Description:
This is another old song from my old album "Toots' Rambles". This was recorded in 1996 on 1" Tascam Reel-to-Reel to analog tape by Brian Doser at My Other Hat Studios. The CD was mastered by Jonathan Wyner at MWorks in Cambridge and he did a damn fine job, but the other day when I was listening to this on my iPod, I noticed it seemed sort of quiet in the shuffle of songs. It did come out in the old days before the loudness wars. I took a look at it in Peak and saw that there was considerable headroom so I (horror of horror) re-mastered it very subtly, just so it's a bit louder than the CD version. I don't think I messed it up too much. I pretty much play this all live here, guitar and harmonica at the same time at least but I think I tracked the vocal separately. But it's pretty simple, acoustic guitar with slide, harmonica on a rack, my singing about a wistful memory of my childhood. I got to thinking I would put this out here because my brother Joe is coming out with his own solo CD soon and he does a cover of it.

Lyrics:
Kickin A Can

I’m kickin’ a can down the middle of the street
in the middle of the night I’m followin’ my feet
The moon shines down on meas this silent night is baring it’s teeth
the wolf is at the door
but no one’s home
I’m out here kickin a can

I’m kickin a can it rattles in the dark
all is quiet and closed up and I thought I saw a spark
and just around the corner is as dream that’s just achin’ to be found
It’s spooked easily
and though I want to draw it closer to me
I’m kickin’ a can

I’m kickin a can it’s an empty sound
that shatters the silence that has us all bound
Under the cloak of night it echoes harsh and bright
and brings the magic around
until all that’s been lost becomes found
so I’m kickin’ a can

I’m kickin’ a can, it tumbles down the street
it makes a sound out of scale in the silence like a dream
puts me in another mind another soul another time completely
if you want to know what it means
don’t ask me
I’m just kickin’ a can

Jim, a really magical tune that not only entertains but serves to ground in its own way. Delightful guitar and heartfelt vocal.

Ghost folk &mdash 04/01/08 - 08:20:53 AM
Fabulous. Don't worry about being softer than the songs today. Everything is so damn over-compressed. This is a bit like someone whispering in your ear from days gone by, more a memory than a thing happening right in front of you. Adds to the ghostly quality. Loved it. Great job mastering, performing, writing.

Beautiful &mdash 04/03/08 - 11:15:55 PM
Controlled, authentic tune played perfectly to my taste. Love the way you use the lap steel.

You have a really special style Jim, and I think it's because everything you do is so carefully considered and you seem so in control on your songs. Yet, this doesn't get in the way of the organic sound you get.

Beautifully produced as usual. We have a national radio station (called, rather creatively, "Radio National") which has a guy called Lucky Oceans (once a member of Asleep At The Wheel) doing a great program called "Daily Planet" - your music would definitely get a play there.

Humble bows Jim!
Neil

I just want to go out and chop down a tree. Great vocal, great guitar, and that poetry - all great. To hear this is to love it. Warm mix and performance. I was wondering how you got such pro audio quality then I read the notes. You aren't messing around.
