Description:
Too much is too much
Lyrics:
Young Timmy was born in a house, not a home
He was raised by his auntie and the Reverend Jerome
They took in his Ma on the night that she died
And the last thing she heard was a baby’s first cry
Now the Reverend Jerome had the Lord in his home
And so he liked to beat the devil from young Timmy’s bones
Cause he never gave thanks, only prayer-meetin’ pranks
He was too much like his father, that gambler from the plains
And with the dollars from hell that he’s earnin’
It’s a shame what the kid here is learnin’
Now Stella was fair, and her long golden hair
Was often mentioned in sermons Jerome would prepare
And her brothers would cuss after drinkin’ too much
And they’d wave their guns at Heaven and shoot ‘em in the air
With the thunder of gun powder burnin’
It’s a shame what the kid here is learnin’
Now the reverend knelt down when the dance came to town
And the boy and his Stella were not to be found
He went to pacin’ the floor, glarin’ hard at the door
Thou shalt not love a harlot, it’s a sin before the Lord
With her teasin’ and leavin’ him yearnin’
It’s a shame what the kid here is learnin’
It’s a shame what the kid here is learnin’

.. for the opening guitars alone, but the vocals and words are also really good. Love the harmonies. A little reminiscent of The Band doing Blind Willie McTell - a good thing in my book.
A very enjoyable listen

I always hope to catch your ear, but I must confess, whenever I delve into the realm of harmonies, I worry what the Sisters, those virtuosos of harmony, might think. Your comments are gratifying. Thanks for listening. Terry [ Reply to This ]
real nice folk-writing &mdash 04/07/08 - 11:29:25 AM
Hey Terry, what a great piece of music, wonderfully performed and sung. The story in the lyrics is well written and paced, though there are a couple of lines that are a little bunched-up with syllables, but you sang them with conviction and flair, and the song just flowed wonderfully. Did I mention the super singing and guitar playing?

...for the generous comments. Love your work! Yes, as a storyteller I sometimes become committed to certain phrasings, and struggle with making them fit in the established musical cadence. That struggle shows here in several places, but glad the "conviction and flair" pulled them through. Thanks again. Terry [ Reply to This ]
Awesome coffeehouse &mdash 04/07/08 - 08:17:55 PM
Hey Thanks Boss &mdash 04/07/08 - 09:52:27 PM
Very insightful! This song has sold several cups of coffee at one of my favorite hangouts. I usually play a six, but the twelve is what I wrote it on, and just had to use it on this cut. Thanks for the kind words. Terry [ Reply to This ]

Music from Jerome's house &mdash 04/09/08 - 12:51:41 AM
What a fine job you've done with this song all around. Very well written, played, and sung. You have much to be proud of here with this compelling story. Everything seems just right.
If I were in the studio when you mixed it I would have suggested removing the unison doubling of the vocal, because I think your voice is so appropriate for the song that it doesn't require doubling. This would also add to the effectiveness of the harmony when it comes in. But the song works so very well as it is that this is not important. Congratulations. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks futz &mdash 04/10/08 - 09:15:02 PM
And you read my mind on the doubling. A friend of mine employs it all the time, and I often take up other's habits. But the harmonies did lose their effect in this take, and I think you got it right as to why. I will correct this, and thanks. [ Reply to This ]

I thought the last tune was one of your best, now I hear this gem.
And going from such different styles. Wow!

Very cool guitar work here - a lovely sound and lovely playing. Nice vocal too - I love the harmonies. Great song, with some excellent memorable lines ("He went to pacin%u2019 the floor, glarin%u2019 hard at the door - great line!) and a terrific performance. Nicely done. Kudos. Peace. I listened to your music and am blown away! And I'm encouraged greatly by your comments on the delivery and instrumental. I listened to you, and thought "this guy's living out my fantasies!" And "dang it" (for lack of a better word), "I know he's having fun!"
Thanks again. Terry [ Reply to This ]

I do enjoy playing it, and playing live has produced some positive feedback. I wasn't entirely happy with this recording, and will probably keep it more raw on the re-do. Thanks again. Terry [ Reply to This ]
... &mdash 04/18/08 - 09:53:18 AM
some of the best songs are the hardest to record but come out so awsome live. there is some raw energy that is almost impossible to reproduce on a record. im just now learning to really get some of the same feeling into a recording that's still decently produced. would be nice to hear this live. Guitars &mdash 04/17/08 - 08:38:16 AM
Guitars are great and your words are so good. Telling a story through music. I don't like the voice doubled during the verses, I think your voice could stand alone. Dare I criticize on MacJams?
Love your song, anyway.
Great stuff.

Criticism is easy to take when it verifies your suspicions. The doubling bothered me too. Thanks for the accolades and advice. I welcome them both. Terry [ Reply to This ]

Glad you like/love what I did here. One of those troubled and quirky families, I guess. I'm sure Timmy made it through his turbulent childhood. Thanks for tuning in. Terry (Glad you liked the guitar) [ Reply to This ]
How did I miss this one?? &mdash 05/21/08 - 06:41:38 AM
Amazing guitar, lyrics and vocals. Wow. Too bad Reverend Jerome didn't actually have the Lord in his home; it's scary what some people do in the name of God. This was a chilling look into this man's psyche. I'm glad Timmy and Stella escaped. What a great storyteller you are! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Roxy &mdash 06/18/08 - 11:56:33 PM
This is from a series of religious hypocrisy pictures (musical pictures). Don't know where they came from. Never lost my faith in God or man. I simply open my eyes in the morning, and take notes. Good and bad, it's a wonderful world! Thanks for tuning in. Terry [ Reply to This ]
