Description:
The Riff
After I imported the guitar riff into a new Logic file, I realized that I couldn't do anything with this terrible soundbite. That is, until I found it made a wonderful monotone synthesizer after I patched through a tape delay. Thus, the loop became a synth. I don't recommend doing this regularly though, glaciers move faster than I did while programming the melody of that guitar loop/synth.
The Story
Speaking of glaciers, my girlfriend and I went to the La Brea Tarpits a couple months ago, and it totally blew my mind: all the tar and dead animals and science and stuff. Consequently, I've been threatening to name our future children after the Latin classifications of the Ice Age animals at the Tarpits: Smilodon, Camelops Hesternus, etc. She hasn't warmed up to the idea yet, so I've taken one of the names myself. Perhaps she'll see how wonderful it really is and change her mind.
Now, you may wonder, "what do the Ice Age or the La Brea Tarpits have to do with LIOLI7?" Nothing necessarily. It's music, feel it out.
At any rate, I'm here to say that extinction is for quitters. Take that Dr. LIOLI!

cool soundz &mdash 03/28/08 - 05:44:51 PM
really like that sound in there that sounds like flipping the 10 Hz dial on a wave generator.
ah! there's the loop. whoa, what happened to it? LOL

"Whoa, what happened to it?" &mdash 03/28/08 - 07:11:56 PM
Repeated assault and battery with a tape delay. It's the only excuse and explanation I can give. [ Reply to This ]
This is really cool &mdash 03/28/08 - 06:46:14 PM
I'm trying to follow your logic and hear the loop as synth - is it the long melody line in the midrange? I caught a tortured taste of the actual loop in the middle there - but that's not what you're talking about. Anyhow - this is another one of your fun filled dueling tempo numbers. [ Reply to This ]
It's right there . . . &mdash 03/28/08 - 07:15:26 PM
clever disguised as the squirelly distortion at the start, and then the high-pitched feedback note that turns into the actual riff in the B-section, then back into the frequency modulated feedback. It's all just the 80s Rock Guitar 01 run through an overworked tape delay. Nothing else.

Cool title &mdash 03/28/08 - 08:22:15 PM
Your kids will hate you until they grow up ... then they may embrace the names. Especially if you leave a song behind with their names in it. [ Reply to This ]
I'm telling . . . &mdash 04/03/08 - 08:28:43 PM
my girlfriend that I have supporters now. The movement is beginning! Ha ha ha!
Thanks for listening, by the way.

even a musician can learn to spell Camel, or at the very least learn to smoke one.
Awesome use of the track Greg, it's even almost recognizable in there somewhere, without being so offensive.
Thanks man

Nifty! &mdash 03/29/08 - 01:16:15 AM
Nice squeeze and squish work that creates something completely new from the raw input. Very cool tune as well! I love the legato synth that runs throughout as well as the liberal use of shaping envelopes. Great blend of sounds and details. Really good mix! [ Reply to This ]

I can't really compare . . . &mdash 03/29/08 - 06:09:16 PM
wine coolers with the tarpits. They both sound like a lot of fun, but totally different.
At any rate, check 'em out if you drive by again. They're a good day of nerdification.
Thanks for listening.

reminds me of Aphex Twin and Black Dog and other experiemental techno bands and labels. Very cool track.
P.s. Love the idea of your children being called Smilidon etc. Very funny. [ Reply to This ]

.. coming from a lost dimension. I feel like I should be sitting back in a dimly-lit basement, brain buzzing on something interesting and watching Rocket Robin Hood with the audio off and this on instead, playing loud.
Very twisted. Very cool. Dr Lioli had no idea what he was in for! [ Reply to This ]
Mellow &mdash 03/30/08 - 08:24:30 PM
Amazing mellowing of the seemingly untamable loop. Love your synth work.
Thanks

I'm glad . . . &mdash 04/03/08 - 08:31:18 PM
it works for you. Like I said, it's not exactly practical, but it does sound nifty. And there's quite a collection of tones that tape delay can squeeze out of a sample when the frequency envelope is restricted to a single frequency.
Thanks for (always) listening,

Ice Age Groovy &mdash 04/01/08 - 09:34:24 PM
I just love this on a stick! I'm going to be very near the La Brea Tarpits in a few weeks when I visit LACMA and I'm going to stand next to a bubbly pit of tar and gaze at it through a chain link fence with this playing on my iPod. That will be VERY satisfying.
I think your first daughter should absolutely be Smilodon. In fact, if I'd thought of it, I would have done it already.
I really think this is so fabulous, C.H. You went in such a surprising direction with it. How you got to such a sweet, gentle song with qualities of a lullaby from The Loop, is pretty amazing. I've listened to it four times already and I can think of all kinds of situations in which it will become an audio enhancement. Sometimes when I'm waiting, I put on music and watch the world and pretend it's a movie, so this will make a good soundtrack. [ Reply to This ]
Soundtrack for life . . . &mdash 04/02/08 - 11:17:20 AM
wow. Thanks for such high marks. All I can say is, "Much obliged to be your soundtrack."
Enjoy the LACMA and tarpits, by the way. Very cool all the way around, and if that Modern California Artists exhibit is still at the LACMA, say hello to the big reflective panel of glass for me.
