Description:
This is an improvisation. I just turned on GB, picked up my ukulele and started strumming and singing. I'm not all that proficient on the uke yet, so I used the few chords I know (and blew it a few times, but I don't care) and let the music grow out of them.
I've figured out the lyrics, for those who are interested, and transcribed them below.
Lyrics:
There are places
That you don't want to go
There are spaces
In the mind you don't want to know
And yet I go
Why I don't know
There are memories
Of things that you've done you wish you hadn't
There are places
In the mind you don't want to see
But you do
But you do
But you do
I don't know why
I can't be happy
Without you
I just know the pain
The pain of separation
The pain of separation
And doubt
Oh, so much doubt
So much hatred
For all the shame
But I can't
Can't stop waiting
For my life
To be free of pain
Free of pain

The Uke &mdash 04/10/08 - 10:26:18 AM
is an interesting instrument. I had one way back in the late 60's and learned a few songs on it. No idea where it went.
Improv stuff is often great and this is very nice! [ Reply to This ]

Free of Pain &mdash 04/10/08 - 11:02:28 AM
so - you just made these words up while you went along? OK, that blows my mind. That uke is becoming part of you! Great song - thanks [ Reply to This ]
Me and my uke &mdash 04/11/08 - 05:31:47 AM
Thank you, Karen. I didn't know what I was going to sing, just that I had a lot inside that wanted to come out. The song just grew from that emotion. After I finished recording, I thought about going back and writing lyrics but decided in the end that it would have lost the immediacy and power of the improvisation. [ Reply to This ]
Very nice. &mdash 04/10/08 - 03:34:11 PM
I have a uke as well and I only know a few chords as yet.
I love your singing and this song is lovely. And the few chords you do
know sound cool to me. Cheers.
Peace Dee. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you, Dee, and good luck learning the uke. I'm working on it, but like all instruments, it takes time. [ Reply to This ]
I can hear... &mdash 04/11/08 - 12:17:50 AM
the late great Jeff Buckley here on a ukulele.Ever heard of him?If not you are the best impression of him I think I've ever heard, not only vocally but also in songcrafting and songwriting.Improvisation, just picked it up and started strummin'.......Seriously?
Mr.Buckley would himself be speechless!

Thank you, Godchaser. I hate to admit it, but I'd never heard of Jeff Buckley, so I looked him up on youtube. He did a great cover of Hellelujah (though he played the electric guitar, not the uke, on the version I saw). I appreciate the comparison, though, because I thought Buckley's performance was brilliant. The truth is I don't play the uke well enough to be influenced by anything more than a chord chart and the song, well, that just came straight from the heart. [ Reply to This ]

improvising is fun. i could have made a ton of albums from me just playing and singing whatever. lyrics are pretty they have an almost dark and mystical feel to them. one day i swear i will get out my uke and make a song. i owe it to caroline. [ Reply to This ]

found this very moving Joanna, partly through the lyrics and partly through the emotion in your voice and the simplicity of the Ukulele. I love your vocals and the sincerity in this song and your performance, regards M [ Reply to This ]
Thank you &mdash 04/11/08 - 03:01:14 PM
Thank you so much, Moviz. This is one of my rawest performances. Very bare and open. I appreciate you letting me know that it worked for you. The emotion was very real and the words came straight from that source. [ Reply to This ]
I LUV this .... &mdash 04/11/08 - 10:11:37 PM
... luv the bare bones stipped down sound of it .... the emotion is there in your singing too .... I believe this is how ALL great songs start out .... someone just strumming a few simple chords and working out a melody ... lyrics etc .... it would be interesting to hear a full out production of this one - I think the meat and potatos are definitely there ... I couldn't imagine why someone wouldn't want to add some gravey to this mix ! [ Reply to This ]
Thank you, Alannah &mdash 04/12/08 - 12:22:45 PM
I didn't really think about adding anything to this. It doesn't really have the structure (verses and choruses and a bridge) for a traditional song. Improv tends to be more free-flowing. I also played the uke while singing, so there's only one track. More production would need that to be separated so my bad uke playing could be eliminated. Still, you got me thinking.
Thank you for your comments, Alannah! [ Reply to This ]
