Description:
It took a week of experimenting before I was finally able to get something going with Dr. Lioli’s Loop. This wasn’t easy sledding, boy, but once it got started things began to really move! What kicked it into focus was deciding to head in a completely different direction, abandoning the dance-beat grooves I usually end up with and going with a much more aggressive, guitar-based direction. Problem: no guitar. (My Trusty Epiphone is still in intensive care, waiting for a rewiring job.) So I fired up GarageBand’s Big Electric Lead, cracked my knuckles and thought, okay, let’s see what this thing will do.
So… two weeks later, here it is. The Loop itself had been used essentially unchanged, although cut apart and reassembled in places using pitch variations to give the impression of chord changes. This created the playground for Big Electric Lead, which is used exclusively throughout the piece – no keyboards or synths anywhere. (Yeah, I know, Big Electric Lead actually IS a synth, technically…) I also slipped in homages to Loop It Or Lose It: Round 1 (listen for Rock Guitar No. 11… remember that one?) as well as to an iconic classic rock song from the early seventies. I couldn’t resist.
What a blast this turned out to be!

Groovin' bass line you got goin' here. Cool cuts on the loop with the delay. I think it's a conspiracy :)
Nice job!

Conspiracies! Conspiracies!
I'm so glad you were able to join this crazy band of Super Loopers, Harold. What an unbelievable array of entries, huh? I thought Doc L might have had the best of us with that GAWDAWFUL loop, but wow... the entries have been nothing short of amazing.

I had a LOT of fun with Big Electric Lead; never even knew you could do stuff like this with it. I'm still learning new tricks with GarageBand even now.
Thanks for listening, Feter. Still up in Woodstock? What a party that was!

Soon? I'm sick of it NOW! I was sick of it two WEEKS ago! (laugh) Hosting this round was both an honor and a riot; hearing all these amazing entries built out of that single awful loop is nothing short of amazing. You and Linda, between you, managed THREE! (Shaking my head in wonder)
Glad you liked this one, Kenta. I think it'll be a long, long time before Doc Lioli will ever taunt MacJammers again! [ Reply to This ]

I truly think Dr Lioli will rue this day for a very, very long time. Who'da thunk there'd be twenty-six entries coming outta that gawdawful loop? Wow!
The Loopers have come through indeed!
btw... LOVED your entry! I'm STILL grinning! [ Reply to This ]
Do I smell a little &mdash 03/29/08 - 07:22:45 PM
smoke on the water at the end there? This is really incredible Rik - you've outdone yourself. How cool to hear you break tradition and leave the keys and bunnies behind for this one. Rockin' tune dude! [ Reply to This ]
Smoke On The Water &mdash 03/30/08 - 08:51:23 PM
...you betcha! By about that point in the tune, that Loop was starting to sound almost a little like a John Lord organ. Dunno why I thought that, but then I got to thinking about 'what if a tiny slice of some iconic, recognizable rock riff were to slip in for just a moment or two...'
Anyway, it was a ton of fun and quite refreshing to work this far out of my comfort zone. I learned a ton of stuff about GarageBand's note control settings on this one; areas I'd never touched before. Now I feel like I'm rediscovering GB all over again.
THIS is yet another reason I, like so many others here, care about LIOLI so much. And I do believe we all got the doc good on this one! [ Reply to This ]
Holy Moly! &mdash 03/29/08 - 07:58:25 PM
Man... Rik this smokes! Nice job sneaking Guitar No. 11 in there too. [ Reply to This ]
Nice Job &mdash 03/30/08 - 09:03:32 PM
I was surprised to find out that Guitar 11 actually fit in there! And it seemed to make a nice homage to the original Loop It Or Lose It round that started it all.
Now I'm itching to get my real guitar back into playing condition... [ Reply to This ]
Your a better man than I Rik &mdash 03/29/08 - 08:16:53 PM
All I did was burry the little sucker in anything and everything I could find. I felt like a cat at the litter box trying to cover up his s**t.
Not you, no way. You find a way to make something useful out of the little bugger. And a very fine job you did indeed I might add. Sounds really coo,l especially considering what you started out with.
Kudos to you Rik

