LIOLI7 (5)Headbanger (1)Metal (148)Rock (1083)
Description:
The lads known as Ricky and the Raskals were hastily assembled by promoter and band manager Basil Hoggthorpe in hopes of defeating the evil Doctor and his heinous plans. Sadly, the lads were rather stuck each in their own genre with a rather limited number of riffs that each had memorised. Still, Basil was able to coax out of them some semblance of a coherent tune that could do the deed, and with adverts for free beer was able to fill Wembley stadium to capacity for their brief show. This was the only recording the Raskals made as sadly their drummer, Stig, met his demise when the final pyrotechnics vaporised him at the close of the act.

Hope you enjoy this bit of history from Ricky, Roger, Bertie, and Stig - the Raskals.... and that the evil Doctor will bother us with that wretched loop no longer.

Appreciate your comments as always! Now onto something for Woodstock!! (I actually found out about your Woodstock project after this piece was composed and thought about modifying it to serve both projects but decided that was the cheap way out. Back to the keyboard....)

Keep well my friend,
Doug

Wow, Full On Rock &mdash 03/30/08 - 04:36:12 AM
Love also the choir section in the middle. Very full track, and love the stadium feel. Very cool track Doug, you have been hard at work with this one, there are so many elements to this track. I would not have a clue how you did it all. Very good Doug, very impressive.

Well, being the kind of lazy type &mdash 03/30/08 - 10:05:33 AM
I used a lot of loops, but did embellish them here and there with my own performances. Glad you liked the middle break - I was hoping to provide a change from the monotony of the wall of distortion and thought I might have strayed a bit far into a prog rock feel, but it was all good fun.

Thanks so much for your kind remarks!

Rock on,
Doug

Great to hear from you &mdash 03/30/08 - 10:17:11 AM
I always feel behind in my work when I think of your prolific composing of such fine music, but then I hold that as a possible state I might reach some day.

I still have not forgotten your piece for the HJP my friend (nor Feter's) BTW. Hopefully I can get to them soon!

Thanks Kent,

All the best,
Doug

Nice use of the loop!

Ricky can you hear me? &mdash 03/30/08 - 09:11:54 AM
Love that middle break - pretty amazing concoction here - really covered all the bases. The way you cut the loop for the opening riff is brilliant.

to me after this.

Love it Doug, you did a great job here my friend. Love how you broke it up into segments, makes it sound like a real concert. Outstanding.

The Doctor won't be coming back with this awful loop ever again after hearing this.

Great tune man

Thanks for the high praise Ed. After hearing your own entry I'm humbled by your creativity and funkiness. Appreciate you stopping by man.

Be well,

Thanks M_D &mdash 03/30/08 - 04:21:12 PM
I attribute the faux-live mix to Rik who I heard do it first (I'm sure there were others but it was his piece that got me going a long while back).

Glad you liked it!

Cheers,
Doug

the tail end... &mdash 03/30/08 - 03:46:50 PM
..of these lioli entries just keep bringin the heavy artillery. love the guitar work doug...awesome arrangement too. The choir thing reminds me of The Tubes "white punks on dope"; but it sounds so original that it probably wasn't even a thought. Excellent!

Thanks for the support &mdash 03/30/08 - 04:37:30 PM
No, the Tubes wasn't a thought (reminds me of Firesign Theatre who parodied the song with White Brains on Toast). What I wanted to to was get an effect of the band suddenly singing well in harmony but didn't want to record it myself so it does sound like the choir that it comes from. Still, it emphasises the tongue-in-cheek nature of the whole piece.

Much appreciated! Thanks for lending an ear...

Be well,
Doug

Spaceship Superstar! &mdash 03/30/08 - 06:01:34 PM
...as far as pulling off 'fake live' goes, this is the one that kicks the bar that much higher! I absolutely LOVE how it moves so effortlessly through the prog-rock sound, with the guitars and Prism-like synthesizers building layer on layer. After about the sixth listen I forgot this wasn't actually live!

Unbelievable job - so glad you joined the band of Super Loopers! Thank yewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.........

Hello 'Ricky' &mdash 03/30/08 - 11:16:14 PM
I hope you aren't offended that I named the band leader after you (with plausible deniability due to the spelling :o) I wanted to make a tribute number to your Chocolate Rabbits piece some time ago and given your inspiration with that tune, plus all the hard work you've put into this LIOLI event I thought you deserved some fame in front of the Wembley fans.

