Description:
Another remix, this time of an older song that I had up here and deleted. I recorded this in October of 2006 as a tribute to our dog, Smokey, who had gotten old and infirm as dogs do and passed away. He was a dear friend. Originally recorded in Garageband, it features me playing lap steel guitar and soft synth strings, harp and the Fitch solo Cello and Tibetan Bells. I remixed by opening it up in Logic Pro 8 and editing expression and modulation in the cello part and using Space Designer to open up the ambience of the piece. I got inspired by listening to the latest Daniel Lanois album to create a dreamier sonic landscape.

The painting of Smokey that is the song art was done by my wife Andrea Tamkin, and you can see more of her work at her website.

Hardware:
Harmony lap steel guitar, Boss DD-20 Gigadelay, Peavey Delta Blues amp

Software:
GB, LP8

I loved this very much. Great for a rainy morning like the one we're having.

Your wife is really talented! I went to her site, and now I want her to do portraits of our pets!

I'll have to ask the future hubby though...

Love your ambient work, Jim. This one was a nice mix of ambient effects and interesting chord changes. Some of the lap steel parts sound like a mournful dog whine.

Nice ambient motion, tight concept yet amorphic feel. Watery. Melting memories into future dreams. Sad without burdened nostalgia, something strong about it. Very interesting not-folk-music work!

i can hear the Lanois influence, but it's more of a feel sort of thing. htose swells are so pretty in the soundbed. so sorry about smokey, i like to think of my dog as immortal, guess this tribute makes Smokey immortal.
