Description:
Here's the deal. I was working on a song and when I stopped playback this sound appeared. The song I was working on had no orchestral instruments or electronic instruments - it was only DOD drum loops and real instrument recordings of bass and guitar. I disabled the tracks one by one and still this sound persisted - so then I ran cable from my line out to my usb interface - opened a basic track and pressed record. After seven minutes or so I pressed stop. Here it is. Any idea what happened?

I have had about same experience but I don't know what it is... I'll just use it in the song I was working on... It was like a big echo from one of the track I played on my keyboard... I'll had played a few notes from the beginning BUT the sound follow through the whole song.
Way too cool it is.

I'd expect you to just work right through it. Thanks for weighing in.

I think you've hit it close to the nose here...
Sounds like other instruments feeding into a synth module and or an effects module that has the decay set to infinite or as much sustain as possible.
Whatever the case may be it sure is groovy.
Very movie soundtrackish.

feelin high ...that mac was feelin high ..I dont blame
it !!
its cool !

Hah!

Sometimes drums played into an atmospheric synth sounds a little like this. But it goes on and evolves a little too much for me to believe that's all there is to it.
Maybe an Apple programmer put an Easter Egg in GarageBand?
The notes seem to be limited to a reasonable gamut. Too much so to be entirely random...
This sounds soooo familiar. I remember making something like this sometime somewhere in some life.
Too bad about the distortion. It would be perfect otherwise...
SmokeyVW
that pic: is someone heaving into a rubbish barrel? i remember too much Sloe Gin did that to me once...
bud
for the source of the sound.
MarkHolbrook
Nano bots recorded this for you! Take credit... It's pretty cool!
bud
I'll feed the nano bots.
pablatone
you were doing? I've had mystery noises but nothing that extravagant. It is too bad about the distortion that's a real cool composition, it would be great for a documentary about space or whales.
bud
There was no controlling the sound in any way as far as I could tell - the distortion is unfortunate but I think of it as cosmic static.
Vic Holman
Has a neat 2001 space oddessey sound.
This is a wild guess, but possibly infinite delay. Sometimes i create hidden washes in some of my tunes that I have a couple presets on one of my pedal boards that create something along this line. But why your computer did it, who knows.
Play it backwards and see if there is a message from Mona Lisa or Sebastian Cabot Lodge in there. I am thinking you are the happy recipient of an oracle.
Is it possible you inadvertently had an iTunes music stream going? How about Real Audio, QuickTime, etc? Look in "recent files" in those apps.
Sounds like "Hearts of Space" from Sausilito, CA.
Sounds a lot like "La Visita" by Ludovico Einaudi

You see, Sunday's "Hearts of Space" program was called "Suspension". That perfectly describes your mystery stream.
Of course, I may be utterly and horribly wrong, in which case I will scratch a jagged penny across my teeth.
OMG, what if I am right? What prize will I receive?
bud
I actually thought it was an iTunes interference or podcast - but not so. Check the explanation I just got below.
OK. So now we know how Ludovico Einaudi and other Space Music artists do their stuff. Just wire up infinite feedback loops and step way for an hour.

I have had that happen not this beautiful mine are always dark in nature
magnatone
well, I can't explain it bud, but it's pretty cool. I'm going to go with either Mark's nano bot idea, OR Richard's oracle thought. OR - maybe both! The infamous "nano bot oracle" has made itself/himself/herself available to you - can't beat that!

Bizarre!
It sounds like you had your elbow on the keyboard when the aliens transported you through your upstairs window. It was such a pretty light.
Phone home.

That's the funniest damn thing I've heard all week, and the mysterious sound is totally cool. I've had similar short bursts of reverb sound come through when I stop and then start a Logic track. It's like the reverb coding gets stuck in memory and won't clear until the song's time line actually plays out the reverb. I don't understand.
-g
rsorensen
dont know what it is, but i like it! distortion and all!
bud
the sound is like someone on the page said- the ambient reverb from various cords stuck together and the source code can not recognize the stoping of the midi control playing the instrument. basically a glitch in garageband that i think is really cool (sometimes, unless you are working on a good track and it throws you off). sometimes it is caused by a band source connection between interfaces. sorry to send anonymous...my accounts kept getting hacked so i stopped signing up. have talked to simon about it already.
If your accounts keep getting hacked is that yet not another sign?

This is something like the beginning on a Yes album. Deep complex and totally cool. Sounds like you have a good thread going on the root cause. I too have experienced this! but my stuck notes are insanely annoying :-)
This is simply incredible.
Nick_Flash
This sounds like a great background for a song. I can hear the drums and bass now. Quite the gift.
jiguma
.. if that's who you really are! I suspect that this is the sound of aliens moving in to your computer via your brain and that by listening to it in it's entirity, all of us here have become slaves to the mother craft.
Damn cool piece of alien trickery if you ask me!

