Slow down #1

Description
Recorded on tape many years ago, over twenty. It's pure fiction but has a sort of period charm about it. It's a story about a race between a Cadillac and a Vauxhall Viva which took place on the A48 just outside Cardiff, near Bonvilston, why shouldn't a Viva take on a Caddie ? It's not too bad once you get used to the low-fi sound and tape hiss but it is honest. - Real piano used on this, my mothers old grand.[1934] Hope you like it or it at least cheers you up.Recorded here at my home.

Lyrics
slow down [inspired by Flat Tyre by the Del Vikings]

written by woofer

1.Slow down you're moving too fast,
Let the jolly in the Cadillac past,
The speedo says 110,
Slow down ain't gonna tell you again,
Double declutch and drop into third,
Honey it's a Viva not a Thundebird.

2.Mile after mile, town after town,
Kept on waiting for a change in sound,
Bonvilston lay out ahead,
When the jolly overtook & almost wound up dead,
I closed my eyes and counted to ten,
When Honey hit the gas and powered up again.

[break]The Viva got hot and started to gain,
The Cadillac swerved into the inside lane,
It spluttered and shook for a minute or so,
Then it came to a halt & had to let us go.

3. No doubt he'll be back in the line,
Like a rocket coming up from behind,
Can't relax it's a terrible strain,
Doin' a hundred in the overtaking lane,
Taking advantage of a lucky break,
So keep on pushing while we're still on the make.

solos as verse.

[break]Ten miles on there was still no sign,
There was nothing in front of us and nothing behind,
I checked in the side mirror just to make sure,
When he came out of nowhere with his foot to the floor.

4. By now we're almost neck and neck,
The Viva overheated and was almost a wreck,
Shakin', smokin' starting to flag.
The jolly must have thought he had us in the bag,
But just when I thought we were out of luck,
He lost his control and hit the front of a truck,

Slow down....

This is great!
You are a massive talent John. Great song - definite Lonnie Donigan (but more jazzy) vibe. I defy anyone not to move to this. Great lyrics too. Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

I'm disappointed ..
.. that this is pure fiction! While I haven't had the pleasure of driving a Vauxhall Viva, I did have the dubious pleasure of owning a Morris Marina in 1986 and driving it around Stockport ("up north", said with a Manchester accent). I guess there's some degree of similarity :)

Great sounding tune - excellent piano and a good storyline.

Nice post!

Still disappointed though ;)

Thank you Neil,
well I did have a viva like the one in the picture once and it had an 1100cc engine which wouldn't have pulled your hat off so I think you were probably better off with the Marina. I quite liked the look of the vivas but the mark one was the funniest as it was so small and they'd tried to make it look like it's American cousin the mighty Oldsmobile !! enough said.

oh Dee -
what a lovely comment, the best I've had I'm sure. This was recorded late one night after a gig. You know what it's like, you get in and can't sleep. I used to stay up til gone four most Saturday nights just messing with my old four track, and getting a bit drunk in the process!! Such fun, but I'm a good boy now.

Thank you Dee, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your kind words.

My Kind of Song
Another good song from the Woofer. Good harmonies, nice guitar, and of course, the piano is always on target.

I can listen to your stuff all day.

I love car type songs-
I remember having, - No money down, and - Jaguar and the Thunderbird, both by Chuck Berry. I thought it would ne funny to write a song like one of these only set in Wales and the subjects being one of the coolest cars on the planet competing with one of the uncoolest cars on the planet, and then the uncoolest one winning. How original ay !!!

Thanks for your comments. Always good to hear from you.