Your comments are very kind - this was a ton of fun, and thanks for the inspiration to plug in the virtual fuzz box.

All the best,
Doug

Hahaha :) &mdash 03/30/08 - 06:05:40 PM
This is a cool example of working WITH the loop (instead of churning it inside-out as I did) .

Hehee. I was wondering if anyone was going to use the loop straightforwardly, and I've actually been surprised at how many have.

Another great entry into LIOLI7. I really enjoyed this! :)

I think the loop churning &mdash 03/30/08 - 11:46:12 PM
that you and other did is wonderful. Such different sounds from the same basic source. And you don't have to get singed in the process. :o)

Thanks for your support Cat.

All the best!

That was the album - Right! &mdash 03/31/08 - 01:13:53 PM
I think the drummer curse came from the band watching the movie Spinal Tap the night before the gig. Who knows, but it did gain them some notoriety.

Thanks for stopping by!

As Bass &mdash 03/31/08 - 03:46:35 PM
Nice twist. Loop as bass part. Kind of a medley of lead parts, all very interesting. Love the live concert feel.

Thanks

Hey Bill &mdash 04/01/08 - 07:29:21 PM
Yeah, it is a medly of leads. Kind of reminds me of college days when my buddies and I all knew the recognisable bits of songs but couldn't play the whole thing. So what would happen, I thought, if a band were formed with the same limitations and had to turn off of these licks into a tune. Kind of like a survey of rock's most defining licks all rammed into one piece. Like the old 'stars on 45' if you remember that stuff.

Anyway, thanks for the supportive comments and for having a listen.

Best,
Doug

The Drummer! &mdash 03/31/08 - 08:05:54 PM
Why does it always have to be the drummer. Wouldn't it be a refreshing change to see the lead guitarist go up in a flash of light as his neglected amp cord touches the spilled beer on stage, or the bass player is crushed by the wight of his own ego.

As for the song. It's an interesting selection of riffs, but it works! I also love the use of ambiance that you included.

Good Job.

The mystery of the drummer &mdash 04/01/08 - 07:24:13 PM
I don't know why it was so funny with Spinal Tap that they kept losing drummers but for some reason I don't think the humour would have worked with the keyboard player or other band members. Anyway, I thought I would jump on the same band-wagon and off the drummer here too. Nothing personal.

The real reason for the collection of riffs is that I was pressed for time and am basically lazy and so I picked out what I thought would support the style of the required loop and then I had less work to thread connecting pieces into the mix to make it have some semblance of being in the same tune. This worked to an extent, but I still ended up creating a lot of new bits - more than I would have thought necessary at the outset. So in a way my explanation of the band only each knowing certain riffs is correct, but that is due to the limitations I imposed through basic sloth on my part.

Glad you like it, and thanks for commenting.

Best wishes,
Doug

.. a cool mix around of all styles. trippy and heady as a blue oyster cult show with lasers during the early 70's.

Thanks VIc &mdash 04/01/08 - 07:33:34 PM
And as with Blue Oyster Cult, I even added cow bell after some test listening and hearing that voice in my head for 'gotta have more cowbell'. Now how to go about sonically representing those lasers.....

Thanks for the very positive remarks.

Cool song doug &mdash 04/05/08 - 08:22:04 PM
I love your mix here and I of course love the song. But then I may be one of the only people still alive who remember Ricky and the Raskals having been lured to the concert by the free beer. Most of the people who were at that show blacked out from drinking too much and don't remember the show. I arrived too late and only got a single pint so I do remember the show, but not this song because I was SO late that I totally missed the performance.

BTW you might be interested in a couple of "live performances" that I have posted on my page. One of them is a rare recording named "One Note William Live At Carnegie Hall"

and the other is called "Second Encore"

Excellent stuff &mdash 04/06/08 - 02:03:46 PM
Love the backstory! Great use of sounds, all very nicely blended to form something remarkably coherent and...well there's no other for it...rockin'! I especially loved it when the acoustic guitar and choral voices came in! Roll on the triple concept album!! Excellent stuff. You have the magic touch. Nicely done. Peace.

Hey man, thanks for the thumbs up &mdash 04/06/08 - 03:37:17 PM
The concept album is indeed making a comeback (I guess that the Hero's Journey Project is a modern concept mega album in that case).

Glad you liked the tune and I appreciate the enthusiastic response.

a bit frenetic for my taste.

Frenetic is a great term for this, particularly in contrast to quieter pieces like Deliberating the Call. Thanks for stopping by and having a listen!
