Description:
Here's the deal. I was working on a song and when I stopped playback this sound appeared. The song I was working on had no orchestral instruments or electronic instruments - it was only DOD drum loops and real instrument recordings of bass and guitar. I disabled the tracks one by one and still this sound persisted - so then I ran cable from my line out to my usb interface - opened a basic track and pressed record. After seven minutes or so I pressed stop. Here it is. Any idea what happened?

A great phenomena &mdash 04/14/08 - 06:41:44 PM
I have had about same experience but I don't know what it is... I'll just use it in the song I was working on... It was like a big echo from one of the track I played on my keyboard... I'll had played a few notes from the beginning BUT the sound follow through the whole song.

Way too cool it is.

...ish! &mdash 04/14/08 - 11:57:42 PM
I think you've hit it close to the nose here...
Sounds like other instruments feeding into a synth module and or an effects module that has the decay set to infinite or as much sustain as possible.
Whatever the case may be it sure is groovy.
Very movie soundtrackish.

Sometimes drums played into an atmospheric synth sounds a little like this. But it goes on and evolves a little too much for me to believe that's all there is to it.

Maybe an Apple programmer put an Easter Egg in GarageBand?

The notes seem to be limited to a reasonable gamut. Too much so to be entirely random...

This sounds soooo familiar. I remember making something like this sometime somewhere in some life.

Too bad about the distortion. It would be perfect otherwise...

you were doing? I've had mystery noises but nothing that extravagant. It is too bad about the distortion that's a real cool composition, it would be great for a documentary about space or whales.

Not so sure of the key - &mdash 04/14/08 - 08:26:43 PM
There was no controlling the sound in any way as far as I could tell - the distortion is unfortunate but I think of it as cosmic static.

Has a neat 2001 space oddessey sound.

This is a wild guess, but possibly infinite delay. Sometimes i create hidden washes in some of my tunes that I have a couple presets on one of my pedal boards that create something along this line. But why your computer did it, who knows.

Play it backwards and see if there is a message from Mona Lisa or Sebastian Cabot Lodge in there. I am thinking you are the happy recipient of an oracle.

Is it possible you inadvertently had an iTunes music stream going? How about Real Audio, QuickTime, etc? Look in "recent files" in those apps.

Sounds like "Hearts of Space" from Sausilito, CA.

That's the funniest damn thing I've heard all week, and the mysterious sound is totally cool. I've had similar short bursts of reverb sound come through when I stop and then start a Logic track. It's like the reverb coding gets stuck in memory and won't clear until the song's time line actually plays out the reverb. I don't understand.

the sound is like someone on the page said- the ambient reverb from various cords stuck together and the source code can not recognize the stoping of the midi control playing the instrument. basically a glitch in garageband that i think is really cool (sometimes, unless you are working on a good track and it throws you off). sometimes it is caused by a band source connection between interfaces. sorry to send anonymous...my accounts kept getting hacked so i stopped signing up. have talked to simon about it already.

Reminds me of Philip Glass stuff.

I even liked the distort at 2.55 & 4.15 to the end. Sounds like 'they' are trying to ask for help to save the planet. The 'build' at 6.26 is scary and dramatic. Why do I really like this?

I've wanted just this thing since I played &mdash 04/15/08 - 09:08:32 AM
with a Buchla synth years ago and maneged to create infinitely evolving tones - but nothing this beautiful. Is there a rig/plugin that can do this? I've been thinking about buying an electronic Tambura that's used to practice sitar and tabla.
here's a link http://www.radelindia.com/User_Products_QuickView.aspx

but I figure there must be a software version somewhere.

Thanks for taking an interest in this track.

Soft-synth tambura, &mdash 04/20/08 - 11:15:08 AM
Bud, I think you could get a good tambura sound out of a Frequency Modulator synth, if you played with it to get the over-tones of the root note in the right places. Logic has a good FM synth, but I there must be others out there that cost less than the price of Logic.

Happy hunting,

Wow! &mdash 04/15/08 - 11:30:18 AM

.. I had that happen .. something midi control related .. some duff info getting interpreted as midi .. but never sounded this good .. but then again .. I might not have as good things connected up via midi ..there is panning going on too.. there is moments of distorted passion .. really pretty darn good... nice variations too! :o)

Perhaps there is some Apple code secretly neural netting all music you do .. and 'composing' on the fly...based on your compositions .. dun dun daahhh..:o)

Incredibly new-age, spacey and atmospheric. Heck I couldn't write something this good intentionally.

Kudos to random sw bugs! We can cite this the next time
GB decides to evaporate the last 3 hrs of work etc ..;o)

Hey Bud, I think that this is that Bach or beethoven piece that's being played at some incredibly slow speed and it's supposed to take a few days (or quite a few hours or something like that) to play it in it's entirety. Someone had posted a link to it here quite awhile back.

Gives ya the heeby geebies...

Very cool Richard - &mdash 04/15/08 - 04:28:07 PM
it does sound like Beethoven - but I never downloaded BEET STRETCH - nor do I have any Beethoven in my iTunes at the moment. Is it possible that just because I listened to it last year it resurfaced on my CBGB DEMO punk track? Or - Does the electronic ether of commingling undirected midi files and endless reverb sound like Beethoven?

I think.... &mdash 04/15/08 - 01:13:52 PM
It's the musical equivalent of Pi.

Seems obvious to me.

It could be some feedback effect but the variability of the noise tends to negate that.

I'll ask my invisible friend/buddy what they think. Usually if I ask a question they reply but it's always a blank page. Maybe this time it will be different or I might just not notice.

Other than that I'm as baffled as everyone else.

Take care and thanks for allowing us to listen.

Take care.

Pi - an infinite number - &mdash 04/15/08 - 08:43:03 PM
and a great movie. That could be it.

My daughter Stella suggests that what we're hearing are "resulting tones" created by the interaction of frequencies creating something similar to harmonics and that the process is entropic and therefore never repeats. In the course of the hour that I listened to there appeared to be no repetition or dominant key. She also said it reminded her of the Sierpinsky Triangle.

The more I listen to it and then listen to the BEET STRETCH piece - the more I'm inclined to believe that it is indeed a random self perpetuating event resulting from some glitch in the GB software and the reverbs and delays I was using on the tracks that were playing before I paused.

I know what it is &mdash 04/16/08 - 04:34:33 AM
But i wont tell you!!!! Before this sound happened, did you happen to change a track plugin or setting as you played it on a keyboard? In garageband and Logic the last notes you play on an a MIDI track will be carried on infinitely if you switch the AU instrument or plugin of that track as you are playing on it. This usually stops if you press play, but it's happened indefinitely till i force quit the app.

BUT........ I would actually like to make this into a song! I love this sound. I'm picturing accompanying sounds already.

Could I do that?

[ Reply to This ]

Apple did it &mdash 04/16/08 - 06:54:29 AM
you recall how on the Mac one of the voices in System Preferences.. set to Cellos - the tune played by the cellos speeching is "Dovregubbens hall" by Edward Greig

so there is precedent for Apple to hide stuff like this in their software

(BTW i've found lots of goofy stuff in the drum kits in the Remix JamPack)

maybe one of the atmospheric synths plays Beethoven if you hold one certain note for a very long time

stuck notes in a common occurance for me on GarageBand - probably for you too?
