Description:
Formerly Electric Pop Instrumental. Many Thanks to Brian D for his additions.

Lyrics:
see the man with his hat pulled down
he's a player on the business side of town
he drives a flashy car
he's a winner with the folks down at the bar

but he's a sad sad man....

see the woman with the high heels on
she's the one they never set their gaze upon
she's a working girl
you gotta open up the shell to see the pearl

but she's a sad sad girl....

then one day they met upon the street
they came together and at last they felt complete
it didn't take too long
now they're together and they sing a happy song

they sing a happy song.......

Holy Shit &mdash 04/06/08 - 11:32:45 PM
My mind has been officially blown. I could listen to this for hours. The music was absolutely perfect from start to finish. Those vocals were great, too. I especially love (Including the vocal performance) the line "you gotta open up the shell to see the pearl".

Wow.

Excellent! &mdash 04/06/08 - 11:46:02 PM
This should be a great big hit! It's so clever, the juxtaposition between "sad, sad" and the happy music...then comes the happy ending. I played around with a vocal on this myself this morning, didn't really get too far, but Brian hit this one out of the park. LOVED IT!

came out great! It sounds like the vocals and the song were made for each other. I listened to the original but didn't really hear this coming.
Great job to the both of you on this collab. This is what it's all about.

simply amazing!!! &mdash 04/07/08 - 07:05:34 AM
Brian always blows me away and if anyone could make magic seem so easy, it would be Brian!!! What an incredible job to take something and add his words and voice and turn it into this wonderful uplifting song. Kudos to Paper Angel for the great melody to begin with, which I really enjoyed. I just cannot say enough about this. Fantastic collab, great song!

Great Pop Writing! &mdash 04/07/08 - 09:31:13 AM
This is an excellent piece of pop writing. It's also kind of Weezerish! Great collaboration!! I hope to hear more from you two in the future!

happy song &mdash 04/07/08 - 09:48:48 AM
Brilliant pyschedelic pop. The bass lines and backing vocals (which are so uplifting) remind of The Electric Light Orchestra at their best. The telephone bit really sounds like ELO (not a critisism in any way).
Every note a happy song. Recoding and mixing very polished. It's an automatic favourite.

Good Old-Time Pop &mdash 04/07/08 - 09:53:59 AM
Nice job by Taylor on the good-time musical bed and Brian completes the vision with a pithy, nutshell romance lyric, sung pleasantly and pleasingly.

While it ends up sounding more like The Buggles than The Beach Boys that Taylor had first envisaged, it's still a wonderful pop gem --- and probably better for it.

Nicely done, lads! ;)

thoughts from the bull... &mdash 04/07/08 - 10:19:04 AM
after comparing the original instrumental piece you had
posted prior to the completed arrangement here, I have
realized that the "story" being told here is really
nothing new. In fact, it's fairly clich and has been
a theme of love songs/stories forever.

however, the history of this piece alone makes this more
remarkable than many songs of its ilk; the fact that you
provided a musical landscape that had been so eloquently
staged, allowed the vocal performance to be dropped in
without much more than a thought. anyone could have
come along and dropped in a vocal performance to this
piece and it would have likely worked.

however, again, just anyone could not, likely, have
delivered such a brilliantly rendered performance as
the one given here. the pace, timing, and balance of
the wording with the music is, as others have said,
just perfect! it's a case where, even though the story
may be slightly of clich origins, it is made completely
fresh and compelling through the intensity and confidence
of the final delivery of the piece as a whole.

this song gives true credence to the term "collaboration."

whomever was involved in the production of this song
should be truly proud of a MacJams gem that deserves
every ounce of attention it gets.

sorry to be so long-winded. it's a really good track.

thank you for sharing your talents!

excellent work on all counts... &mdash 04/07/08 - 10:37:17 AM
I adore the melody/harmonies here, has light hints of old ELO/Queen/Beatles, but really stands out on its own as a unique piece. Absolutely love the compactly written well-fitting lyrics, and the singing and sung chorus-harmonies are great. I have a minor critique (as always), that the constant banging drum-beat could be softened or varied (in volume) a bit, it got a little repetitive. But overall, awesome song. Glad you mentioned it in the fora!

WOW!!! &mdash 04/07/08 - 03:04:22 PM
This perfect!

The song has a wonderful not to strength motown beat and the voice is simply great.

Sounds a little bit like ELO, but it has its own style and mood.

Very well done,

Thanks for sharing!

Faved and downloaded!

Blur goes pop! &mdash 04/07/08 - 04:25:49 PM
Great pop song - lyrically and melodically reminiscent (to me at least) of Blur.

So am I to understand that Brian D did the vocal and lyrics?

The vocal was sheer class, and sounds like it was the inspiration behind the music rather than the other way around.

Top song!

this captures the Beach Boys, SoCal pop, Ben Folds, McCartney, Costello, it covers them all. Great collab.

The many elements of this song work so well &mdash 04/08/08 - 08:16:08 AM
Where to start - the melody, lyrics, and singing; instrumentals, placement of the backing vocals, high quality of the mix; and of course the overall feel with the tempo contrasting the theme of the first two stanzas.

Great collab!

Thanks for sharing,
Doug

love the ending, enjoy the bringing back of an oldies type tune. So creative to do that and actually capture the professionalism of it.
Amazing the great tunes on this site. And this is one of em. From the fun and important words, the background singing, the soft rock infectious pop feel and the list goes on.

I already sent you a note so I'll keep it short except to say: Incredibly powerful writing, performance and studio command. I'll be listening to your music a lot; and that you're at the top to top of my list.
