss of a child... there just isn't a worse pain you can experience. That said, your song contains what I think is very possibly the most important message... how important it is to embrace life and our loved ones at every opportunity.
Beautifully done, Gail. Beautifully done.
gail60
I am so sorry for your loss as well. There are just no words...I am grateful that you listened and appreciated the message. We only get one chance. Thanks so much for your compliments and the listen. Peace and long life!
Alannah
... we could impart the most important message of all to young people ... that things change .... times pass .... for those of us who have lived long past those angst ridden teenage years to grow up ... get married .. have children .... meet many many many diverse people, etc. etc. we recognize how fast and rapid our lives change ... some good stuff ... some bad stuff ... some bumpy roads ... but MAN what a ride ... and for those who get off before it has left the tracks they miss out on one heck of a time! Lovely heartfelt song Gail to express such a sad event.
gail60
I agree with you 100%. I wish we could make a difference to someone to think twice before making such a terrible decision. There is always hope, no matter how dim things may be. Thanks for listening to my song and I appreciate your comments very much.
Leon
Gail, this song gave me goosebumps, and I rarely say that about songs. Maybe because the message strikes close to home. My sister's best friend commited suicide at the age of 18, too, and it was something that we never saw coming. She was affable, amiable, at least normal-appearing on the outside. We never knew that there was a lot of sadness and suffering in the inside, and she did not find the way to vent her feelins and find help, not even from her best friend. Depression is a disease the steals the soul and sanity, and we need to recognize that in people who suffer from it, to affirm our love and encourage them to live.
You sang it with such a passion and with such a strong message, and I am sure everyone who has heard or experienced the sorrow of death from someone's suicide will feel this song strum the deep cords of his heart.
gail60
I really appreciate your visit and comments. Praise coming from you means alot to me for I admire your work so much!! You are just so talented! Thanks so much, I am glad you liked the song.
In all seriousness, Suicide is such a terrible waste. I just cannot imagine that kind of pain and it is so sad for those suffering from it. I do hope your sister is healing from her loss as well. Peace.
SJB
It is shocking that most people know of someone has felt the need to take their own lives for whatever reason. I think you've summed up what these tragic people might have needed in your hauntingly beautiful song.
gail60
I really am glad you stopped by. I appreciate the kind words for this song. It is hard dealing with such a difficult part of life for some. It is unbelievable to me that it is happening more and more all the time. Remember to Love your people...keep em close :)

I know sometimes you can't always hold them, but as much love as you can give them sure helps and if your lucky enough to hold them that is a real plus.
Enjoyed the tune, I am amazed how you really have that Roberta Flack style though certainly of course your own but you have a high quality vocal sound.
Plus it sure doesn't hurt to have a great song like this as well.
Way to Go!
gail60
Aww you are always so nice to me. You make me smile with each visit and I am so grateful to you for your support. I am glad you like this song. My daughter is doing very well now and I praise God for that. We are indeed blessed with two strong girls that have hearts of gold. We are a little protective and it is hard not to worry about them, regardless of their age. I am glad you liked this song. It was a hard time to go through, but you know, it is so true how we just don't pay enough attention to the very simplest things....We are so ungrateful sometimes. I am talking about me of course too. Sorry did not mean to preach. Yeman I respect your opinion and appreciate you very much. All the best to you. Thanks!!!

even 7 months later! A favorite that I had to go and listen to again!
