Description:
This is a whammy little jammy I had kickin’ around my hardrive for ages, then I dusted it off and asked Echroom to add some of his magic to it. Mostly played instruments, but a GB loop of two you might recognize as well. It started off as just a sketch but somehow made it into the drawing drawer, if you know what I mean. Steve ransacked a few of my life story bits and pieces to shape the lyrics, which are made poetically vague but artfully cool in his inimitable way. Hope you like.

Philip

Lyrics:
In The Stone
© 2008
Lyrics: Steve Craig, aka Echoroom
Music: Philip VanDusen, aka Racerat

I've never told this tale before
The secret stuff we keep inside
Went digging treasure for the Greeks
Rapping Bill Shakespearian rag
I been down, I came up fighting
A Victory 8 ball howling roar
I come round, I'll come round Friday
Schwinn Stringray daredevil for sure

You smell like
Summertime
taste like
Chocolate
I'm David
In the stone
Waiting for
Michaelangelo
Who are you (x4)
Something true
Some voodoo
Who are you

[ Yeah, you sit there on the train with your wet hair eating your little muffin getting’ wired for no reason wet and wild and lost and stupid loveless and lonely and scared to stop moving cuz all those things just might catch up with ya ]

You feel like
sunshine
Melt like
chocolate
You're Venus
In the marble
Waiting for
an artist
Who are you

[ I don’t know it seemed like silence full of answers a smile full of secrets a pocket full of fake friendship biting the hand that pays you a beat that devours and drives your thoughts away ]

Thanks Mr. G,
Glad you made it here first, beating Feter to the punch is impossible. I was just listening your song "What If" while I was running yesterday. Man I love that song. Thanks for the listen dude.

Darn... &mdash 04/05/08 - 07:44:51 PM
I was gonna come here first and beaten by FG!

I knew this a surefire winner upon seeing who the collaborating artists are. You really make a great team, Steve and Phil. Funky, edgy. modern. You could very well create another genre for this or a composite genre. Rock, funk, retro, alternative, europop.... Steve's vocal texture really sets the tone on all music he sings over, but the masterful instrumental play definitely powers it up several notches even... Thumbs up, guys!

Does the title refer to King Arthur's sword, or your stimulated state of mind when you created this song? ;-)

In the Stone &mdash 04/06/08 - 04:24:27 PM
Hey Leon,
The title refers to a sculpture that is not yet emerging from the stone. Michaelangelo has a series of sculptures that are in a hallway leading up to his famous sculpture "David" in Florence. They are called "the Prisoners" as they are unfinished and seem to be trapped, but in the process of emerging, from the stone. That's kind of where the lyrics are coming from I think, but Steve will have to weight in on that to be sure.

What it is &mdash 04/07/08 - 10:53:19 AM
I never like trying to explain my lyrics as i dont always understand them myself! Phil wrote his biog for the 'Who are you' thread, and I really wanted to incorporate it into a lyric (the song was originally called 'Who are you', but Phil came up with the inspired title).

So the intro is Phils biog; the song then is about how, when we meet members of the opposite sex, we (or maybe it's just me) give them our best side, and our most exciting life stories, to big ourselves up (and , ultimately, you know, fall in love and /or sleep with them).
So the chorus is about attraction and the thrill of discovering someone new.

The 'in the stone' comes from the idea that inside a block of marble, the form, the sculpture, is just waiting for the artist to release its beauty. So its a metaphor for how we create our own identity, and how we create our ideals of others (initial attraction creates a view of a person, but days/weeks/months later, that shine can wear off... the person hasn't changed, but your ideal of them has).

Does that make ANY sense?

Class dismissed!

Yup I was that Stringray kid. Livin' on wheelies and fishtails and seein how long I could make a skid trail with my slick tire. Buildin jumps and dreamin of a Orange Krate I saw in the Sears catalog.

and a card in the spokes....

Rock on boys! You two are certainly my first pick for the Dynamic Duo of MacJams. The Wacky Packages, as I know you two so well.

Glad to hear another really well written, well performed song from you. I was beginning to worry that Phil was too serious for this place and that Steve was MIA writing songs from Monte Carlo to Sri Lanka and back.

