Description:
Recorded in black and white.-

A song about the cold war, when the civil defence were always telling us what to do if they dropped one of these things on us, like you'd have a chance!!! Of course by the late fifties early sixties they had the H bomb as well which I am told was 100 times bigger than the A bomb.

This is a blues but the left hand shifts between a sort of boogie woogie bass to a stride or rag pattern so it's a bit of a mongrel. It was just a filler/throw away song but got popular when it was played on local gigs, even had requests for it!

Lyrics:
Atom Bomb Blues by woofer3

written by Woofer 3

Someone paid the money,& someone let 'em in,
Someone lied a little yeh & now were in a spin,
Don't know what they're doin'
We can't go on like this,oh no,
And it goes with out saying, I got the A Bomb Blues,

The temperature is rising & there's something in the air.
The temperature is rising & we're suddenly aware,
We're standing in the frontline,
There's nothing we can do -oh no,
And it goes without saying I got the A Bomb Blues,

Break.

Rosenberg got heated sitting in the chair,
Ethel got the blame as well & no one seemed to care,
Whether she was guilty,
We never did find out,- oh no !
And I'm telling you now, I got the A Bomb Blues,

Build myself a shelter, somewhere I can hide,
Build myself a shelter, gonna stay inside.
You can feel the tension,
It's everywhere you go
And it goes without saying,I got the A Bomb Blues.

Break outro

History revisted &mdash 04/03/08 - 07:43:36 AM
Wonderful Randy Newman feel. A moment in history immortalized. I love it when, like great folk music, lyrics take an event and give it a spin. I was just talking with some kids about how my generation thought about bombs in a much more personal way then current kids, who aren't afraid of them or consider them much in any way. Maybe you could put this on a kid's album: Politics for Pre-teens? We could use a teaching tool like that. Nice track.

I remember the Cuban crisis really well and remember thinking that this really was the end of it all. I just knew that old JF wasn't going to back down...I think you had to live through that period of uncertainty to fully appreciate it all. If it had kicked off there was no escape. They told us here you would have four minutes to prepare ! oh well that's ok then.

John.

Throw away ones that people like best. I'd put five bucks in your tip jar for this. I like the simplicity of your last couple because they highlight your vocals a bit more. I envy your piano skills, keep those hits coming.
Regards

I shall invite you &mdash 04/04/08 - 12:14:53 PM
to my next gig, in fact it's tonight in Cardiff! I actually used to play this one on gigs up to about a year ago. Mind you I'm not sure people knew what I was singing about.

Thanks for listening,

John

I remember seeing those &mdash 04/04/08 - 07:35:33 AM
old films where they told you to hide under the stairs.
Really enjoyable song John performed in a very skillful, talented and, as always, witty way.
Cheers
Len

I'm glad someone else - &mdash 04/04/08 - 12:31:27 PM
has seen those old public information films in B&W with a posh English voice telling you to fill the attic with earth and board up the windows on both sides, all in four minutes!!! What they didn't tell you was that after one of those things had gone off you wouldn't have a house leave alone a roof to store your earth in. - All so matter of fact as well, looking back there was a funny side to it I suppose. You know I can still hear that plummy voice after all those years.

Thanks for listening Len and for commenting,

John

As I remember it &mdash 04/04/08 - 01:23:51 PM
John, they used to show those films and then show a real atomic bomb going off and flattening everything, in contrast. Real food for thought.
Cheers
Len

lovely... &mdash 04/06/08 - 08:05:36 AM
nice keyboarding! I am jealous of proper musicians who can actually play their instruments! I can imagine this going down really well live - great lyrics too, reminds me of the early eighties when the whole of your life seemed tainted by imminent death...

-actually it's a very easy piece to play. I was doing a solo piano gig this week and did an instrumental version of this. It sounds a bit Joplinish with it's raggy sort of feel though this was unintentional as I'm not a very big fan of Scott Joplin.

Thank you for your comments,

John.

Woof, Woof &mdash 04/10/08 - 01:31:01 AM
No dog song here, all cool cats.

Great song and piano playing. I love your leads during the break. Great rhythm, too, not too fast, as we've talked about before.

Although good as is this would be great with some horns and a slide guitar.

Way to go woof.

I Forgot . . . &mdash 04/10/08 - 01:39:03 AM
A couple of years ago on our last trip to Merry Old I went to the government's bomb shelter that has been made into a museum. This was the place where the government would go in case of a nuclear attack. It's somewhere east near Chelmsford.

Quite an interesting place. I would say those who survived the blast would not survive the resulting stay in the shelter.

Talk about your atom bomb blues!

thank you Tim &mdash 04/10/08 - 10:46:30 AM
It was a strange time to live through, but there was nothing you could do about it, - if it happened it happened and that is the frame of mind you had to adopt. I did find the civil defense films of the time quite funny though, - like who did they think they were fooling.
