Description:
This started out as a backing track for a song in the style of the band Suicide (electro punk originators of the late 70's - a must listen). However - as I listened to the track repeatedly - I couldn't bring myself to sing over it - and really got into the way repetition invites the brain to find change where none exists. The basis of this track never changes once established about a minute in - but I find I hear different sounds and patterns anyway.
I hope I'm not a total narcissist and that you find something to enjoy in this also. It could be that like Narcissus - I'm captivated by my own reflection. Play loud or soft.

iMac G5, Alesis AirFX

Rinse and Repeat &mdash 04/05/08 - 11:50:56 PM
yeah, I see what you mean about hearing different sounds/patterns even when they're not actually there. When I started listening to this, I was thinking "well, this probably isn't really quite for me" - but then I couldn't hit the stop button, and then I didn't want it to end. Now if you've ever listened to anything of mine you know that I'm also quite into repetitions - totally different genre, but reps are reps - so maybe the part of my brain that likes to hear something over and over again met up with the part of your brain that likes the same thing. And it was beautiful! (lol) thanks [ Reply to This ]
I think repetition appeals &mdash 04/06/08 - 05:41:58 PM
to our basic desire for order and comfort in predictability. The breath - the heartbeat - basic rhythms. [ Reply to This ]
trippy &mdash 04/06/08 - 01:37:42 AM
Yeah - nothing special &mdash 04/06/08 - 05:43:01 PM
but something that I liked in its simplicity. Glad you could get into it. [ Reply to This ]

As a fan of the band (and Vega) I could'nt stay insensible to this. Loved it. [ Reply to This ]

Suicide was an amazing act. I saw Vega perform recently and he was as good and strange as ever. His accompanist ( a woman - not Martin Rev) played an ipod with a Kaos Pad and an Air FX. [ Reply to This ]

Cagey &mdash 04/06/08 - 05:46:59 PM
Very John Cagey me-thinks. I agree that the mind is always one to try to make sense, fill in the gaps, find patterns where none exist. I feel your pain and torment when it comes to the 'to song over this cool track, or not to sing over this cool track" conundrum. Glad you left it as is as a dense study in pattern. I wish it went on for about 15 minutes. It would be a great song to do yoga by.

After repeated listening I came to the same &mdash 04/06/08 - 05:51:52 PM
conclusion - that it works well for about 15 minutes - but thought that that was a lot to ask here. Just let it repeat. [ Reply to This ]
It... &mdash 04/06/08 - 10:10:16 PM
...hypnotizes...and anesthesizes...all at the same time. Here is performance art that can't be ignored...or escaped. So to me, the question is as elemental as the art: why?
(Not meaning any disrespect whatsoever. At the end of the day, you made me think.)
Peace.

Very interesting question you pose - &mdash 04/07/08 - 09:37:29 AM
I guess the first answer could be why not? But are you asking why it works - or why it exists? It exists to provide pleasure - or at least to stimulate thought or some other area of the brain - as I assume all music and art does. Why it works is open to discussion - as is whether it works at all. Thanks for commenting - it's always nice hearing from you. [ Reply to This ]
Hey! &mdash 04/08/08 - 04:18:29 PM
Sounds like you might have been channeling Electro Estate! Very unusual, and extrememly trippy. Kind of pulls one in......
I like the way you mixed the guitars in the distance...

nice of you to stop by and comment. Sorry to say that no guitars were used here - just some tweaked up noise and a little electric piano. Now if I could only get my guitar to sound like that. [ Reply to This ]

that melodic metallic repeating noise burst is way cool ! ! ! !
this effect reminds me very much of listening to tight loops of spoken words. first you hear some syllables, then your mind locks in on some detail and it slowly unfolds into a new set of syllables... and it keeps turning around and around into other pseudo-words... of course it's all in your head - but then it all is in your head - all the time anyway, isn't it?
i see what you mean about the mirror.
very cool - you've inspired me to try something along these lines.

By George you've got it! &mdash 04/08/08 - 09:04:32 PM
But don't worry - it'll wear off in a few days. I started hearing the voices myself and I know what's there - and it's nothing like voices.
Glad you like the metallic shhh metronome. That was actually the hardest part to get right. It's made up of about six little bits of white noise from different sources like cymbals, wind, static etc. - all put together and tweaked to sound like steam I guess. There's a certain percussive sound that Suicide had that was some early drum machine played through pedals - that's what I was going for originally. [ Reply to This ]

Really felt that I was on a old steam train ride (not that I have ever been on one - I think).
I was hearing voices too - very interesting and definitely enjoyable.

This could be track one, &mdash 04/14/08 - 11:43:42 PM
or track 14, on a Pan Sonic album. This music just gives the imagination space to play solos all over the place.
Cool bit of psychological programming; I have an inexplicable urge to by hot dogs now . . . .
