Description:
This is the second draft of my string piece. In this draft there are 3 sections that are a bit clumsily connected and slightly underdeveloped, but I plan to fix those issues in the next (hopefully final) draft. I will also name it once I finish.

Guitar &mdash 03/31/08 - 07:49:30 PM
Thanks for the idea. I agree it would probably sound good. I kind of wanted to keep it strings (bowed strings) this time, but I am probably going to fully orchestrate it someday in which case I'll consider a guitar. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Good music piece &mdash 03/31/08 - 12:00:07 PM
Hi Chip
I think you are about to get there, much better variation in harmony now and sound.
One of the passes must be at aprox. 2:30 sec. You might try to start the next piece a bit before so it sounds like it's sliding over in the 2 piece if you understand what I mean ?
It will be a fine cinematic soundtrack once you get it done. I can imagine watching a movie with that sound.

Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. I uploaded this before going to bed, and when I woke up this morning there were like 20 or 30 songs already uploaded since. It's hard to keep up these days.

String Piece &mdash 03/31/08 - 11:41:44 PM
This is really becoming something exciting. Wonderful musical soundscapes throughout. I can't wait to hear the final version, though I have to say this is extremely impressive just as is. Your string work is so evocative and heartfelt - ya GOT me! [ Reply to This ]
String piece &mdash 04/01/08 - 01:21:34 AM
Thanks very much. Coming from you I take that as high praise! I want to make this piece longer, but I'm afraid if it's too long people won't listen. Hope to have the final done soon.
Thanks again for your kind words.

Nice composing &mdash 04/10/08 - 12:52:12 AM
Very dramatic piece. You seem to be digging for the deep emotion that strings can provide.
Through no fault of your own I think the release of the string sounds is letting you down a bit. Your composing is better than the sounds you are able get. For instance, I like how you used low strings at times and higher ones at others, keeping the music dynamic.
A bit more reverb and some longer release times are spices that would bring out the flavor in this delicious piece. I will be interested in tracking the progress you make as an orchestrator. This is a great start. [ Reply to This ]
Spices &mdash 04/10/08 - 04:09:18 AM
Thanks for your detailed comments, Patrick. I really appreciate your taking the time to offer advice. I will try to work on the releases. The piece is perhaps a bit overly dramatic. I have noticed my music is not very subtle. I should probably spend more time quietly imagining the sounds instead of rushing to put down just anything.
Thanks again.

Nah... &mdash 04/10/08 - 09:01:09 PM
Overly dramatic? Not to my ears - not at all. I wouldn't worry about your music lacking subtlety, nor would I force myself to spend time quietly imagining the sounds. I wouldn't force anything like that just yet.
I would advise you to simply keep writing, and the contrast between what you write and what you want to hear will keep leading you where you want to go. Along the way, you'll come up with a lot of very good music. You've got a feel, Chip. Go with it. [ Reply to This ]

I really appreciate your encouragement. I will try to keep on plugging and see what happens. It's so great to have a place like this where one can find advice and motivation. Thank you.

Wonderful &mdash 04/11/08 - 04:17:22 AM
I love the simplicity of the opening; deeply emotional, no need for flashiness. It sounds like you were influenced by Beethoven, which is obviously wonderful. I personally think you shouldn't expand this beyond strings because there is such power in what you already have. sometimes adding more takes away this emotional power. For this reason, I'm also not sure the timpani are necessary here... but I have to admit, they work well nevertheless. If you're looking for ideas as to what else you could do with this material, consider modulating.
Wonderful work! [ Reply to This ]
orchestration &mdash 04/11/08 - 06:56:28 AM
Thank you very much for your kind comments and advice. It's such a struggle to know how much to add. At first I imagined this as only a string piece. Later I started listening to movie soundtrack scores and felt like strings were too bare. In the latest version (not yet uploaded) I'm basically trying to orchestrate the middle section and possible the last section. I want to learn how to orchestrate better so hopefully adding more instruments won't ruin it. I appreciate the advice though. I will consider it.

Beautiful, Chip... &mdash 04/16/08 - 11:04:45 AM
...sorry I'm late...I agree with McBoy: an acoustic single note would sound nice in there. Wonder why we'd agree on that?
You'll do what's right for you...I really like this, Chip. [ Reply to This ]
Guitar &mdash 04/16/08 - 07:54:19 PM
Actually I tried sticking a classical guitar in their after McBoy's suggestion. It was nice, but it would be nicer if it was a real guitar instead of a midi instrument. I decided to try harp, but it was a pretty boring line. Maybe you or another guitarist out there would like to give it a try? If so let me know. I think I disabled the download button here.
Thanks for your kind comments, Bob.

Not an excuse... &mdash 04/17/08 - 09:08:13 AM
...just a fact that I barely have time to record my own tunes, nowadays. I'd love to work on this and, if I find a moment (or three), I appreciate the offer and will do that, Chip.Thanks.
Meanwhile, keep up the great sounds!

string draft dev. &mdash 04/19/08 - 08:32:51 PM
This has a good feel to it--structure and flow, and nice to listen to.
My critique is with the string articulations. I know this is unfinished, and you may already by aware of this. Sounds in many spots like solo samples are overlayed with section samples, and the cutoffs are a little abrupt. (I use AOJP as well, and it has non-uniform string samples. I've had some success doubling a part and using a different string (such as solo cello) doubling the viola part. Also, slightly overlapping the endings to enhance legato, and sometimes bringing the note in a little early to compensate for slower articulation. (Feel free to msg me if this isn't clear.)
Keep going on it. :) [ Reply to This ]
Strings &mdash 04/20/08 - 07:38:17 AM
Thanks very much for your detailed comments. I didn't use any solo string instruments, but I know it cuts off abruptly and there are many issues still to be dealt with. I will try the things you suggested and maybe get back to you if I can't understand. Thanks again. Your advice and encouragement is much appreciated.

String draft &mdash 05/12/08 - 03:35:41 AM
I like the build up on this and the way it swells up in places. I only paly guitar so I guess I would like to hear a few guitar lines sprinkled in here and there but there is a danger that this would be gratuitous and would distarct from the main event going on here.
I enjoyed this a lot - I'll definately be checking for any updates.

Guitar &mdash 05/12/08 - 08:51:50 PM
Thanks Steve, for your comments and interest. I did experiment with adding guitar and I have even added harp in a yet unposted version. I haven't released the final version yet because I can't decided if I should leave it as solely a string piece (which was suggested by a well-respected MJ member) or orchestrate it more fully. Several (also well-respected MJ members) guitarists have recommended what you said so maybe I should try a version like that and see what happens. Interested in playing guitar for me?
Thanks again,

This is a gorgeous piece of music. I think you have a wonderful ear for composition - not at all overly dramatic. If this is what you hear - than go for it! Don't try to rein it in - let it ring out. As a suggestion I can only echo what others have said - work on the string samples a little more to try to get a more realistic sound. This would be an amazing piece to hear live, with the string sounds swelling all around you. I really enjoyed this - please keep on writing. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

I like it &mdash 07/27/08 - 11:12:40 PM
This is great, kept me listening the whole way through. Lots of emotion in here.
If I might suggest a bit of tweaking with the instruments, in terms of expression, velocity and dynamics. But otherwise, Excellent. [ Reply to This ]
