hold me (1)prone to wander (1) ()
Description:
Ugh. I need to stop playing with this for awhile, I can't seem to get it where I want it. Any suggestions? I know it's busy, but I kinda like it that way. I think it's the mix that buggin' me... I don't know ...

Lyrics:
They say time waits for no one
they say hearts never lie
i feel the rising tide of changes
like a shadow across my mind

you know hearts
they can be hardened
hardened like an anvil against the blows
till there's nothin left to free them
only watch them growing cold

hold me
hold me close
never ever let me go
i'm prone to wander
i'm prone to wander

but there's a hope that can't be squandered
there's a love that does not die
it can't be bought or traded
but it's well within the reach
of every life

2 cents &mdash 04/12/08 - 06:02:09 PM
Nice song but if I had to nit pick I'd drop most of the back-ups in the middle section except for the higher (female?) ones and drop your main vocal back just a tad during that section. I'd put some reverb or delay on the lead because it just sounds up in the mix to me.

I think you're right, the song's fine, but the mix just isn't quite there yet. I'm no expert, but that's my 2 worth. :)

thanks for the listen &mdash 04/13/08 - 10:41:47 AM
sounds like good advice, I'll give it a go and see if that works.

Vibe &mdash 04/12/08 - 07:05:49 PM
I love the vibe of this Pab, the song, the instruments and the harmony too, tho' as Sudra says, there's something with the mix in the vocals that doesn't balance, but I'm no expert either...( I have my own mix probs LOL), regards M

hey Mo! &mdash 04/13/08 - 10:45:55 AM
thank you for the listen. The mix down is the hardest part for me too. I think I heard sting say once that albums are never finished they are just abandoned.
I couldn't agree more.

Groovy &mdash 04/12/08 - 07:14:28 PM
I love the way this burns, its a slow burn that gets hotter as it burns

I'm glad you like the tune, it's been a challenging one and has stretched my abilities. but that's a good thing.

I love it all. The soulful laid back vocals and the sultry bass & Drums. The harmonies were outstanding. Dug the solo

Prone to ponder &mdash 04/13/08 - 12:26:13 AM
As Feter stated I too agree this is superb. If I too were to ponder at all (in the spirit of love and respect)........after the intro bass groove I would pan in all the other 'musical' elements from the center out as opposed to hard left or right from the gitgo.A slower spreading out of insturments,if that makes sense.Regardless of my feeble opinions,I love this post from the first spark to the full burn!

now that's something I didn't think of. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks for the listen brother, I respect your opinion and appreciate your taking the time to critique.

I'm glad you like it. It has been pretty exciting finally hearing it outside of my head, but it needs something and I've been tinkering with it so much that I can't be objective any more. I think I'm hearing things that aren't there and not hearing things that are.

This is a great conundrum... &mdash 04/13/08 - 02:24:36 PM
...because, as you say, there's some bit or bits that isn't quite there yet, but most of it is quite nicely 'there yet' indeed...

I love the basic groove, and I love the beginning, probably right up to the first 'hold me' section...

I love the bare bones of the hold me section, too. I think there's some stuff that could be tinkered with there, as regards perhaps the compression and reverb and relative volumes of the different vocal parts...

I love that first clean solo, too...

It may be that this song needs to have 'versions'. You know, "the busy version" in which you just keep all the bits and don't worry about what fits with what... and the blues version a la Boz Scaggs, where it just grooves along and keeps that feel all through... and the rockier version that just gets crazy...

You might be able to get away with a shorter version, a simpler version, a folk version, a bluegrass version.... And I'm NOT kidding...

The mix and arrangement issues are all in the second half, to my ears... The ending bits sound all compressed and squashy... Still, I can understand you getting attached to all the good bits even if they're not quite fitting with one another...

I love it as a song. I can't wait to hear the two or three acoustic guitar and upright bass version...

Ed

Thanks Ej &mdash 04/14/08 - 06:36:14 PM
I was thinkin about your comments and I'm kinda liking the the acoustic version idea, it started out as a psuedo bossa when I first wrote it. I've been goin thru it in my head and I think a bluegrass version could work pretty well. I never would have thought of that. :>)
I'll get back to you on that. Thanks!

