Description:
LIOLI 7 Entry, 4/08 (loop it or loose it)
http://macjams.com/artist/LIOLI7

Sloppy as hell, but it's done (thankfully). I waited til the last minute to do the finishing touches, only to realize I wasn't even close to being done. Oh well - Doc *did* use words like bare-knuckle, abandoned warehouse and stone-cold :-D (selective hearing maybe? :-)

In an attempt to keep the loop somewhat intact, I left most of it as-is and just dropped it down to a D# - C# progression, then jumping up to the G occasionally. That lonely little B note in the original Gm was bugging me, so turning it into a G note (in a D# chord) made it legit. The problem with that, is the D#-C# progression sounds bad (instead of the original Gm-F), but it's so muddy you can't really hear the C#.

I chopped it into one note per measure during the "verses" with some echo. Then I threw in another obscure loop for good measure (and to help match the sound to the song title :-D I skipped building a midi bass line since the chords were low enough to fatten the bottom end, plus the midi base sounded horrific with it.

So now I finally have something posted after joining MJ three months ago.

Thanks for the comments! newbies were asked to post a few days early because of the screening delay for the first upload. I posted at 1:30 AM 3/28 and here it is already. And here i was worried it wouldnt make it by monday!

almost kind of reminds me of Primus. i like what you did with it a lot. how did you change the pitch on the audio sample? are you using an actual sampler? second question: is that you shredding? if so, very impressive.

[ Reply to This ]
Primus? hmm &mdash 03/28/08 - 04:40:50 PM
Thanks M2. I love primus, though I never thought of them as an influence. I used GB3 to edit the loop. Changed pitch to -4, used the "split" command to slice it up. I d'loaded audacity to create the MP3, but it was too late to learn it and use it for loop edits. That's me playing, tho I hadn't considered myself a shredder... maybe smoke and mirrors at best? :-) Thanks again for the comments!

First post? Amazing! &mdash 03/28/08 - 06:40:46 PM
You are killing that Strat and your machinations with the loop are inspired. Now that the lid's off we all better look out. Really enjoyed this.

"look out?" lol.... &mdash 03/29/08 - 05:33:27 PM
Thanks Bud. Highly doubt anyone has to look out tho :-) LOT's of talent far beyond my level around here!

What a way &mdash 03/28/08 - 06:46:29 PM
to lift the curtain. Like Bud said, what a first post. You have a good and twisted sense of composition too: echoing child's laughter and enough distortion to make one's gums bleed.

Thanks,
-g

thanks greg! &mdash 03/29/08 - 05:53:20 PM
Hmmm, that distortion thang. I guess it worked out ok, but it wasn't always THAT distorted.

I put the basics down right out of the gate a few weeks ago, let it sit, then popped a string right before I tried to clean-up before deadline. Replaced the set and couldn't kill that hairy sound (lowering the gain killed the sustain). Love my D'Addario strings, but I wish I could find a way to get a two week break-in done in an hour. Strings seem to be extremely touchy when recording direct.

Thanks for the feedback!

Briiliant rock tune !!! &mdash 03/28/08 - 06:57:25 PM
Hi

You have certainly got one hell of a good rock sound here and thats a fact.
The childs giggling with delight funny enough fits perfect and the pic would go perfect also on my song called Smile Beautiful Pic and mix
Well done. Cheers

Peace Dee.

glad you enjoyed.. &mdash 03/29/08 - 06:19:50 PM
..and thanks for the very nice comments Dee.

You're welcome to the pic as is (it's not mine), or if you want the unmodified original, just go to gettyimages.com, and type: brat baby (hope I didn't incriminate myself even tho it's used in a not-for-profit manner :-D I darkened it a bit to grunge it up and added the hands from other pics. Or if you want it with the hands and without the Doc, let me know and I'll be happy to send it to you.

Thanks again for the comments!

Nice use of the loop &mdash 03/28/08 - 08:12:20 PM
As intact as it is, it really sounds good here. A good lesson to others on how to use loops, even kind of ugly ones, as a jumping off point to achieve the sound and effect you want and one that works for the song.

Oh he's gonna hate this one for sure &mdash 03/28/08 - 08:28:43 PM
It's got the same kind of evil sound he gave us, but it's out of phase with his reality. This ones gonna hurt him to the core.

Way to go Willy, great job man.

Legit chops &mdash 03/28/08 - 11:56:32 PM
NIce modes across the guitar! That's something I just can't get a handle on. Once I start playing pentatonic I can't reverse my brain out of it.

[ Reply to This ]
ahh that mode thang.. &mdash 03/29/08 - 07:55:34 PM
...thanks chikoppi, I know what you mean about getting stuck in the pentatonic. As a youngin, I was a pure pentatonic jammer, even forcing them when they didn't fit cuz it was all I knew.

After recently getting back into playing, my fingers still aren't moving like they used to. So now I've been re-teaching myself from the ground up the way I should have learned in the first place. I'm working on both technique and theory, and so I've really been studying up on the modes lately.

Part of the reason for dropping the loop to a D#, is that I was trying to get a dreamy lydian-type thing out of the Gm key. And even though I sorta began the end solo in a lydian, I still eventually ended up dipping back into the pentatonic.

Thanks again for the comments!

Awesome guitar work .....nice fit in on the loop . Love your song . Baby laugh is so inocent yet creepy at the same time .

[ Reply to This ]
hah! &mdash 03/29/08 - 08:07:51 PM
...I wasn't looking for a creepy baby laugh, just bratty and cute. But once I got going, I can't deny there was a little Stephen King/Pet Sematary influence seeping in during the process ;-)

unsane loop &mdash 03/29/08 - 06:17:41 AM
man, this is an impressive work with the guitars... and this child screamings... very spooky I found! very nice first post, welcome!

thanks datafunk! &mdash 03/29/08 - 08:13:28 PM
hehe..like I told Dj, it didn't start out that way with the kiddy spookiness. But I guess it ended up with a little Stephen King influence. There's something naturally eerie about laughing little kids when combined with some reverb/echo.

Thanks for the comments!

giggle snort! You buried that atrocity of a loop so far down in the bedRock, it can't see the light of daze. Cool rocker.

I like the way you altered the loop - a big improvement! Some very cool guitar playing here too. You have a good sound there, too. Very nicely done. Welcome to the neighborhood. Looking forward to hearing more of your music. Peace.

...very much appreciate the comment from you. By chance, you were one of the first MJ'ers I listened too. After listening to you and a few other MJ'ers, I figured this place was a pretty cool place to hang out. Thanks again for the comment and the welcome!

Well arranged esp since you played the guitar along with it. Very good, I like all the elements esp the arrangement. Welcome to MacJams and for saving MacJam City.

Thanks Diviner.. &mdash 03/29/08 - 09:36:21 PM
...arrangement is a tedious process for me, but at the same time, the most fun and most rewarding. But I suppose it's tedious for anyone doing this by their self. It takes a lot of drive to maintain the interest/creative energy all the way to the finish line. Thanks again for the comment and thanks for the welcome!

Calling Stephen King &mdash 03/30/08 - 08:27:22 PM
...definately a scary vibe going when you pair up a child laughing with solid, smoking guitar work ricochetting off the anvil.

First post? This is one hell of an entrance! Incredible work with a crappy loop; you take over the thing and walk it down main street like a trained dog. Doc Lioli lived in fear of stuff like this, and with good reason!

Welcome to MacJams - and welcome to Loop It Or Lose It! You looped... Doc Lioli lost!

Awsome guitar work, you go nicely in and out (when you hit a wrong note, its the next note that determines whether it was good or bad -miles davis) i like the laughing baby. kudos.
