Description:
Violine - Björn
Guitar - Björna
Guitar - Johannes

This thing has no fixed form because it is made up on the fly. We have the typical swedish inclination of being afraid of being proud (it's often considered an ugly thing here). But we want to say it anyway. All three of us are really happy and amazed at this constellation. The sensitive docility of these guys is a gift. One of us starts something, and the others are right on. This tune is an example of what can happen out of the air.

Voices you hear are Curry and Björna giving chord suggestions and other verbal hints and incitement on the fly. You can also occationally hear rumble from floor vibrations that goes into the mics because we have no arrangement to damp them.

I strongly recommend to try it with headphones!
It is recorded straight off with two microphones in the middle of us. In headphones it is like sitting in in Currys living room, right in the middle of it all.

Photo shows Björn; our emminent violinist, bassist, guitarist, mandolinist, singer - probably more...

Lyrics:
dm, A, dm, A, gm, D, gm, A .. etc (in swedish)

Hardware:
A violine
Two acoustic guitars
Two Golden Age Project R1 mics

I agree &mdash 04/01/08 - 05:50:34 PM
It is just as if I am sitting in Curry's living room, experiencing this very brilliant intuitive music session. I love the violin, and I did listen to it with headphones, reinforcing the effectiveness of panning to achieve that living room feel. Simply brilliant!

Very Good &mdash 04/01/08 - 06:21:01 PM
I like the spontaneity of it. Personally, I think the chord suggestions detract from it, and it would be nice to see them edited out, or a second recording without, but I an nitpicking. (only my personal opinion, others may like it. I understand that it may have been necessary as you jammed)

Look forward to more!

Yes. Seems like a good idea. So far we have never been going back to any of our old jams to play them again.. it is still so new everything .. we keep coming up with new things all the time.

I'm Disappointed... &mdash 04/01/08 - 09:34:25 PM
I thought you had gotten tatooed and joined a heavy metal band, Johannes. LOL

I enjoyed this very much and am happy for you. It sounds like you have a lot of interesting musical possibilities to explore with this lineup. Best of luck to you.

BTW... is that sweatshirt the pictured Bjorg is wearing a Baldwin-Wallace shirt? B-W is a university not far from me. ;)

Björn here
The T-shirt I bought when I was with a Gospelchoir from Sweden in Cleveland 2 years ago. And we were at the Baldwin-Wallace Collage and did a consert there.
And we also got T-shirts from their Basketball Team.
It was great fun being there.

it's marvelous, gentlemen - and i got to sit in Johannes' living room - or so i felt, listening. how wonderful to have a violin!! "typical swedish inclination of being afraid of being proud (it's often considered an ugly thing here)" - you have that THERE, too??? then we are universally united!
wonderful to hear you guys unfold your sounds. beautifully done!

Yes Anne! &mdash 04/02/08 - 02:18:06 PM
Yes! You heard it perfectly right: "what chord is that?" (said in Swedish "vilket ackord är det där?"). Your ear is a good picup!

But really .. I thought Americans were those who really KNOW how to be proud.. I don't think of conceit then .. but there is a more happy generous form of being proud ..

Oh, this is just wonderful. I really do feel as though I'm right there and it's perhaps, just after dinner and we're all sitting around your living room and you've all taken out your instruments while we have coffee and wine.

If I were really there I would sing along with your beautiful music. I've had a lovely time improvising here at my computer. It was absolutely irresistible.

You'd be so welcome .. If we were having Swedish meatballs, what kind of wine would you want .. ?

Hmm &mdash 04/05/08 - 02:58:38 AM
Probably a nice Merlot. I've been drinking a lot of Layer Cake Shiraz lately, but I think it would overpower the meatballs. I'm a big fan of lingonberry juice, honestly. A nice glass of that would make me just as happy!

Thank you, well I remember I some place said (and I still mean it) that a very special bond is developed with people I've made music together with. If enough people had the chance to try it I think there would be much less war and distrust.

Peace and Love

This is what I miss &mdash 04/03/08 - 07:27:51 PM
When I was young, we used to do this sort of thing (nowhere near as well I must add!) on a regular basis, and I have only just started back in with a large group of musicians who play traditional celtic tunes (mainly) on very rare occasions as yet. Unfortunately it'll take a while to get my chops up to their standard.

I love the sound of Bjorn's fiddle, and the overall quality of the recording is quite amazing. I love the organic feel to this - like watching a plant grow.

Love it, congratulations!!

Thank you Neil. Nice to hear about your experience. I guess it is diffficult for non musicians that never had the experience, to understand the joy of jamming with a well working group. It is very very special. Hope to be able to have a jam with you some day!

Oh gosh... &mdash 04/06/08 - 08:55:49 AM
This does take me back... I won't claim to have done this sort of thing with people who have your evident chops, but hanging out in a circle of chairs making music up on the fly is just the coolest... Improvising on a chosen tune is a lot of fun, but going beyond that and starting from nothing...well, it either ends up laughably terrible, or it gets magical...

So you guys got magic, and it seems as if you have a good, deep well of magic to dip into between the three of you...

You are quite right: this sounds terrific in headphones. Your Golden Age mics once again acquit themselves very well. (Do you have them in an omni mode for this? The pick-up pattern sounds very full and natural and even.)

On top of the musical appreciation, I am also overjoyed that you seem to have found the musical outlet that you have wanted, and are so happy with it...

Thank you Ed. I want to first say to you what I said to jiguma, that I dig hearing about your jamming experiences in the past. Jamming is so special. It unifies people. I guess it is diffficult for non musicians that never had the experience, to understand the joy of jamming with a well working group.

Omni mode .. eh I really don't know what that is .. there are no settings on the mics, if that was whatt you asked. The mics have an 8 directional pattern. They take up quite a wide picture of the room. Both in front and back of them. So they are well suieted to gather around when playing. Only direction they don't take up is sideways so we avoid sitting there.

Hope to be able to have a jam with you some day!

Johannes

This is a gem to listen to for its live, two-mic balance, crystal-clear sound quality and sponteneity. The call and response is subtle and wonderful, and this natural feel just can't be achieved in the studio working track by track. So thank you.
