Description:
Here is my first newbie. The day after I got my new Epiphone Dot Studio, Diane and I were sitting and chatting about music and things in general. Suddenly the phone rang and it was for her. I figured she’d be on it for awhile, so I grabbed my “Epi” and tuned up.
Within moments of tuning it up I began to get this chord progression. It virtually “fell” out of the guitar. Diane was on the phone for eight minutes. During that small space of time I was able to compose this little ditty, which will henceforth serve as my “warm up” tune. I hope you enjoy it!
Be well all!

Hi McBoy! &mdash 03/31/08 - 02:14:31 PM
Prior to recording this tune I was working on a big progressive rocker (which will be my next posting). I worked for a month on that mix.
After that I REALLY needed to do something stripped down and simple. This little ditty came along, and voila! Thank God for small favors.
Glad you enjoyed it.

That is coming back with style &mdash 03/31/08 - 11:50:25 AM
What a solid thumping tune Mike - and that progression really works well (a warm-up indeed!!).
I'm constantly amazed at how a new instrument (or even a sampled instrument) can inspire the sounds to come seemingly out of nowhere. I'm glad they do for you too!
Be well,
Doug [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Doug... &mdash 03/31/08 - 02:23:29 PM
Vic Holman says that new toys tend to come with new tunes built right into them. That's my experience too.
In the days that followed the purchase of my Epiphone, I was able to compose three full tunes that just seemed to be there waiting for me to snatch them out of the air!
This is way more simple than my usual fare, but it's great fun to play. I thought it would be nice if I was able to come back and make a few people smile and tap their feet.

Nice first post Bro &mdash 03/31/08 - 01:48:37 PM
Hey! I really like the mixing part in this one, the drums sounds live? as the guitar is way too cool mixed.. Welcome back Mike.
YOU ROCK. [ Reply to This ]
Hi Kenta! &mdash 03/31/08 - 02:32:39 PM
Thanks for the kind words.
I use Drums On Demand now whenever I'm able. They do tend to sound a little more live than the drum loops that come with GB or LE. Some of it may also be due to my making them so prominent in the mix and adding just a hint of reverb.
Glad you dug the tuneage my friend!

I used one of Hendrix's standard stomp box combinations, and added a Bit-crusher, EQ-ing and compression to get that edgy guitar sound. Glad it struck a chord with you! Ha ha...

And back with style. This is way cool. Great sound from that guitar, young man. The mix is great, too - lovely drum sound - and the changes are very nice. Nicely done. Can't wait to hear what else you've got in store for us. Welcome back! Peace. [ Reply to This ]
Many thanks David! &mdash 04/01/08 - 12:12:37 AM
Although I must take exception to the phrase "young man"! I'll be 55 on April 22nd you knw. I'd much rather be 22 on April 55th---but THAT'S not gonna happen! Ha ha...
I do have three more tunes ready to go (and three more in development). The next one will be a Prog-rocker with a philosophical bent (big surprise, huh?) After that I've got a Stones/Faces type rocker that Vic Holman helps me out on. I even have a Mellotron-based semi-orchestral instrumental waiting in the wings.
You know me man, I refuse to get into a rut. But doing this piece did give me a much deeper respect for the stripped-down and minimalist approach. I will probably visit this territory again soon.
BTW, I'm thrilled to see that you too are back and posting again.

Hey Mike this is great &mdash 03/31/08 - 06:42:51 PM
Somehow I prefer this simple approach to the meticulous and indugent approach, which actually works but to my ears soemthing like this is easier for me to compute and appreciate, ttotally kick ass instrumental with an apropos song title [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Tom! &mdash 04/01/08 - 12:28:05 AM
Glad you like it.
I'm afraid I have a few "meticulous" and "indulgent" pieces coming up though...I'll probably never stop trying to push the envelope. It's in my blood!
But I'm sure I'll return to this simple, more nearly "punkish" approach again. I had a blast recording and mixing this!
Be well man! [ Reply to This ]
Good to see a new post from you Mike &mdash 03/31/08 - 06:44:51 PM
This moves along rather nicely - are those Apple loops on the drums as usual? They sound more "in yer face" and varied than you were doing before.
Just read the DoD reference - that explains the better sounding kit!
Nice gui sounds.
Can't wait to hear your next vocal post.
Cheers,

Good to hear from you!
Yeah, Mike Dancy talked me into going DoD. Although mixing them is a little trickier than with regular loops, I really like the sound and feel.
My next two posts will have vocals (for good or for ill...)

Nice track Micheal! 8 minutes to write this?!? Damn that's amazing- give me 8 months and I couldn't write this good :)
The mix sounds nice. I hope some of my tips helped more than hindered you.
Those DoD drums sound excellent too. Nice job working those in here.
Oh, I haven't forgotten about those CD's I promised you. It's been crazy here lately :-P [ Reply to This ]
Hi'ya Mojo! &mdash 04/01/08 - 12:39:21 AM
Yep...about 8 minutes...
But in all fairness, the music didn't arise in a vaccuum. I had been listening to an inordinate amount of the Glenn Kaiser Band during the preceeding week (a power trio who play blues-based hard rock). There were, no doubt, a lot of ideas lurking about just below my surface consciousness.
Your tips, and some I got from Vic, have helped me IMMENSELY. I have used them on all four of my newbies.
And I'm lovin' the DoD!
No hurry on the CDs. Life comes first!

awsome &mdash 04/01/08 - 12:31:50 PM
this is great. there are so many awsome riffs i've made out of the blue i wish i had recorded. i used to be great for making the best melodies and such but could never get them put into a cohesive song form. too many small changes and such i could never decide how i best liked them. this is really awsome. it's sort of surfy in parts but really heavy. some good lead as well. [ Reply to This ]
Many thanks CM! &mdash 04/01/08 - 12:36:40 PM
Glad you liked it it.
I know what you mean about riffs you wish you'd recorded. Sometimes when I'm at work i get a great riff in my head, but by the time I get home it's gone. It can be really frustrating. I lucked out this time!
RE "surfy": I wasn't going for that, but now that you mention it I can hear a bit of that too.
Take care man! [ Reply to This ]

Oh Man! &mdash 04/01/08 - 05:22:50 PM
You're so right about the CBGB's challenge, this would have completely worked for that. Maybe it's not finished and you can slap some punky lyrics on this bad boy or put it up for a CBGB's collab and see what happens.
Great tune, very nice tone, too. It's good to see you back, Michael and the story behind your return is good to hear, as well.

Hi Lisa! &mdash 04/03/08 - 03:00:01 AM
So nice to hear from you girl!
Hey! I'm a bit puzzled by your CBGB's reference. I'm afraid I don't know what that is! Care to enlighten me?
I did this tune as a kind of escape. Prior to recording it I had been working for a whole month on a complicated prog-rocker (next week!)...I needed to do something simple and fun.
RE vocals: I've got too many irons in the fire to go back to this anytime soon. It'll probably remain just your everyday, ordinary punk-rock instrumental.
