Description:
"The Water Mill"
Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams (b. 1872)
Poem by Fredegond Shove (b. 1899)

Feter asked me to post more from my junior recital, circa 1987
...so Feter, this one is for you :)

Lyrics:
The Water Mill
by Fredegond Shove

There is a mill, an ancient one,
Brown with rain, and dry with sun,
The miller's house is joined with it,
And in July the swallows flit
To and fro, in and out,
Round the windows, all about;
The mill wheel whirrs and the waters roar
Out of the dark arch by the door,
The willows toss their silver heads,
And the phloxes in the garden beds
Turn red, turn grey,
With the time of day,
And smell sweet in the rain, then die away.

The miller's cat is a tabby, she
Is as lean as a healthy cat can be,
She plays in the loft where the sunbeams stroke
The sacks' fat backs, and beetles choke
In the floury dust. The Wheel goes round
And the miller's wife sleeps fast and sound.

There is a clock inside the house,
Very tall and very bright,
It stikes the hour when shadows drowse,
Or showers make the windows white;
Loud and sweet, in rain and sun,
The clock strikes, and the work is done.
The miller's wife and his eldest girl
Clean and cook, while the mill wheels whirl.
The children take their meat to school,
And at dusk they play by the twilit pool;
Bare-foot, bare-head,
Till the day is dead,
And their mother calls them in to bed.

The supper stands on the clean-scrubbed board,
And the miller drinks like a thirsty lord;
The young men come for their daughter's sake,
But she never knows which one to take;
She drives her needle, and pins her stuff,
While the moon shines gold, and the lamp shines buff.

Vaughn Williams is my fave of faves. This is beautiful, so cool that you're posting these archival works. I'm sure you're sick of me telling you how gorgeous your voice is - but - well - it IS! You voice reveals more of your heart these days though - if you know what I mean. You rock mysti!

Wow... I've become quite a fan of Ralph Vaughan Williams since last Fall. So now I get to hear my favorite composer and favorite singer at the same time. Nice work. :)

Excellent! &mdash 04/17/08 - 06:45:54 PM
Hugely enjoyed this - I usually imagine RVW to be more ponderous with broad orchestral strokes but this is positively sprightly! Your voice sounds superb despite the scratchiness of this recording.

Beautiful &mdash 04/19/08 - 05:46:43 AM
Beautiful, expressive voice, and wonderful accompanist! I don't know this song, but it's interesting because I hear influences of French impressionism, and RVW was so... British!

Late to the party, but so glad I came. I love Vaughn Williams, as well as several composers of this time period. Such beautiful music that looks back to a time when things seemed to make more sense than the era in which they were living. And you did such a nice job with this. especially knowing that it's live, when you sing those high notes with what seems like effortless grace, I am impressed. Glad you shared this archival moment with us all.

Lovely truly. I can just imagin you singing while playing the piano in A film
say like Catherine Cooksons films
You are in some ones Drawing Room and you are playing the Piano and singing For the gentry and they all have the long gowns on that they wore in the victorian Era I worship that Era and they wear. Very long beautiful Bussle dresses and those hats.

The Men Smoking Cigars and the Women all sat down wafting there Fans and after it finishes they all stand up and clap.

But outside there are poor dirty begger children thin and starving for want of a nice warm bed and abite to eat.

Anyhow thats what I got from this. Wonderful Music.
Thanks you . that bit is not soo good but imagery Wow !!
My home is filled with Victorian Objects Galore.
The Picture Is Equisite Love it.

Peace Dee x

"The mill wheel whirrs..." That's a tricky line!
I know this is an old recording, it's just so piano heavy - I wish I could hear more of your voice. What I can sounds really beautiful! You can hear the youth in your voice, not inexperience, but just a younger sound thatn you have now. You voice is really quite excellent on this piece! Really!

Oh, and I love the picture!
