Description:
This is my arrangement of a traditional Irish tune (O'Carolan really) that I performed live recently called Planxty Irwin. Hope you like it. Solo guitar.

I do like it &mdash 04/02/08 - 03:25:04 PM
As with all your beautiful music, Peter, this is beautiful - the sound is lovely, and the touch is masterful. Your playing brings us into the state of mind you entered into to perform it, and that is quite a gift.
Thanks for continuing to bring your excellence to us at this site. I will enjoy having this on my iPod. Much appreciated. [ Reply to This ]

Okay, this is how this is... &mdash 04/02/08 - 09:21:34 PM
I come home late because I after work I went to the Taylor Road Show at The Minor Chord... Brain fried...
New thing up from Peter! Awesome. Gotta fave it... Oh man, it's one of my favorite pieces from Turloch O'Carolan... Gotta vote on it... and download it... Awesome, awesome, awesome...
And what was that other thing... yeah, there was another thing...
Oh yeah. I have to LISTEN TO IT.
And so now that's what I'm doing. But Peter, you are with Mark among those folks on this planet regarding whose musical works there's just no question or hesitation in my mind... If you're playin' it, I'm listening to it...
Heck, I listen to your seasonal CD when it's not even Christmas, that's how THAT is...
And now that I'm listening to it, I love the way you're treating the melody, the way you're making it play on the guitar, and the recording is really nice as well... As I said, it's a favorite tune, and you've done it proud...
Glad you're back. I was just wondering where ya'd gotten to...

Fantastic &mdash 04/02/08 - 11:47:27 PM
This is wonderful, this is the first example of Irish trad that I've seen on macJams and it couldn't be better.
I do some Irish fiddling and this inspires me to do some of that for my next post (if I can get it into presentable form that is)

O' Canada &mdash 04/07/08 - 11:28:57 AM
wasn't O'Canada a peer of O'Carolan? Glad you liked it, and I think you should post what you want!

Brilliant! &mdash 04/03/08 - 05:11:10 AM
Are you really John Renbourn? This is a superb piece of music. What tuning are you using - it doesn't sound like standard?
Wonderful stuff thanks for posting.

Thanks for the nice words - though JR might be a bit miffed at the comparison... I arranged this in double drop D (DADGBD). Glad you like it!

thanks for your comments! I have to say in return that "fantastic" is the word I'd use to describe your voice too! Makes me want to move to Rio to gig...

I did vary the melody a bit from the original by O'Carlolan, so if it's got any flaws it is my doing! Thanks for givin a listen!

sounds DADGAD-ish &mdash 04/03/08 - 06:08:28 PM
Nice playing, very alive. There's some extraneous noise, breathing sounds, maybe some sort of white noise in there from the room, but that's merely a technicality. This is a very real sounding recording of some extremely tasty guitar playing. [ Reply to This ]
Jim &mdash 04/07/08 - 11:10:53 AM
the noise is just the typical audience stuff at a beginning of a concert I think. I'm glad you can hear the music through it all though! Thanks,

like the new age fingerpicking. The depth of the celtic sounds in fun and the quality is very nice to hear. Like the trills, very melodic!
Way to go, and a very nice addition to Mj. [ Reply to This ]

Lovely playing &mdash 04/07/08 - 06:20:54 PM
A most relaxing start to my day Peter. I'm really interested in what you use to get such a wonderful recording - I assume it's miced, but is it one or two? What sort of mics etc?
Very classy post!
Thanks,

I have a Highlander undersaddle and internal mic that's blended and sent to the board. There is also a C1000 mic aimed at the upper fretboard and sent to the board. And the two Board tracks are then mixed and sent direct to 2 tracks of the Live program. What you're hearing is the mp3 reduction of the original 16bit 44.1k file.
That's the typical live performance setup I have... especially when I use my regular sound tech. And that's probably the most important thing - he has great ears!

Yay! &mdash 04/08/08 - 10:03:10 AM
A New Janson post! You have such a distinct sound to your playing, I can recognize it instantly. You mentioned that you took some melodic deviations from the original, it shows and only makes it better.
I hope we don't have to wait over a year for the next one, your work is gold!

I love trad celtic tunes. Nicely played sir. O'Carolan was one of the masters! I tried to teach myself "O'Carolan's Welcome" on the mandolin but gave up. I just don't have the skills yet. Kudos to you for a job well done!