Damn &mdash 04/14/08 - 12:18:24 PM
I'd been wanting to say that from the first few notes but when that first lead solo of the "clean" guitar action went into play, I couldn't hold it back any longer. Also, as I was listening, I was thinking, I'll have to comment later, when I have the time. But, damn, again, you made me give it up, right here and now! Glad I don't wear panties...

Don't really wanna go too much into the details of my likings on this and will just leave you with, it's all good! From bottom, to top!

Great tune. Dion

well thank you Dion, &mdash 04/14/08 - 06:43:18 PM
I'm really glad you stopped by for a listen. I'm also glad that you like the song!
I've marked it in my journal, today was my first pantie comment! Yes!!
I love this place.

Loved it! &mdash 04/14/08 - 01:19:55 PM
You asked for comments on the mix so here goes

These are just observations and my view. They are a matter of taste and are neither right or wrong.

Rhythm guitar is a little hot for my taste but that first solo is something else

Vocal sits a little too upfront for me.

Backing vox - work better with the full band.

Having said all that I really like this and these are just a few comments as you asked for them :-)

Cheers

Dick

cool &mdash 04/14/08 - 06:47:49 PM
I appreciate your view. A couple of folks have mentioned the vocals being up front, and they are louder than I usually make them, so I think I'll monkey around with them and see what happens. Thanks for taking the time.

Nice guitar work. The vocals remind of crowded house or something.

I like this song. The harmonies are nice.

I absolutely &mdash 04/14/08 - 03:40:02 PM
love the first two thirds of this song. The mix and the vocals sound like perfection to me (real pro sounding), I love the groove and that guitar solo is to die for.
When it takes off, I wonder if it's too abrupt a change, goes from everything panned beautifully to all sounding more or less in the centre - especially the drums. It sounds like a totally different drummer entered the room.
I hope you don't mind me saying the above but I have listened about five times to this now and I really love it and have downloaded (thanks). It's just that you asked - having said that it's all a lot better than I could do.
Fantastic ending too.
Cheers
Len

I'm seriously very &mdash 04/14/08 - 06:58:47 PM
glad for the feedback len, even from a rock,
Very good ear! a different drummer did enter the room on that last section!
the first part is an apple motown drum loop and the second one is a drumcore loop from a guy named Zorro, unfortunately there's no midi file with that one so there's not much I can do with it. At least I don't think, but man what a groove that guy's got.

Hold Me &mdash 04/14/08 - 09:22:53 PM
well, you've gotten a lot of stellar feedback and advice here, and I think it's all good. Up with this part, back with that part, panning, etc. You could tweak this all kinds of ways and yes, it'll come out the other end a little cleaner than it is right now. BUT, just want to be sure you ALSO know that this is a GREAT song. It's got WONDERFUL harmonies, a terrific beat, and as has been previously stated, a great "burn". Congrats on this effort - if you remix, be sure to put up the results for all to enjoy!

hey man &mdash 04/15/08 - 09:47:33 PM
what a cool sound.
Nice build up to the vocal.
The layering of sounds is awesome.
Excellent lyric to boot.
Steely Dan-ish in the approach of the arrangment.
The guitar solo just slips in there real Becker like.
Your vocal is also Fagen like at times. Everthing is crisp & in it place.
Love the chorus!
Then the Rock part jumps and rears its head...nice change up....
cool very cool.

Epic &mdash 04/17/08 - 01:02:06 AM
I could see how you could get tired working on this, because its a big ambitious track. Another top notch araignement, I like your guitar soloing a lot, and excellent singing as usual. Im lame brained in the production part, I would only suggest doing it the way that pleases you because its your statement.

This is a great piece master Paul. I have to agree that in need some hard work on the mix especially the last part when the electric guitar enters. I love this a lot. Faved/Downloaded/Voted (10s). A masterpiece!

I'm just digging this tune on first listen &mdash 04/26/08 - 05:18:23 PM
and find little fault with it. Pretty mazing production and writing - and the guitar playing is incredible. I'll give it more thought on more listens. DL'd.

Nice mellow vocal &mdash 04/28/08 - 03:35:58 PM
If I had suggestions I'd make 'em but I can't think of any... yet even as I type it occurs to me that you could double up the lyric in the verse and make one of the harmonies a female vocal (if you have that facility) and totally rejig the solo so that it's sparse drums bass and lead with perhaps a wee touch of organ or something that sustains then before the chorus reprise have a couple o' bars with percussion n' bass line. Who knows, it's a good choon as it stands. Aw the best.