The Infinites
...experienced the joy of the Infinite Loop!
Reminds me of Philip Glass stuff.
I even liked the distort at 2.55 & 4.15 to the end. Sounds like 'they' are trying to ask for help to save the planet. The 'build' at 6.26 is scary and dramatic. Why do I really like this?
The coolest thing about this is that you actually posted it and made me think about cyber music again.
Let's have a beer and discuss further. Next Wed suit?

The crazy thing is that it is indeed infinite - I only recorded 7 minutes - but it ran for over an hour and showed no signs of going away. It killed me to actually shut it down by quitting GB. In fact I feel a certain grief mournful loss as I think about it.
Come back Shane!

PS: You might as well keep him now.
a bibanova track to me - in fact cat and i have made a whole series of EVP tracks and this was going to be the next one
i sent it to you as part of a collaboration for EVP series 6

seriously - i would be very happy to make this into EVP6 if you were willing to let me

do you want the aiff? Now I'm really sorry I unplugged her.
I have already done draft #1 of EVP6 while sitting here drining my coffee

I will try to finish it later today after work

with a Buchla synth years ago and maneged to create infinitely evolving tones - but nothing this beautiful. Is there a rig/plugin that can do this? I've been thinking about buying an electronic Tambura that's used to practice sitar and tabla.
here's a link http://www.radelindia.com/User_Products_QuickView.aspx
but I figure there must be a software version somewhere.
Thanks for taking an interest in this track.
gregd
Bud, I think you could get a good tambura sound out of a Frequency Modulator synth, if you played with it to get the over-tones of the root note in the right places. Logic has a good FM synth, but I there must be others out there that cost less than the price of Logic.
Happy hunting,

Mystified meets Pink Floyd.
Super cool track! Well done. Wish you knew how to do it. I wanna do it too.
Bubowski
quite beautiful! A found (audio) object.
michael2
it's actually quite beautiful. i'm downloading it and will undoubtedly throw it in a song. did you have a lot of delay on something? i've had weird stuff like this happen from time to time, sometimes i don't mind, others I'm tearing my hair out wondering what in the world is going on.
apb
.. I had that happen .. something midi control related .. some duff info getting interpreted as midi .. but never sounded this good .. but then again .. I might not have as good things connected up via midi ..there is panning going on too.. there is moments of distorted passion .. really pretty darn good... nice variations too! :o)
Perhaps there is some Apple code secretly neural netting all music you do .. and 'composing' on the fly...based on your compositions .. dun dun daahhh..:o)
Incredibly new-age, spacey and atmospheric. Heck I couldn't write something this good intentionally.
Kudos to random sw bugs! We can cite this the next time
GB decides to evaporate the last 3 hrs of work etc ..;o)

Sell it to a studio. Peter Weir would love this.

Hey Bud, I think that this is that Bach or beethoven piece that's being played at some incredibly slow speed and it's supposed to take a few days (or quite a few hours or something like that) to play it in it's entirety. Someone had posted a link to it here quite awhile back.
Gives ya the heeby geebies...
bud
and it's not Beet Stretch. I actually posted a link to it this morning int the forum thread about this.
Well, we can settle that theory by speeding it up. Gimme a few minutes....
I sped up Bud's recording by 10 times, using Peak Pro 6. It actually does sound like Beethoven if you listen closely...
http://www.schletty.com/music/MJ41856_Phenomenon_10x_speed.mp3
Composer Clark is right.
And Dion deserves credit, too, for good ears.
bud
it does sound like Beethoven - but I never downloaded BEET STRETCH - nor do I have any Beethoven in my iTunes at the moment. Is it possible that just because I listened to it last year it resurfaced on my CBGB DEMO punk track? Or - Does the electronic ether of commingling undirected midi files and endless reverb sound like Beethoven?
Reinholt56
It's the musical equivalent of Pi.
Seems obvious to me.
It could be some feedback effect but the variability of the noise tends to negate that.
I'll ask my invisible friend/buddy what they think. Usually if I ask a question they reply but it's always a blank page. Maybe this time it will be different or I might just not notice.
Other than that I'm as baffled as everyone else.
Take care and thanks for allowing us to listen.
Take care.
Paul
bud
and a great movie. That could be it.
My daughter Stella suggests that what we're hearing are "resulting tones" created by the interaction of frequencies creating something similar to harmonics and that the process is entropic and therefore never repeats. In the course of the hour that I listened to there appeared to be no repetition or dominant key. She also said it reminded her of the Sierpinsky Triangle.
The more I listen to it and then listen to the BEET STRETCH piece - the more I'm inclined to believe that it is indeed a random self perpetuating event resulting from some glitch in the GB software and the reverbs and delays I was using on the tracks that were playing before I paused.
DWL
your Mac is channelling Varese..........
Far out man :-)
Truly staggering.
This is the start of the next challenge. What can you do with this????????