You guys write perfect songs for kids like us, huh Vic?

Now if I ever catch you boys in my yard again, I'm gonna have to call the authorities!

Hey 5,
Yeah, Stevie and I had to take a little break, me due to a new job and Steve due some horrific travel for his work. It's good to be back. Trying to get back in the swing. I have a new one I'll post soon that I did with Stacey I wrote to use as a soundtrack to a video I am doing for work. Stay tuned.

Thanks for not forgetting about us!

Art &mdash 04/06/08 - 05:23:05 PM
Thanks TW,
I know. Art analogies always seem to fall a little flat in songs, but I think Steve did an amazing job here with the lyrics---hmmm could it be cuz they're about moi? But seriously, I think they are secreted in a nice vague haze that keeps them interesting and of course Steve's vocals rise as always high above the fray.

I want to take this opportunity to tell you something I have been thinking about:

I have downloaded a lot of your stuff over the months and have recently taken up running. I created a MJ playlist that I listen to when I am out on the road. So I have gotten to spend some dedicated time over the past month to really listen, repetitively to your stuff. All I have to say is your are one of my MJ heroes. Your catalog and range of expression is completely inspiring. Thanks for gracing my page with your presence. I am humbled. Really.

Outstanding stuff &mdash 04/06/08 - 05:45:14 PM
This is great - terrific music and excellent, evocative lyrics. The beat is great - love the drums - and the bass is lovely, with a great sound and nicely minimal, something that I find hard to do! Singing outstanding - no surprise there. You knocked it out of the park again, Steve. Brilliant combination of talents. The sound is completely pro - a lovely mix with a great sheen. Very impressive. NIcely done to both of you. Kudos. Peace.

Crickets &mdash 04/07/08 - 03:19:43 AM
I can hear crickets on this one.
Lenny likes crickets... reminds him of summers in Nevada... airless plains.

The musical arrangement and production on this is truely pro. The vocal is truely Bowie.

Nice song.

...continue to be one of the best combined talents I've heard on MacJams... Either of you can do things great on your own, but something really cool happens when you get together...

I love the lyrics, love the singing, love the playing...

And I remember those 'Prisoners' sculptures... one of the very few times I've been out of the country...

This is great...

I dig the feel, the sound and the concept revealed In the Stone.

Of course if we all wait around for Michaelangelo, we'll remain blockheads. Hmm... maybe that explains a lot of things in this world. lol

At any rate, while not my typical musical fare, I like this work a lot for its persistent musicality amidst chaos and its insightful lyric.

Great collaboration, guys! ;)

Pretty Groovy, alright &mdash 04/07/08 - 05:07:04 PM
Great sound! Breezy, beautiful mix. Even those dark bits have enough room to not feel overbearing. Steve's vox are big....

One small criticism: that phone setting on the 'talk-y' vocal is perfect, but it sounds a little gimmicky on the bass at the beginning IMO.

Keep track of your keywords, too; they might prove to be an unbeatable source of song titles some rainy day. But, I think I'm going to steal "Chocolate Venus Voodoo Muffin" right now. Good God!!

We're all in the stone &mdash 04/09/08 - 01:04:50 AM
Such a great, creative song, so well delivered. I find this sound and intensity quite odd in the best way possible. It challenges me to go farther outside my own writing comfort zone, to allow my songs out of their stone. This is the equivalent of being inspiring, which I think is the best possible compliment.

Great work, great collab.

It's great to see a sketch develop to something as well rounded as this song. Great production. Vox up to the usual high standard, bass is particularly outstanding.

I like the talky parts, the phone sound is really well worked. I thought the song was much shorter than 3.26; doesn't seem that length (must have enjoyed it so much!).

This is what it's all about boys! Collab, collab, collab....

I hope that you'll hear this as a compliment when i say that I'm sitting here listening while thinking, if I had a r'dio station, I'd be playn' the fread outta dis one. Not a "top ten'r" station; I'm talkn' the kind of station where folks are tuned in to hear that something which moves parts of ya that ya didn't know, just how badly they needed to be stirred...

Fresh as all get out!

Everything just sounds and feels right!

Steve, this is my top choice of your vocal work. Great writing too!
