Description:
Is that guitar out of time? Yup. Is that guitar peaking like a emmer effer? Yup. What the hell are you saying? Yup. Is this recorded on your Tascam 4-track? Yup.
Even though this is supposed to be a mac thing, I thought I'd break a rule. I'm a loner, Dottie... a rebel.
This was written and recorded in the fall of 2003. I'm actually trying to blatantly rip off Frank Black. Not so much the Pixies, but solo. Headache in particular. This version is nonsense without the bass and drums, which really make headache a top tune. But even with them this is not at all like a Frank Black tune. But I like the way it turned out anyway. It's a mess and it's great like that. I was getting married in October and I had a backlog of dozens of songs that needed recording because I knew I wouldn't have the time... and I was right. So the frantic recording sessions gave me this... Fat Francess being an "clever" misnomer for Black Francis. I'm also drawing on Kellogg's Corn Flakes commercials for lyrical inspiration.
Lyrics:
Fat Francess © 2003
You've got me waking up at night
And I'm not so sure I like that
But I can't make up my mind
I think it's just some nervous habit.
So I'm sure it won't do me no harm
I just can't up and grab it, no no
Why must you always be this broken
You got a problem and you make it mine
Everything crashes, as high as you're hoping
But I ain't gonna be the one to crash this time.
Fat Francess and me together again for the first time
Fat Francess and me together again.
Looks like you got me fired up now
And nothing's gonna cool me down
No matter how hard you try
Looks like you got me fired up now
And nothing's gonna cool me down
No matter how hard you try

Fat Francess... well, doesn't really exist. He/she could be 5. This comes from a time in my life where I really just explored how much of a social retard I was. I have also been very guilty at times of just trying to write lyrics that sound interesting. This song, unfortunately, dabbles in that. There is a fourth verse that I forget during the recording and just repeat the 3rd. It doesn't offer much more insight though :). [ Reply to This ]

Always dug him. And I dig this one, too. You have a great pop sensibility. I think when everything calms down with your new born, we're going to hear even better stuff from you.
I would be proud of this song, brother. Old school.

hello &mdash 03/27/08 - 01:31:47 PM
There's no school like the old school! Thanks for your comments. Things are already starting to calm down. The music room became a staging area for random things these past few weeks but it's only my list (I literally have one) to be cleaned out and set back up. I hope to have some new stuff up soon. love this to death. i will not get rid of my tascam for all of the tea in china. i think this is a great song, and i disagree about it being nonsense without a rhythm section. it's right at home in half of my record collection. vibe is perfect and it's such a cool tune. excellent. [ Reply to This ]

I know what you mean about the 4-track. The only reason I own a Mac now is because I went to buy tapes for it and they Guitar Center guy looked at me like I was nuts. I guess you can special order them, but that's too much hassle for me.
I'm glad you came and checked out the song and that you liked it. I may have said this before, but you've got some great songs on your end so I'll take it as a huge honor. Thanks! [ Reply to This ]
cool stuff &mdash 03/28/08 - 05:53:25 PM
Nice song, just as it is. It's sort of compressed sounding with that natural compression from cassette tape. I think the pace sounds a bit rushed but then if you had a bunch of songs to record maybe you were in a hurry. Great guitar sound, nice and crunchy! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Jim &mdash 03/28/08 - 05:59:46 PM
Glad you stopped by. I do have a tendency to rush things so that's very possible. One day I'd like to re-record all the songs I did before now that I have more possibilities. Perhaps I'll try easing off slightly. Thanks for the comments! [ Reply to This ]
Nice sound. &mdash 03/29/08 - 01:43:40 PM

Singing is the area I'm most self conscious in so thanks for the compliment. Glad you liked the song! [ Reply to This ]
Nice one &mdash 04/06/08 - 02:07:42 PM
I get what you mean about the sound, but the song is good and that's what it's all about (in my humble opinion!). I like the lyrics and that muscular guitar playing works very well. I think Frank Black would love this! Nicely done. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

You have my admiration for your songwriting and arrangement. Like you I'm not big on fake drums (but begrudgingly use them when I hear drums but don't have a collab-er). You have something to say musically and lyrically, and that's the point. [ Reply to This ]
Drum Machine? &mdash 04/10/08 - 11:56:03 AM
Thanks, Bob. I have specific drum patterns in mind when I write a song and loops just don't cut it. I can build them using my keyboard in Midi but that always takes FOREVER and I can never really get the feel down. Thanks for the compliments! [ Reply to This ]

hmm &mdash 04/10/08 - 07:18:39 PM
You're either talking about a weiner dog or a bassett hound. Either way, AWESOME. I like to think that I'm working for no one but the weiner dog man. Thanks for the listen and the compliment. Oh yes, that is my hand and my son's foot. [ Reply to This ]