Whatever Works! &mdash 03/31/08 - 06:17:39 AM
That's the great thing about having a team of Loopers... we all hit that accursed loop differently. And believe me, burying it in a litterbox is a fitting fate for it. (laugh) Loved your entry, it was great having you come on board the LIOLI Express - I figured you'd enjoy yourself.
Glad you liked this. Lots of fun yankin' and bankin' the Big Electric Lead synth! [ Reply to This ]
Wow, powerful &mdash 03/30/08 - 04:28:22 AM
Very cool rock track, I really like the composition. Full On!! Love the electric guitar, and the fact its a synth is amazing. Well Done Rik, and thanks for bringing Lioli back to life, it is a brilliant challenge that has brought the best out of people and most of all the fun it has created. Thanks very much, its been a hoot. :-)) [ Reply to This ]
Challenges &mdash 03/31/08 - 06:42:09 AM
Thanks for the cheer, but LIOLI is only what everyone makes it, and you (along with the rest of the Loopers) did stuff with this loop that defied musical physics! It was a lot of fun for me, and immensely gratifying to see that LIOLI has such strong support seven challenges along. [ Reply to This ]
what a cool rock tune &mdash 03/30/08 - 01:14:23 PM
Rockin' &mdash 03/31/08 - 06:52:05 AM
From one of MacJams' greatest guitar players this is high praise indeed! The Big Electric Lead synth is a lot of fun and capable of some pretty nifty things but it will NEVER replace a real guitar or a pair of hands that know how to play it.
It was refreshing to head in a completely different direction for a change - although that gawdawful loop left me no choice. Yeeesh, it was rough! [ Reply to This ]
uh oh... &mdash 03/30/08 - 02:46:46 PM
...looks like we're bringin a big gun to polish off what's left of the doc..no mercy! Killer track, Rik [ Reply to This ]
No Mercy &mdash 03/31/08 - 06:56:05 AM
You bet - I don't want to EVER have to deal with another awful Loop like that one again! Seriously, though, it's been a rush to hear what that awful loop has been turned into - the talent here is unbelievable.
Glad you joined the Cadre Of Super Loopers, Willy - and MacJams! Looking forward to hearing more stuff from you in the future! [ Reply to This ]

Great solid rock. Driving, wailing, pounding. Inspired. Very deep. And just a little purple. :o)
Rik, thanks for putting this forward and for all the work it takes to organise and keep the momentum up on this project. Much appreciated!
Be well,
Doug

Very Deep... Purple...? &mdash 03/31/08 - 07:07:04 AM
I don't get it... are you referring to the artwork? It's mostly red and brown, not purple... although I was going to use Blackmore - I mean, more black - for contrast. And I almost typed my name as 'Ritchie', for some reason. That's silly - my name is Rik. (Although I've heard it can be 'Ricky' if I'm playing at Wembley (laugh) Ahhh... the things we do, eh?
This whole challenge was a ton of fun. The effort and work was worth the payoff of hearing the incredible variations of entries from that single nasty loop. Who'd have believed it? After seven challenges I'm STILL stoked by what MacJammers can come up with.
Deep... Purple... I'll have to Google that and figure it out. Right after I finish drinking my morning coffee. You know... the steam rising out of the cup makes me think of something... water... smoke... smoke on...
Oh, it's probably nothing.

Wow...nice use of that synth guitar-I'm impressed!
Again--another very successful use of the loop as it was presented.
Kudos!
Thank you, too, for getting this challenge going. What fun it's been to participate and to listen to all the creativity it's spurred with the resulting tracks! :) [ Reply to This ]
Synth Guitar &mdash 04/01/08 - 09:25:00 AM
Interestingly, I had no idea of what the synth guitar could do until I started this project. There's no replacing the real instrument, but it was a real hoot playing with Big Electric Lead and seeing how far I could push it.
I'm glad you enjoyed the Challenge: it's all of us cooking up our own versions that make LIOLI such an amazing ride. I hope you'll be a regular! [ Reply to This ]
Cue the Spotlight! &mdash 03/31/08 - 01:18:43 AM
This is like the big guitar solo that happens when the singer goes backstage for the beer. I love how the drummer joins at the end to tells us it's almost over and the singer is coming back. And then, you cut it so Dr. Lioli doesn't get a chance to sing!
Always a pleasure hearing your tunes! [ Reply to This ]

It was a rush to have you come back for a LIOLI Challenge, Stooey. Great job on yours too - there's been some incredible entries for this round, like every LIOLI Challenge! [ Reply to This ]

Phrasing &mdash 04/01/08 - 09:30:36 AM
This was a fairly new style for me... so it was a refreshing change of pace. And as well, experimenting with the Big Electric Lead voice was a lot of fun. Glad you liked it - and even more that you joined in! [ Reply to This ]
Big &mdash 03/31/08 - 03:31:23 PM
Big sound here Rik. Love what you are doing with the loop, the cuts and echoing pauses are very effective. Searing leads and the Dr at the end fill this out well. Great stuff!
Thanks

Searing leads &mdash 04/01/08 - 09:36:18 AM
Yeah... those are the kind of leads that get the groupies' hearts all a-flutter. Who'd ever imagine a middle-aged guy with poor knees would create them with a pencil tool on a computer? Really takes some of the 'Ted Nugent wild man' edge off, doesn't it? (laugh)
This entry actually taught me a lot about GB that I'd never tried before - playing around with the note control settings can have HUGE influences on the sound. I'd experimented with Big Electric Lead before, but never on this scale. Now I'm feeling jazzed up again, and want to get ripping into some new stuff!
Just another LIOLI Challenge benefit, huh? [ Reply to This ]

I've just been really busy and wanted to catch up on some things I might have missed. Glad I came across this one.
Some great things done with the loop here. You surprised me with the EQ on the loop. Not used to hearing it with the low end I also like the way you chopped it up.
Some cool musical jokes in here too..
good stuff. [ Reply to This ]
