Description:
This is my late entry for the Hero's Journey Project. A few weeks ago Doug left me a note about a possible contribution from me. I was working on a few ideas but disaster struck over the weekend. I lost over 60 Gb of my music files due to my main storage/working drive giving up the ghost. Let me tell you that hard disks bounce very nicely off of walls, especially from a second floor flat window!!

This offering is basically a mix put together since the disk crash. It sounds 'mythical' and 'epic' and has (to me) a nice floating lead line, so maybe it fits the bill somewhere in the story.

Let me know what you think.

I'm not sure I could write anything for weeks after a 60Gb crash and loss. This is really intriguing, pulls me in and gets the visual part of my imagination going. Definitely this is after the hero/heroine has crossed the threshold and is in a strange and wonderful land.

Works for me sir!!

Thanks for remembering the Project and for creating this compelling acoustic story.

Cheers,
Doug

It's been a while in coming but I'm fairly happy with the result of this piece. It has a few of the elements that make for more interesting music, in a story-book-setting.

I've dropped you a note with more info, as a reply to your earlier note.

Take care.

Your comments are always friendly and encouraging.

The piece seemed to flow together as I was building the tracks and working with the layers and programming.

Take care.

Sorry about your crash, but WOW - what a save this is! You've SO got the touch - I'm hoping if I keep listening to you constantly, I might learn something (besides how much I have to learn!) This is GREAT!

I enjoy reading your kind comments.

The tunes in your own music wholly make up for any technically shortfall, if any. You're doing nicely with your music and the way it sounds to me.

The hard disk crash was unexpected but life has its ups and downs and so I'm due something good, hopefully, otherwise if I weren't positive I'd be banging my head against a wall. Hard!!

Take care.

OH LORDY! &mdash 04/01/08 - 02:52:06 AM
This is an incredibly restrained piece of music, considering the loss you'd just been through. You did make me smile with your remark about the bouncability of hard drives, though. :-)

It's good to know you can still keep it together well enough to compose, Paul. May the loss mark a new start, rather than anything less hopeful.

Hi Lisa... &mdash 04/02/08 - 04:04:50 PM
Yes. The hard disk crash was maybe a blessing, from one point of view. I only decided NOT to move this 60+Gb of music last week, as the other data on the drive was less and so would take less time to move!! I guess I made the wrong choice.

This piece just seemed to make itself. I basically programmed a rhythm that output to 4 or 5 other VSTi's and picked relevant preset sounds for each track until I'd built up the sound I wanted. Then I recorded it through another VST plugin and did my production stuff to the finished file. It only took a couple of hours so I didn't dwell on what I'd just lost.

Thanks for listening and leaving your kind words.

Take care.

When I put together this type of music I always think of you, as I remember that you enjoy peaceful music. I'll have to put together a couple of meditation pieces for you. I enjoy this type of music myself.

I did have some suitable pieces on my crashed disk so I guess I'll just have to start over again.

Take care.

" Mythical... &mdash 04/01/08 - 04:14:36 PM
...and epic" to be sure. There is always something of a "grand scope" to your creations, Paul. This one is no exception. I especially like the bass line that has a musical structure all of its own. ... The crash of 60 GB of info has me scared. I'd better start backing up!
Peace.

Hi Paul... &mdash 04/02/08 - 04:15:16 PM
I'm glad that you heard the same type of things that I did as I was putting this all together. It was one of those composing and mixing sessions where everything fitted together, even though I had no idea before I started, just where I was headed.

I would say, in hindsight, that you should make at least one copy of work that you don't want to lose that isn't already uploaded somewhere. I lost all my 'work in progress' and the variations of my uploaded music from the last two years (at least). Before that time any music I did was not worth saving.

I'm OK about the loss now simply because there's nothing I can do about it at all. The drive just heats up and is not detected by any computer. No hope at all, so it's pointless me dwelling on it at all.

Take care.

hearing your story about the hard drive crash, i pictured all of your music flying around the world like some big digital swarm of bees, looking for the hive. sad story my friend, sorry to hear it.

but this piece is great, so tense. love the really low gurgling synth. i love pretty much all of your musical offerings and this no exception.

Hi Michael...... &mdash 04/02/08 - 04:20:29 PM
Yes. The idea of my music swarming around the world is interesting. I read somewhere that every sound, including voices, will be recoverable, as the noise 'travels', so we could theoretically hear what Aristotle or Beethoven said, just by tuning in on the waves. My own music has just gone to the mixing and preproduction pasture in the sky.

All I have to do now is make another 60 Gb of sounds (but back things up more often). There'll be no problem making the sounds, so I'm not worried about that.

I'm glad though that you like this piece. It's one that I enjoy listening to myself, which isn't always the case with my stuff.

Take care.

The contents of this site are awesome.

The files could be very useful for a couple of pieces I'm working on, where the sounds normally triggered would be percussion but I could add other instrument short loops. I'll let you know how things work out.

Take care.

Hello &mdash 04/05/08 - 12:25:52 PM
How's it going today? I liked your track. Sounds sci-fi for sure! I was reading your bio; do you know of Joseph Campbell?
An explorer for sure!!

Hi Pete &mdash 04/06/08 - 04:05:43 AM
One of the reasons that I put this mix together was because of Joseph Campbell. There's currently a JC-themed project on MJ's, http://www.macjams.com/artist/HerosJourney where artists can add their tunes to portray sections of the Hero's journey. You should probably check this out if you're interested.

Thanks for listening and leaving your comments.

Take care.

Hi Dee...... &mdash 04/06/08 - 04:09:29 AM
Thanks for your very kind words. A lot of my music could be classed as spacey!! It goes with the way that I think.

There's also many more tunes of this type on their way to MJ's. My focus at the moment is mainly music so the mixes seem to be flowing thick and fast.

I hope you'll listen to some more and enjoy them.

Take care.

Paul
