Description:
In working with the loop for this challenge, I ended up with three songs, though this is the one I chose to represent my entry in the contest.

I knew I couldn't use the loop straightforward as it was, so like others here, I took it and radically modified it.
First I turned it backwards, then altered the pitch and speed of it, finally putting it through KT Granulator in about 15 different effects of the same loop.

This piece uses 4 of those loops--the main one as an underlying rhythm track. All sound very industrial/mechanical, which became the basis of my approach to each composition in the series "Industrielle."

This song was further influenced by the opening of a photo exhibit of industrial photographs in the dismantling of a steel mill. I was amazed at the composition and form and play of light in the photographs featured, and the way the artist described it in his lecture on the exhibit.

While this probably means more to me in relation to my reaction to the exhibit and the photographs therein, I hope you'll enjoy this entry into the LIOLI7 challenge :)

I've put it under the genre Experimental, because I have no idea what genre it is...!

Thank you, Bryn, for listens and your ongoing support :)

Deep and scary but in the same-time beautiful done.. Kudos.
I love this LIOLI thing :)

ooh....scary! &mdash 03/30/08 - 11:23:31 AM
I'm always interested in hearing how people respond to music.
"Scary" was unexpected, but I can see how the sounds of dark, churning machinery could create that atmosphere.
Thank you for dropping by and leaving a comment :)

Wow - way to transform evil into good! I listened to the original loop and my mind went scarily blank - my thinking is way too linear. I'm amazed by the sheer genius, not to mention courage, of all the MJ'ers who've worked with this. This one is particularly compelling - you have indeed created good from evil - what an accomplishment - congratulations mysti! (cool ending!)

it's funny... &mdash 03/30/08 - 11:29:33 AM
...but my mind went blank when I listened to the original loop as well. The only way I could 'hear' it in something was to transform it into something else, and then I started to hear the possibilities.

Thank you for the kind words--and I agree; this challenge has been a lot of fun both to participate in, and to listen to the songs that have come out of it.

Superb!!!! :) &mdash 03/29/08 - 11:05:28 AM
This is a cool metaphor to go with your music and the pic! It is a sweet sublime story .......I love the reference to the similarity of looks... the pic even looks like the loop would look if it was in matter. I love the touch you have with your vox and the name of the song...."industrielle" he he with all that light and soft vox, Dr. Lioli will be put in a spell and fall piecefully asleep on the cement floor!!! :)*

Ah the heart of the machine, &mdash 03/29/08 - 12:12:43 PM
comes to light at last. It's like you gave life to the machines we all see, but generally ignore. A very well done piece that flows from beginning to end. Excellent work with the loop and the sounds you used with it, and the great production.

Love it, thanks for the effort. It's great

This is interesting &mdash 03/29/08 - 12:45:50 PM
I hope you post the other components of the Industrielle Series.

A very creative entry.

The soft vocals are such a paradox to the industrial sounding opening.

Lovely &mdash 03/29/08 - 12:59:24 PM
I really like the timber of the underlying rhythm. That granulation really sounds like a Japanese Koto - very delicate and tine-like. Terrific atmosphere and mood! Like rain drops falling on glass bottles. I've been listening to Bjork's "Volta" lately and this song reminds me of "I See Who You Are." (P.S. Is that a 6-color printing press?)

rain drops falling on glass bottles... &mdash 03/30/08 - 10:19:32 PM
...i like that simile! Thank you for your comments here. I will have to look up the song by Bjork.
I've really had a lot of fun delving into the more experimental/ambient realm recently, in addition to doing my 'usual genres.'

The picture is from the exhibit--and what was the once the steel mill. They are called finishing stands. They look to me like massive guardians lining the wall...waiting and watching.

Beautiful &mdash 03/29/08 - 01:38:28 PM
This is very effective, and a wonderful response to the "ugliness" of the original loop. The beats are great, a nice subtle groove, and the sounds overlaying it are hypnotic and captivating. I like the commentary on the photo - surprising and unexpected, but effective. Nicely done. Peace.

graceful.. &mdash 03/29/08 - 03:11:28 PM
I didn't think you could make that loop work so gracefully! I love how you brought in the machine feel too! I'm very much looking forward to checking out the rest of your material.

like the path this loop took. all the vocals were great, but the spoken vocal was my fav.

Delicate and Steel &mdash 03/29/08 - 06:09:46 PM
I'm seeing huge, incomprehensible machines made of glass and crystal, lit in sloping rays of afternoon dusk in a rusty and dingy warehouse of murk and shadows.

How you discovered this kind of grace and magic in that awful sound is beyond me. Beautiful beyond words...

Pleased to meet another loop killer - &mdash 03/29/08 - 07:33:19 PM
I really like what you put together here. The fix of tempos and textures really play well with your voice. The photo and background story is cool too.

