Description:
I have been experimenting for a couple of weeks on this piece. I was inspired to try a orchestral piece after hearing some of the submissions here at MacJams - so this is my first try. It is still rough and not complete. I have a lot more work to do on the overall mix and a few of the instruments. But I wanted to post it hear to; a) get some feedback and b)force myself to work on it long enough to get it to this point.

All comments are appreciated. Thanks for listening

I like it &mdash 03/28/08 - 01:04:03 PM
The only thing I can say it's the drums sounds too far away in the back of the song but maybe you want it like that.... For me it's a very good composition but I had put the drums more in front. Very nice post.

I am still working on the mix and there are a few things yet to add. I will take another listen to the drum level.
Thanks for you comment

I really love the sound of this. Amazing actually. You are so darn talented!! Very soothing and just so pretty. Personally, I would leave it alone. You did an awesome job! This will now be one of my personal favorites.

Outstanding musicianship &mdash 03/28/08 - 04:36:01 PM
Your formidable chops as a pianist are on display here, and in this case so are you strong orchestrating skills. The frequency spectrum is utilized nicely in this piece. The flow from start to finish is smooth and dynamic.

I think you gave each voice its correct space. Had this not been an orchestral piece, had it been one that was more in the traditional pop vein, I might have mixed the drums (great track, by the way) up in the mix, but in the context of this genre, I think the level of the drums works well, driving the rhythm, but not getting in the way of all else going on.

This is outstanding, Kayle, like the rest of your music.

This is totally new space for me - I really stepped out of my comfort zone on this one and I am so glad that it is deserving of such high praise from you and the others on this site. I really respect your opinion find your work outstanding as well.

Thanks for the comments. I am going to try and tweak it a little more over the next week or so. I will post the revised file if it turns out better than this.

Thanks again -

Kayle

New Age winterscape &mdash 04/01/08 - 11:04:58 AM
Makes me think of the winter games, Chariots of Fire, crystalline purity, of flying. Wonderful New Age track. New Age music like this needs to be precise, perfect, light yet layered, and you nailed the feel. Except there is a moment right at the end where the piano seems to falter, at 2:20, again at 3:02; at 5:00; consider fixing that. And I'd have faded the left hand of the outro, separating out the right hand at the end slightly, to make it lighter (left hand gets slightly pondering). Also, when using MIDI trumpets, it is sometimes good to layer separately played and slightly imprecise tracks (don't cut and paste) and to add a vibrato at the end of a note or two to give it a human feel. Excellent track.

This is a new area for me and I have learned a ton from comments like these and from experimenting. I will take another listen to the areas you commented on.

Just listened again &mdash 05/07/08 - 07:18:27 AM
and I can hear what you are saying about the outro - very good suggestion, thanks. I didn't think about how heavy the left hand is in that section.

Great orchestration! &mdash 04/17/08 - 11:36:27 PM
I really like your use of the woodwinds - reminds me of Incantations period Mike Oldfield. To be honest I like the piece most before the drums come in - because it's more dynamic. I think you are a natural orchestrator and I'd like to talk more after I post my classical stuff (my stuff on here so far being alt-rock!)

...and just realized that I had heard some of your work (sorry!). Look forward to more dialogue about orchestration.

Clarity &mdash 05/06/08 - 09:00:54 PM
Kayle, I am impressed with this track. Reminds me of the soundtrack to "Kramer Vs. Kramer." The clarity of the piano when it enters is quite a nice contrast to the busy (but very nice) string parts.

You've really got some composing chops, Kayle. Yes, I think you were right to submit this under "Film Scores." The orchestral parts, and their performances, are some of the best I've heard on MacJams. This is just a super track.

OK, now I hear the 'rock' section. This is really great! Reminds me of Mannheim Steamroller.

Is the piano Akoustik Piano? It sounds very good.

This must have taken a ton of time to complete.

Kayle, I have really enjoyed this one.

John

Thanks John - &mdash 05/07/08 - 07:11:23 AM
It is Akoustik Piano, but I can't say that I am really happy with the program. I find it very hard to find a sound that I like, and that sounds true to the piano I am looking for. In fact, I am looking into other software pianos to replace it.

This tune was really a labor of love for me. I didn't know much about orchestration when I started out with this and I posted it on another board I work with and received a ton of great suggestions and tips. And this was the final result. I had to put it down to work on other things, and I still think there are ways to improve on it, but I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

Thanks for you nice comments.

Curtain Call &mdash 07/13/08 - 09:10:43 PM
Wow. Just found this gem. An amazing piece of work. Your use of the orchestral instruments is great. I love the transition into the more Poppy part when the drums come in. Beautiful sound out of those staccato strings in the beginning and great piano! I look forward to hearing more of your stuff. This is excellent work!

Good Grief Kayle - this is INCREDIBLE!! If this is "rough and not complete" - I can't wait to hear something you think is finished! Your build here is exquisite, each instrument keeps it's voice, can be heard, adds (as opposed to the "kitchen sink" strategy, which muddies everything up - my downfall). The piano playing in here is just striking. I'm so glad you told me about this, and I'm anxious to hear more of what you can do. This is just TERRIFIC!

Thanks Karen &mdash 07/28/08 - 09:22:54 AM
Your tracks were the impetus that got me thinking about doing some orchestral writing. It means a lot to me that you liked this track. I am working on some new stuff to post again soon.

Thanks again -

Kayle