Veeeery spooky!!! :-)
dajama
but very very cool. Someone is trying to tell you something. If only I spoke music...Peace.
MKVX
But i wont tell you!!!! Before this sound happened, did you happen to change a track plugin or setting as you played it on a keyboard? In garageband and Logic the last notes you play on an a MIDI track will be carried on infinitely if you switch the AU instrument or plugin of that track as you are playing on it. This usually stops if you press play, but it's happened indefinitely till i force quit the app.
BUT........ I would actually like to make this into a song! I love this sound. I'm picturing accompanying sounds already.
Could I do that?
bud
I was just listening to my mix and stopped playback. Feel free to use this as you like - a few others are doing the same. Let me know when you post your tune.
SmokeyVW
you recall how on the Mac one of the voices in System Preferences.. set to Cellos - the tune played by the cellos speeching is "Dovregubbens hall" by Edward Greig
so there is precedent for Apple to hide stuff like this in their software
(BTW i've found lots of goofy stuff in the drum kits in the Remix JamPack)
maybe one of the atmospheric synths plays Beethoven if you hold one certain note for a very long time
stuck notes in a common occurance for me on GarageBand - probably for you too?
SmokeyVW
i used the cellos voice on

never look a gift from zeus in the mouth .... is the soundtrack for a new "space oddessy" .... amazing where ever it came from
This happened to me back in late 2004 while working on an all loops tune. Only I got what sounded like endless guitar feedback...So I recorded it. Then I spliced the track and used pieces of it in a tune.
I gotta say, this IS trippy.
Be well!

Cool! The decay of music...

They're making contact with you Bud. Awesome - I can't understand what they're saying but it sure sounds good to me.

PS: This would probably sale in a fancy book store in the "New Age" section. (just listen to Ray Lynch this is his style - well, sort of)
ageofthedeathtree
that's just too weird bud....i have no explanation, but i say you definitely have to use it on something. it's really quite beautiful and haunting! almost sounds like something heightened (joe) would use as a backing track for one of his space pieces. actually, sounds exactly like that. tell him your mac decided you should be part of his mars series...

tried to play it backwards for the decoded message yet?
An other thought, somehow get it to where it can be played for the whales and see what they do.
Try for a repete. Set up the progam as you did that one and see if you get a modified replay.
There're watching you..........

I like the art also. Very Fitting.

THis could feat some outer space movie!! Nice soundscapes. Nicely done

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to listen, comment and speculate on this tune. I find it very amusing to have it garner this much attention and be in the fan picks - considering that I did nothing but figure out how to record this phenomenon.
I love that the piece has it's own life and continues to surprise and entertain more people.
willnlf
I can't explain it, but I agree with Vic. It's either Kubrick's essence or Werner Herzog's Aguirre the Wrath of God sailing down the Amazon. You've channeled Klaus Kinski! I'm spooked!

Sounds like quite a breeze!
I couldn't resist pushin' this song over the top!

Why is everyone fav'ing this track? Who cares, I just fav'ed it too! I think Beethoven is a reasonably talented up-and-comer regardless of the speed one plays his music, and I bet he's going to be really well-known in the next few years.
LydiasDream50
I saw this Beethoven guy in some Music store, a long time ago.
He was with a couple of weird looking dudes, and going crazy on the keyboards.
Absolutely brilliant. What happened to him?

I hope Luddy is enjoying this.

Texan, aka Stars of the Lid (Requiem for dying mothers). My all time favourite ambient artist and albums. This piece is just grand. Dissonants that make me feel eerie and still soothing, tranquil (especially when those low distorted strings kick in). A terrific Ambient piece. Well done Keith! The turtle's shell is all soft and flexible, now.
obbster
ive seen this happen loads of times, but certainly not as melodic as this

That is brilliant. A self-replicating computer making space ambient music that I would love to make. Thats amazing and very creepy.

this is a midi synth running on some stuck midi notes. I've had this happen before, or something very similar at least with my midi gear recently, and years ago.
How it kept sounding after the tracks were shut off is somewhat more of a mystery. On that, all I can think of was you had the system or a track set to listen on a submix or return line to the mains.
The variations could be part of the particular voice that was playing the stuck midi notes. Yo wouldn't normally hold the notes down this long so they may never have shown up before. Sometimes, at least on my older setups, the only way to shut it off was to actually turn off the offending synth. Now days most DAW's have a send all notes off switch or option to send out on all channels and all midi interfaces.
Just a guess on my part, but I do like the way it sounds, it is very ethereal to be sure.
Great sounds and a happy accident.
Ed

no pun intended. I have no idea how this got entered in the covers challenge - wasn't me.

this gift from you know not where? Did anyone play with it, clean it up and make a song? It is mesmerizing. Stanley Kubrick and Carl Sagan were trying to send a message that there are more things that are beyond our experience or imagination and that a tiny push can build to monumental force..or not.
I had to listen to it a couple times. Wow!
bud
nothing was done with this. It just is. Pretty crazy - huh? Thanks for stopping by.

Holy crap Bud, we were thinking the same thing - Char just sent me a link to this song.

Have you considered a reading of a poem over this, or children explaining what they think God is or the sounds of children laughing? I am addicted to this. Perhaps, a guided meditation... I so wish you'd find a use for this.
Well, It is putting me in a mellow state of mind, right now. It is a gift, as well as a phenomenon. Thanks! :)
