Description:
I had a little trouble deciding what genre this song fits into. I guess folk rock is close but I'm not sure. I guess genres are understandably needed in some ways, but it's hard for me to think of music and songs as being anything other than good or bad. With that said I hope you like this song. Feel free to comment and give advice, I have thick skin lol and I believe in the value of perspective and opinion.

Hardware:
Stand alone Zoom MRS 1608 16 track, Phil electric guitar, Garrison G50 CE acoustic, Roland GW7 workstation (cello)

Genre doesn't matter &mdash 04/03/08 - 09:10:11 AM
to me personally! I think it fits AR though!

Sweet song!

I like it but in my headphones it sounded pretty much mixed to the middle. I think it would sound great if you pushed the guitar left a little and your vocal slightly right. The drums seem spread ok.

That is just my opinion!

Thanks Mark I will try that when I remix it for mastering.. Cheers

Smooth tune &mdash 04/04/08 - 12:32:36 AM
Can't put my finger on it but reminds me of another tune that used to ride the FM airwaves. That's not a bad thing mind you.Like the vocal work and the mouth organ accents. The only issue I have is the stiff drum feel and the off beat drum hits at the end of the verses,"Even if we had it all".All around a nice easy goin' post. Thanks for sharing.

This was actually my first attempt at recording digitally and I used the Zoom to create a drum line. I understand what you are sharing with me and hopefully will be able to have a live drummer on the remix Thanks for the advice and kind words.

Slowhand &mdash 04/04/08 - 09:17:13 AM
This reminds me of the songs from Clapton's "Slowhand" album. Your vox and the effect on it sounds very similar to that genre. Very cool. Look forward to listening to your other material. Cheers

Very nice song &mdash 04/05/08 - 11:18:36 PM
I like the lyrics, and i love the vocal on this - a nice, warm sound, filled with expressiveness in a laid-back style. Some nice guitar on there too. I love the sound from the acoustic - very clear and crisp. I second Mark's comment about the panning - a little width in the phones would be nice. I also think the drums are a weak point, a little low in the mix, and there are some discordant snare hits in there to my ears. However, I stress that these are nits I'm picking here. It's a great song and once you have that, you're golden! Glad I stopped by. Nicely done. Peace.

great &mdash 05/01/08 - 07:43:47 AM
Excellent track! Harmonica is such a nice touch.
I think your voice has a lot of warmth and if I was forced to nit pick I'd say it had just a bit too much effect applied - it's down to personal taste but a rich voice like yours doesn't need much doing to it.
Enjoyed listening to this alot so thanks for posting!

Hmmmm .... &mdash 05/11/08 - 02:48:36 AM
.. nice tune .. I might have notched the VOL some .... maybe thats my late night listening here .. but I always like the volume LOUD .... vocals could have been clarified slightly (as mentioned earlier) cause (and I have the same problem when mixing) ... without the benefit of printed lyrics .... hard to follow .. and I like to read or hear the lyrics ... there was a slight muffling there ... (who am I to speak to this tho .. cause I am the overuse of reverb Queen on MJs) .... but the tune is good ... solid .. and with a little tweak on the VOX could be gold !!!! we need to hear those words !!!!

Good song &mdash 05/21/08 - 08:54:08 PM
I really enjoyed your vocal, and the song really worked for me.

Now, as you were asking for some helpful advice ..... Some areas already mentioned which I'd agree with are: that you could probably set up the soundstage better with a little imaginative placement of vocals and guitars; the drum track is definitely a weak point, both in volume in the mix and in some pretty dodgy timing in places - some of those crashes are significantly out.

I can't hear a bass track for much of the song - maybe something a little stronger in that department would be a good idea.

I really do like this, just think it could be much better. Harmonica playing is just perfect.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Great song &mdash 05/27/08 - 07:48:04 PM
really well put together. At the risk of repeating myself I think this also reminds me of Jethro Tull at about the time they did Minstrel in the Gallery, - it's got to be the voice though the song is also typical of what they were doing around that time.

Well done Guy, very enjoyable - one suggestion, - I think it might be a good idea to take a little bit of bass off your voice, but only a little or you'll lose the richness. That's just my own opinion though.

John.

Nice folky song Guy &mdash 07/04/08 - 12:45:03 AM
Like what I hear, and you voice is so rich on this.

About that, one thing I would do is to use the graphic EQ on the vocal to bring up the 1k and 1.25k frequency maybe 1 or 2db to add a little clarity to the vocal. It's won't affect the richness of you voice but it will make it a little easier to understand the lyrics.

Love the harmonic and the rhythm guitar, which are both clean and pristine sounding.

Nice song Guy, and again, your vocal is so mellow.

Great job

Ed

Thanks Ed &mdash 07/05/08 - 12:59:19 AM
I don't check the old ones often and it's nice to find new comments especially ones with solid sound advice. I actually pulled that frequency almost out of the whole mix I was getting a hum and now understand it to be my monitors which will have to go, and I will spend some money on the next ones lol. These are Ok if I keep the volume down so they will do for now.