Since I now live in what was steel alley, &mdash 03/29/08 - 11:39:46 PM
I can relate to this song. There is a strange beauty in the photos I've seen of the dismantling of steel mills in this valley. Some of the beauty comes from the textures of the industrial landscape, some from the destruction of something that is so ugly. On the other hand it is sad to because it is the realization that a way of life has come to an end. But then again there is some beauty in death.

good posting that I enjoyed a lot.

Brilliant &mdash 03/30/08 - 04:11:57 AM
The music is really good and such a good idea that has come off really well. Also you have a lovely voice that adds to the music very well. I just cannot believe what you have done with the sample. The whole song is lovely, it should really go on for longer, it seems to stop suddenly, which is a shame, but that does not stop it being a brilliant track. I'm really impressed.

Amazing &mdash 03/30/08 - 12:54:45 PM
Funny the first song I listen to from this LIOLI challenge comes from you. Always been a fan. Your voice is wonderful as always. IMHO, I wish this would've lasted a while longer. :)

Thanks for sharing.

visions of Metropolis... &mdash 03/30/08 - 04:22:55 PM
dancing through my head. Those machines have a strange personality to them don't they...I though they were looking at me...maybe they are. Maybe the light isn't all that's captured in there. Nice Myst...you know I like this.

Ms. Cat... &mdash 03/30/08 - 07:32:32 PM
I love your speaking voice...

Film and audio producers who can't get in line for Emma Thompson need to start calling you...

I have never been too inclined towards "industrial chic", or towards music inspired by things industrial, or by tractors, but this ends up very human, very alive, and very musical...

Wonderful remix &mdash 03/30/08 - 07:34:15 PM
of that awful guitar. Smooth, cool ambient mix. I'd file this under Ambient, myself. However, you did a real cool bit of surgery, no matter what you call it.

Nice going.

How DO you do that &mdash 03/30/08 - 11:21:27 PM
Wonderful, mechanical, alive, bleepy, ethereal, and so very creative. I have the image of being in an abandoned space station with loose machined floating all around.

Too cool. Thanks Cat!!!

Be well,

Hypnotic and captivating &mdash 03/31/08 - 02:04:25 PM

..in it's repetiveness. Not heard the loop set yet ..
but I can tell it's well disguised and often a sensible approach to inspire from.

The machine sounds give a hint of industrial but nicely not over-done .. subtler and distant somehow, like of a past age...which is apt considering the inspiring art.

The repeated "capture" and sultry delivery reminded me of Blondie's "rapture" a little.

Fantastic vocals as usual and lovely rich soundscape. Grand entry.

Cool! &mdash 04/01/08 - 05:01:02 PM
Some of the sounds remind me of the sounds Soul coughing used to get in there backgrounds. I like the dragging sound Is it just me or does this end abruptly anyway I enjoyed!

Ethereal &mdash 04/01/08 - 07:28:07 PM
I hear the loop, but you manage to create a really cool soundscape with it. Your voice and the industrial rhythms are well mixed. Enjoyed!

Thanks

capture &mdash 04/02/08 - 01:02:47 AM
photography is so even. it just sees. sort of reminds me of the movie Soldier with the waste planet.. Jonathan made a poster recently for a pinball tournament; steel like heavy metal. we really got into it. metal is unusual to consciousness. not sure why it is considered evil. just a tool i suppose. my dad used to work in wood. made some really beautiful things. but the knives were the key. and that was where metal met reality. through metal some really beautiful natural evidence presents. I guess the first metal evil was bone or dead wood.. tools for whacking; you can see this thing gets me thinking...

thanks for posting!

For how much processing that you did, it really came out sounding natural. I love your soft vox that hover in the background. Great mix and and dreamy production.

Ed's comment, and your song, reminded me of this classic story by Tracy Kidder. Here's to freeing one's inner geek :) Well done on this composition Cat.

puts me in a Catatonic state &mdash 04/04/08 - 10:12:55 AM
I hear the return of the marbles rolling down the chutes, but softened and twisted a bit. Love the intro and the build and grind of the machinery, coupled with your soft voice, makes a sweet dichotomy. It almost verged on muddy near the end, but you did a super job of keeping things pretty clear, a tough job with these sounds! Excellent!

Conveyor &mdash 04/05/08 - 02:19:59 AM
I truly love this and have been listening to it for a few days now. You sound incredibly comfortable and in control of what you're doing with the spoken word combined with the industrial sound and the ethereal singing. It's really incredibly well-executed, Mysti, and shows you at the top of your game. I heard industrial sounds in the loop as well, by the time I was done manipulating it, I kept thinking of a conveyor belt that needed oil, and some of your sounds remind me of that, as well, so your industrial imagery makes a lot of sense to me. Lovely and wonderful expert. --L
